League of Legends 5x Versus 5y How-To

Players have come up with a way to make a new game mode with five of the same champion on each side by playing with the game files, and Riot is actually okay with it!

Riot Games is generally a company that at least tries to do right by its players.  The company president has personally apologized on their forums in the past when Riot has messed up, they give out free bonuses whenever they have interruptions of service despite being a free-to-play game, and they hold players of all levels accountable to their community guidelines.

When summoners came up with the ARAM game mode, all-random all-mid, and made it popular in custom games, Riot noticed and not only made a map specifically for such games, but added it to matchmaking.  Now the players have come up with another new game mode, but this one could have gotten a much less friendly response from Riot if they had been inclined.

Summoners have found a way to enable a game mode pitting five players playing the same champion against another team playing a different champion.  The possibilities are hilarious, to put it mildly, with five or six Draven axes in the air at once or people chaining Blitzcrank pulls to juggle champions back and forth.

The catch for this game mode is that it is not normally possible.  The only way to set up a custom game using this game mode is to go into League of Legends‘s game files and change one.  Going into RiotGamesLeagueofLegendsradsprojectslol_air_clientreleases0.0.1.51deploylib brings you to a series of .dat files.  Changing out ClientLibGame.dat with this file will change your custom game setup so every custom game you form will be 5x v 5y.

The file in question.

Obviously going into and modifying the game’s files is a technical breach of the game’s terms of use, meaning Riot would have every right to ban players for doing this.  Much to everyone’s surprise, however, Riot has openly stated they will do no such thing.  For this specific issue, they are okay with players messing with the game’s files. They have clarified this is a very specific issue in that it is done purely for fun and it harms no one, and future breaches of TOU may well be responded to differently; but they will not punish players for modifying the game files to enjoy this new game mode.

So get out there and let the craziness commence!
