Firefly Online: To Love or Not to Love

The opportunity to be a captain in the verse could be a worthwhile game to play if QMx can bring the goods to the table.

Despite the television series being cancelled over ten years ago, Firefly is still a well-beloved series that many thought was cancelled too early. The series has spawned one official movie, Serenity, as well as comic books and a roleplaying game. That love is not over as QMx Online is setting up to bring the ‘verse to the video game world with Firefly Online.

Announced at last year’s San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), many fans (also known as Browncoats) have been avidly awaiting a release of this new MMO. The original trailer stated that it was coming summer 2014. Well, it’s most definitely summer (judging by the heat outside) and it’s 2014, but still no release date has come.

What is Firefly Online?

Firefly Online is not your traditional MMO, at least not from how developers describe the gameplay. Players will be the captains of their own ships. Their crew will be NPCs that will adjust in loyalty based on player’s actions as captain. It will be the captain’s job to procure jobs to be able to support the crew.

Come On, How Good Can It Be?

When I first heard about Firefly Online, I wasn’t sure what to think. How good can it be when it’s supposed to be releasing on mobile devices as well? Is this going to just be another social flash-style game? Being the Browncoat I am, I was very anxious about the whole situation. Just how shiny could it be?

Enter SDCC 2014. Now I am quite ecstatic about the release, though I would love to know when it is going to be released (come on QMx, we are dying to know). I want to explore the ‘verse to my heart’s content with my crew. With the Firefly crew included in the game voiced by the original cast, I am a bit too excited to run into Mal and all the rest of the gang.

Oops, Signal Denied

I’m apparently not the only Browncoat excited to find out more about Firefly Online. During SDCC, the tech team had to fly home to set about fixing their website. Mr. Universe was wrong. We can stop the signal. Get enough Browncoats trying to hit the same website at one time and an account suspension from the ISP after a server crashed is what you get.

Fans trying to go to the site KeepFlying.com will no longer find the informational website for the time-being, but the Cortex login has been reactivated for players’ use. Be sure to visit the Cortex and register to make sure you get the captain’s name you want reserved (I’ve definitely got mine).

More! We Demand More!

With all the technical difficulties with their website, the gameplay demo and panel we were told we were to see is likely been delayed until they have gotten their website back online on a new server all shiny and new. This has me a bit upset, but I shall wait and see when they allow this information to be seen by those unlucky enough to attend this year’s SDCC. Word has it that planned DLC will also let players choose to play as Alliance and Reavers.

Will you be joining me in the ‘verse?
