GameSkinny Internship: Bastion Phase Goodbyes

A look back on the Bastion phase of the GameSkinny internship. I... I'm so sad right now. ;-;

“Your job is to write about breasts?”

“Breast implants! And no! I said video games! VIDEO GAMES!”

“You looked up follow-up procedures for boob jobs. That’s a story about boobs.”

“You’d think that, wouldn’t you?”

Yes, sometimes interning at GameSkinny means sparking some pretty interesting conversations. Especially when you check up on one of your articles while at work to see how your views are doing and your coworker happens to look over your shoulder.

It also means rushing home after work some days to frantically rack your brains for news, any news, and hope to heaven that no one’s already written about it. This process can occasionally supersede such usual routines as sleeping, eating, and taking off your left sock.

So what has it been like?

In all honesty? I can only speak for myself. But as a member of Team Omegacron just closing up the Bastion phase, I’ll tell you what it’s been.

Awesome.

I mean, it hasn’t all been sunshine and daisies. As I said in my writeup for the internship’s Beta Phase, being an intern at GameSkinny is like being an intern anywhere. It’s a long, hard, often frustrating slog doing stuff for free what other people get paid to do.

Confusing deadlines, interfering real life, and the occasional staggering workloads are also just par the course.

But a great, hardworking, reliable team that takes it as read to support and encourage each other in everything makes up for all of that, and that’s what I’ve gotten out of being in Team Omegacron. In spite of all of us having daytime jobs and limited time to give to writing, we’ve stuck it through and when one of us can’t manage, there’s someone else ready and willing to take the slack.

I really am sad to see it end.

After this phase, Omegacron is no more. 🙁

Not that we’re leaving. Not by any means. You’ll see us all again… Amanda, Jamie, Miranda, Kevin, and me. And if you’re signing up for the Orzhov phase, one of us might even be your team leader.

What have I learned?

Everything in life is a learning experience, and interning at GameSkinny is no different. By writing for this internship, I have fine-tuned my researching and time-management abilities, found a more even footing with regards to the mystical workings of Twitter, and made my first YouTube video in the history of ever.

I’ve learned that in spite of some hearty competition between teams, those of us in the intern pool aren’t going to get bitter, flip tables, and break friendships over weekly wins. In the Beta phase, our individual teams were so estranged from each other and so insular in our own little Skype groups, that’s how it felt like it was going to be. It was “us against them.” And it’s not.

This phase, GameSkinny introduced the video intern subgroup which taught me how weird, wacky, and really cool the interns in the other teams were. I’ve helped organize, take part in, and host a weekly podcast, the GameSkinny Round Table. I’ve played around with video editing tools and recording software that I haven’t touched in years.

I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve actually had a lot of fun doing it.

Thinking of signing up?

Do it. Seriously. It’s time-consuming, stressful, and very, very hard on your lazy bone. But I’m always of the opinion that you should never let the idea of a challenge nor hard work discourage you. After all, you never really know what you’re capable of until you try.

See you in the Orzhov phase!
