Introducing The “Women Who Play” Interviews

An introduction to the "Women Who Play" interview series.

Hello. I’m Kazz, a long term gaming addict and MMORPG fan since.

A few years ago I started writing about gaming. The more I wrote the more I started to read. The more I read the more I found myself on the topic of “women in gaming.” I found myself regularly watching videos or reading articles on stereotypes, inequality, abuse and ridiculously outdated attitudes.

This made me sad, and a little bit angry, because the constant stream of negativity painted a picture of gaming that was uninviting, insular and, quite frankly, full of arseholes.

But this was completely at odds with my own experiences. Gaming, for me, has been a hugely entertaining and largely positive past-time. I have often been outnumbered in terms of gender but it has never been an issue. Online, I have enjoyed the company of some of the funniest, interesting, creative and dedicated people I’ve ever come across, in real life or virtual. I’ve laughed, cried, played, argued and bantered many nights away with some awesome gamer guys and girls of all walks of life and from all over the world. There are some fantastic gaming communities, guilds and clans out there and I think sometimes it is easy to forget that.

I absolutely believe in highlighting inequality and exposing behaviour that has no place in gaming.

Female gamers are out there and they are having a good time. They are running guilds, leading raids, making podcasts, writing blogs and some are even helping to make new games.

But equally, I believe it is important to spend some time looking at the good things going on. Female gamers are out there and they are having a good time. They are running guilds, leading raids, making podcasts, writing blogs and some are even helping to make new games.

I decided to seek out some ladies, from a variety of different gaming backgrounds, and shine a spot-light on these women, what they do online, what they love, hate and why they play. We’re a long way from equality online but I hope I can create a little corner of the internet with stories and experiences that not only help to fight the myth that gaming is “a guy thing” but also demonstrate that it’s not all doom and gloom for female gamers.

The Interviews

Are you, or do you know, a long-term women gamer, blogger or game developer who would make an interesting participant for a future interview? If so please leave me a message in the comments section.
