Life as a GameSkinny Intern is Pretty Darn Rad

I’m proud of my team and I’m proud of our work. I love these guys and gals!
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Note: Just imagine the guy in the video is saying “RAAAAAAAAAAD”
I’ve been accused of overusing the word “rad” too much lately, but the past month as a GameSkinny intern has been pretty damn rad. Hmm, no, no, no. Groovy? Yeah, it’s been groovy. Swell, even. Maybe even a bit, dare I say…tubular?

1990s aside, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the past month and my experiences as an editor for Team Alpha in the GameSkinny internship. Hopefully, my insight will encourage you to apply to be intern yourself! More info here for those interested. You might notice a few other interns posting their thoughts and I highly recommend checking out MirroredSakura’s, Jamie’s, SmokyGrey’s, and Raven’s posts if you get the chance!

Meet the Teams

The past month has been a slew of early mornings, late nights, and I’ve pretty much plugged my brain directly into Skype at this point. Skype with whom? Why, my amazing and respected colleagues in Team Alpha! At the beginning of the internship all 20 or so interns were divvied up into 4 teams initially, all with different names: Alpha, Delta, Omega, and Omnicron. (Omega and Omnicron later fused to become the mega Team Omegacron. I only assume there was a DBZ fusion dance involved.)

Team Alpha is made up of myself, one other editor, two writers and one fearless leader. While other teams had a social media person, we had an extra editor instead. We might not have gotten the same level of views, but hot-damn, our articles were excellent. I’m not sure what the atmospheres of the other teams were like, but our little corner of Skype has been a place of love, insult humor, general shenanigans, as well as a surprising level of professionalism.

Just a Bit of Love For Team Alpha

Despite the poop jokes, terrible puns, and occasionally excessive USE OF CAPS LOCK, we actually work very effectively and efficiently and turn out some great work. I’ve been on plenty of writing teams, and every team of games journalists has been full of the most amazingly fun people to work with.

As an editor, it has been my absolute pleasure to watch my writers grow and develop their writing and their own styles. They’ve gotten better and better with each article they’ve given me to edit. I was picked to be an editor because of my previous writing experience and it has been incredibly rewarding to see everyone take critical advice with grace and see them all work hard to improve themselves. I’m proud of my team and I’m proud of the work we’ve put out. After a month together, I love the strange little family we’ve established and am happy that I can call Team Alpha my friends. Work is never a chore when your coworkers are great.

And Finally…

Katy, the Queen of the Interns, has been absolutely phenomenal. Our tireless leader was always helpful, insightful, and willing to dish out constructive feedback. I do not envy the amount of work she must have put in this month (wrangling interns is like herding cats). I can’t thank her enough for being so great during the past four weeks. I hope some GameSkinny higher-ups are reading this: Katy has been real a pleasure to work with!

Thanks to this internship: I know I’ve improved my writing, developed my own voice and style, and I’ve greatly improved as an editor during this past month. I look forward to the next phase of the internship and I am excited to see what GameSkinny has in store for us as it continues to grow. I love what GameSkinny is all about and I am super excited to be a part of this world.
