Midair Preview: High-Flying Fun

Jetpacks and guns go great together.

With very few exceptions, if you’ve played one shooter, you have a pretty good idea of how to play all shooters. While most shooters have a different way of doing things, be it a new mechanic or location, for the most part, the controls are embedded in your brain with little need to change your overall strategy from game to game. Midair, a new multiplayer shooter from Archetype Studios, is a very different game.

In Midair, everything you know about shooters has changed. There’s next to no cover to hide behind, moving around at reckless speeds is the best way forward, and even aiming at your target won’t always guarantee a direct hit. There’s a lot to unlearn and relearn, but you’ll be glad you did.

As of right now, the game is in pre-alpha, but it’s still a blast to play. Gliding down slopes and hitting jumps with your jetpack feels smooth and brings in a sort of Tony Hawk feeling that so few shooters have. While learning to shoot targets that move so quickly is difficult, it feels awesome when you finally get the hang of it. This is one game that I can see growing a dedicated following, especially among Twitch streamers, just because of how awesome it feels to pull off cool stunts and kills. You can see more about the game on their website, or on the game’s kickstarter.
