With Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 4 release around the corner, it’s no surprise they made it a point to make their mark on PAX Prime this weekend. What made PlayStation so enticing from the start?

All this hype surrounding the PS4 is nothing new for Sony. Sony Computer Entertainment’s début at E3 in 1995, changed the gaming community forever when they presented their new interactive gaming console, the PlayStation. The first of its kind, Playstation brought to the plate something other consoles never even thought of. With features like Real-Time 3D graphic technology, CD Rom games, and Dual Shock controllers with a rumble function brought a whole new meaning to interactive gaming.

It is no wonder Sony’s marketing campaigns reached out to so many gamers; there was no other gaming console like it on the market. Selling a million units within the first 6 months, it was clear the PlayStation was here to stay.

Living up to a reputation

Realizing what they had, Sony never ceased to push the envelope on innovative gaming technology. In 2000, the PS2 was released and has been the best-selling console of all time; PS2 production was only discontinued last year. And the PlayStation 3 doesn’t fall far behind the popularity of its predecessors. It made PlayStation a strong contender in the new era of HD Gaming.

Some of the major additions to the PS3 were the powerful graphics chip in the hardware, HDMI capabilities, the addition of a Blu-ray player and the PlayStation Network. With PSN, PlayStation fans have access to online networks, free online multiplayer, numerous apps like Netflix, Youtube, and PS Plus which gives free downloadable games every month and tons of discounts, all while downloading gaming content straight to your console. What’s more is that Sony’s support towards indie developers has brought tons of indie games into the PSN store; games such as Journey, Hotline Miami, and The Unfinished Swan. But Sony hasn’t stopped satisfying their fans there.

 PS4: the future of PlayStation

November 15 is the long-awaited U.S. launch date for the PS4 and we can’t wait any longer for it. The impressive PS4 will be well equipped with more powerful hardware that will have a built-in power supply, 8GB of unified memory, and will use AMD technology for both CPU and GPU elements.

Cloud gaming via GaiKai and the enhanced controllers are also causing quite the stir. The new Dual Shock 4 controllers are made with the gamers’ needs in mind. A light pad will help find the user and make adjustment to any split screen mode based on the player’s location in the room, the multi-touch pad will make it easier for gamers to have touch interactions throughout games, and the new Share button will record any gameplay to let users share their videos instantly from the controller.

And let us not forget the great integration of the PS Vita doubling as another controller for the PS4. The PS4 will be able to stream video to the Vita allowing for gamers to play whenever the TV is being used.

All of these enhancements and efforts towards revolutionizing the gaming world is what really has us all hooked to the PlayStation. Sony’s cutting edge technology truly satisfies what every gamer hopes to find in a gaming console. This is, without a doubt, one of the main reasons why the need to have a PlayStation in our lives exists.
