Why I Won’t be Buying an Xbox One

If I'm getting a next-gen console, it's not going to be an Xbox One.

With the Xbox One’s release this week following the release of the PlayStation 4 last week, there’s been a lot of talk about next-gen consoles. As a poor college student with no steady income, I can’t really afford to splurge. That being said, I probably still would not buy an Xbox One. If anything, I’d be getting myself a shiny new PlayStation 4.

My first game console was the original PlayStation. Since then, I have gotten every single one of the PlayStation’s reincarnations. I have also had every Nintendo console since the Nintendo 64. Between the two companies, I was able to play every game that I have ever wanted to play. I admit, most of my bias toward the PlayStation 4 stems from my extensive experience with Sony products. I’ve never been disappointed by any Sony product that I’ve owned, so they’ve instilled in me a sense of loyalty.

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used any version of the Xbox.

To be honest, I didn’t get the hype. Sure, Microsoft makes decent consoles, but the only thing I enjoyed about the Xbox 360 over a Nintendo or Sony console was the Star Wars game for the Kinect.

There’s no major selling point for me at the moment. Mircrosoft’s exclusive games aren’t really anything I’m interested in playing. Plus the voice commands on the Xbox One kind of freak me out, and its ability to recognize you is also not exactly comforting. Blame it on paranoia, or being the daughter of a lawyer, but I don’t like that they’re storing information about me.

Maybe I’ll eventually end up breaking down and getting an Xbox One. I don’t know. Something big has to happen to sell me on it, like a game I really want to play that ends up being an exclusive for the console. However, until that happens, I’ll be saving up for a PlayStation 4 with its lower starting price and fancy new controller.
