We can officially bid a sad farewell to Ambient Studios, the development team behind the much-anticipated Kickstarter darling Death Inc. The underworld strategy game failed to reach its funding level on Kickstarter, but maintained enthusiastic backer support, and was scheduled to release an alpha to early backers in the months to come. Unfortunately, in an announcement made today on their website, Ambient Studios explained that issues still arose from a simple lack of funding.

We’re super proud of what we achieved, but ultimately we didn’t manage to make enough money to keep the wolves from the door. And so we had to make the difficult decision that it is no longer feasible for Ambient to continue operating.

Just last week, the project seemed to be chugging along nicely, with regular updates coming via Ambient Studios' blog. The news is sudden, but not entirely surprising given Death Inc.'s inability to gain funding even during the early stages of development. If you're a concerned alpha backer, Ambient promises to refund any money you've contributed to development.

Thank you so much for all your support and encouragement along the way, we’ve got no regrets and have loved every minute of it. Obviously we cannot deliver on the commitments we made in the various Death Inc. alpha tiers. If you’re one of the alpha backers, don’t worry – we will be issuing full refunds so you will not be in any way out of pocket.

It's a sad, sad day in the indie gaming world. Ambient Studios had heaps of promise, and it's unclear what individual team members will be doing after Ambient closes its doors. If you're a fan of indie game-making, you can follow a couple of twitters (@jonnyhopper, @rovient)   to pay attention to what everyone's going to be doing in the future.

Ambient Studios Interview Pt. II: Frank, Lord of Pugs Fri, 08 Mar 2013 16:30:44 -0500 Katy Hollingsworth

The developers over at Ambient Studios have been hard at work with their Death Inc. project, despite their Kickstarter coming up short on funds.

However, the studio vows to find a way to make Death Inc. a reality for those who are interested in spreading the most colorful plague ever.

In this portion of the interview, Jonny Hopper and Daniel Leaver talk with us about Jonny's pug, Frank, and his contribution to the studio.

Thanks for telling us about Frank, Lord of Pugs! Anything else you'd like to share?

Ambient Studios: "Pugs not drugs."

Part I Of Ambient Studios' Exclusive Interview: The Concept Mon, 04 Mar 2013 16:37:04 -0500 Katy Hollingsworth

Ambient Studios is getting ready to release their newest title, Death Inc., upon the completion of their Kickstarter--which is right around the cornering, with 49 hours left to raise their funds.

They still have about 200,000 pounds left, and need your support! We loved their laid-back attitude and quirky perception of the Grim Reaper, and we're sure you will too. Check out the footage in the video above for more information.

Jonny Hopper and Daniel Leaver, two of the four co-founders at Ambient Studios, mentioned an August 2013 release date, assuming that they can reach their Kickstarter goal.

I’d like to say it’s 100% critical and that not reaching it would be the end of the world. Obviously we’ve put loads of work in and it’s been very hard, but if we don’t make it we shall explore other options. Death Inc. will almost certainly still get made, just differently perhaps.

We asked them how the idea for Death Inc. come about, and what can we look forward to...

It started off as a question: “What would it be like to control a horde of zombies against the good guys?” And then we decided that it would be cool but also dull because everybody’s made a zombie game in the last few years. So we started to explore more exciting and fresh scenarios. Skip a step and you have “controlling the Grim Reaper in the 17th century giving everyone the bubonic plague." ...In truth I’m really excited about the tactical options you can explore with the different units. The way you control the guys makes it seem very fluid and natural. It’s exciting to play.

Stay tuned for the next part in our Ambient Studios series, coming soon as we count down to their Kickstarter completion!

Life is short, check out the Death Inc. Demo Fri, 22 Feb 2013 17:47:29 -0500 Amy White

The team at Ambient Studios has more than a century of combined game development experience, and it shows in Death Inc.  In this video, Jonny and Daniel join us to explain the concept behind the game and share why Kickstarter is such a key part of their development plan.

Oh yeah, about that Kickstarter

Speaking of, at press time their campaign has a mere 12 days remaining. That means there's less than two weeks to check out the entertaining perks for donors (owning your own pub, anyone?) and playable demo on the Death Inc. Kickstarter page.

Coming soon

Look for reviews and more interviews on developing Death Inc. and the internal workings of Ambient Studios next week, but mosey on over to their Kickstarter now if you want to check it out while the clock is ticking.
