Steam has a lot of F2P titles on its service. The problem is that so many of them are bad. Whether they're just badly designed, have countless bugs, or are nothing more than a P2W format...there are plenty of horrible games to be found.

\n

While there may be an overwhelming number of titles that aren't worth your time, there are still a handful of F2P games on Steam that are definitely worth playing. These 7 games are shining examples of how much fun a free-to-play game can be when it's done right.

Terraria 1.3.4 Guide: How to Get the Tavernkeep and Use/Make World Seeds https://www.gameskinny.com/pvrkc/terraria-134-guide-how-to-get-the-tavernkeep-and-usemake-world-seeds https://www.gameskinny.com/pvrkc/terraria-134-guide-how-to-get-the-tavernkeep-and-usemake-world-seeds Tue, 15 Nov 2016 11:38:37 -0500 Ashley Shankle

How does Terraria just keep getting better? I don't get it.

After Redigit's hiatus and the massive 1.2 update in 2013, the game has just gotten waves of new content. Here we are three years later and the game is up to version 1.3.4.

As with most of Terraria's updates, this one is packed with new content. You can check out the full patch notes on the forums. As usual, they're fairly hefty but aren't massive this time around.

Some notable additions to the game in 1.3.4 are a new ability for players going the summoner route, letting them specify minion attacks. That's alongside new enemies, two new mini-bosses and boss, and the addition of the Dungeon Defenders 2 cross-over invasion.

That last one is the meat of the update as it brings in a brand new invasion, new mechanics, and new gear to earn via a special vendor tied to the event: the Tavernkeep.

How to Find the Tavernkeep

Some players are having trouble finding the Tavernkeep NPC, and that's understandable. After all, he can be anywhere! Luckily, there aren't many restrictions on finding him, but here are some notes to keep in mind:

  • The Tavernkeep NPC will spawn in a random location either above or below ground somewhere in your world as an "Unconscious Man."

  • The Unconscious Man will spawn in both new and old worlds.

  • The Unconscious Man will spawn both during Hardmode and pre-Hardmode.

  • The Lifeform Analyzer can show where he is like with other NPCs

  • At the time of writing (November 15, patch day) the Unconscious Man has been spawning in oceans for many players, which is a bug. If you haven't found him, check your oceans.

Once you set him free and have a free room for him, he will move in just like any other NPC.

The Tavernkeep sells some items for standard currency but most of his wares have to be bought with Defender Medals, which only drop during the cross-over invasions. He gives you a few Defender Medals to start, but you're going to need a lot more to buy the high-end gear he's got for sale.

The new Dungeon Defenders 2 cross-over content is by far the biggest chunk of new stuff in 1.3.4 and based on the gear the Tavernkeep has for sale, it's well worth the effort.

Enabling World Seeds in 1.3.4

One new feature in the update that some may ignore is the new experimental seed feature. This spawns worlds off of seeds, much like some other sandbox games. This new addition should be great news for all PC, Mac, and Linux-based Terraria players and hopefully, it will grace other platforms in the near future.

Windows

Here's how Windows users enable using seeds in Terraria 1.3.4:

  • Make sure the game is not running
  • Go to your Documents folder, then My Games, then the Terraria folder
  • Right-click the "config.json" file and choose to open it in Notepad
  • Look for "UseExperimentalFeatures": false, not far down the list
  • Change the "false" to "true" (no quotation marks, leave the comma after "true" as it was originally)
  • Save the file
  • Launch the game
Mac
  • Make sure the game is not running
  • Open your Finder by clicking "Go" at the top of your screen
  • Hold "Option," click "Library," then open "Application Support"
  • Open "Terraria" folder and double click "config.json"
  • Look for "UseExperimentalFeatures": false, not far down the list
  • Change the "false" to "true" (no quotation marks, leave the comma after "true" as it was originally)
  • Save the file
  • Launch the game
Linux
  • Make sure the game is not running
  • Go to your Documents folder, then My Games, then the Terraria folder
  • Right-click the "config.json" file and choose to open it in Notepad
  • Look for "UseExperimentalFeatures": false, not far down the list
  • Change the "false" to "true" (no quotation marks, leave the comma after "true" as it was originally)
  • Save the file
  • Launch the game

Now, when you go to make a new world after you've chosen your world name the game will ask for a seed, you can choose to use one or leave it random.

It's a relatively simple process that finally brings a relatively common feature in the genre to its most popular 2D entry.

While the world seed feature is currently experimental, which may cause crashing or other issues, it should be stabilized in upcoming updates to be a standard feature.

Dungeon Defenders II open alpha released amid server problems https://www.gameskinny.com/byivv/dungeon-defenders-ii-open-alpha-released-amid-server-problems https://www.gameskinny.com/byivv/dungeon-defenders-ii-open-alpha-released-amid-server-problems Wed, 21 Oct 2015 04:19:33 -0400 Ciaran Brennan

Trendy Entertainment's long-awaited sequel to its 2011 tower defense RPG, Dungeon Defenders, has finally broken through the early alpha stage on Steam's Early Access platform last week, and can now be played for free by all.

The Dungeon Defenders series is a co-operative 4 player tower defense action RPG hybrid. Despite that mouthful, the games have had enjoyed quite a lot of success on multiple platforms over the past few years.

Unlike its predecessor, the sequel has spent the past year as a paid Early Access alpha, while intending to make a full release as a free-to-play title. Dungeon Defenders II also released onto Sony's early alpha platform on the PS4 last month.

The Steam launch has not come without some issues, though, as the servers reached peak numbers over the weekend.

"We've been hitting record concurrency numbers, and there are starting to be some issues with the way our backend service handles all of the matchmaking requests coming in so quickly."

"What we’re releasing should solve the immediate problem, but there’s more work to be done, so expect further improvements in the future. "

- Trendy Entertainment via Steam

However, connection problems due to the overpopulated servers appear to have been swiftly solved by the dev team so far.

The open alpha is also being released with the rollout of a new two-part patch titled Ascension.

If swinging swords at things and receiving tons of loot is your cup of tea, then maybe a free hot cup of Dungeon Defenders II will be all you need to wake up in the morning.

What Does RNG Mean? https://www.gameskinny.com/2i2km/what-does-rng-mean https://www.gameskinny.com/2i2km/what-does-rng-mean Mon, 05 Jan 2015 08:18:10 -0500 Aeliantis

In many games being streamed on Twitch or viewed on YouTube you will hear the term RNG used frequently. RNG means Random Number Generator.

An example of this in video games would be the random card draws in Hearthstone: the game uses a Random Number Generator to dictate the next card you draw or outcome of a coin toss...this is why so many people are heard cursing about RNG on streams. It's like cursing a coin for coming up tails when you wanted heads.

Separately from card games like Hearthstone there are things like dungeon crawlers. RNG can have a large role in these as well, dictating when you get certain loot drops and when you don't. If you've been farming a World of Warcraft boss for hours and still haven't gotten his/her rare drop, don't give up! Every time you kill the creature you 'roll' and if the rolled number X is greater than or equal to the required number for loot drop, you'll get your item.

There are many more examples to be found throughout the world of gaming, these are just a couple to provide a basic explanation.

A little bit extra: a physical RNG device can be found in many homes as a pair of dice! Roll them to receive a random number. Bam! RNG.

Thanks for stopping by,
Aeliantis

PAX East 2014: Dungeon Defenders 2 Impressions https://www.gameskinny.com/5hy6z/pax-east-2014-dungeon-defenders-2-impressions https://www.gameskinny.com/5hy6z/pax-east-2014-dungeon-defenders-2-impressions Mon, 14 Apr 2014 02:33:30 -0400 Amanda Wallace

Dungeon Defenders II is a cooperative tower defense game with heavy roleplay elements. Their sell is that it combines some of the elements of a MOBA (namely fighting in lanes) with the classic elements of the tower defense genre (namely laying traps.) The game is also heavily cooperative, so participants in the PAX East demo had to utilize head sets to talk to their teammates.

Teams were set up with four main classes -- a knight, monk, huntress, and apprentice. These classes had unique build items, and a certain amount of pain that they could take before dying and therefore respawning. Goblin-like creatures charged their wave of destruction down the lanes.

As a disclaimer, I was paired with a team consisting of two children and their adult guardian. The two boys (both under the age of 10) were incredibly loud, and most of the game consisted of them screeching through the scratchy mics about how we were all going to die. It is possible that the game would've been more fun if I had been on a team of people that I knew and liked, but it's a hard thing to say.

But is it anything new?

Overall, I found Dungeon Defenders II to be dry and incredibly one note. The art style was reminiscent of Orcs Must Die, and in some ways the "innovative" concept was as well. It didn't really feel like Dungeon Defenders II  brought anything new to the table. Even the classes felt like rehashing old standards. While there is room in the world for more of the same, it doesn't excite the same way other great finds at PAX did and that was a disappointment.

In our demo, it seemed like a decent player could control the game through a series of choke points on the map. However, as this is a team game, a weak link will cause the entire system to crumble. This isn't a slight against the game, but rather a point about team construction. It seems like the kind of game where you need everyone to be on pointe in order to not get overrun by the hordes.

There were only a few enemy types in our demo, but they were all variations on the goblin theme, and it just felt like the standard fantasy roster.

Dungeon Defenders II is scheduled for a soft launch Spring 2014, and will release on PC/Mac/Linux.

Dungeon Defenders 2 Announced, Going Free to Play https://www.gameskinny.com/q6f36/dungeon-defenders-2-announced-going-free-to-play https://www.gameskinny.com/q6f36/dungeon-defenders-2-announced-going-free-to-play Wed, 20 Mar 2013 11:35:25 -0400 Ashley Shankle

The original Dungeon Defenders game mixed action combat with classic tower defense gameplay staples -- a hybrid of genres that has found itself popular over the past couple of years. Dungeon Defenders 2 will have more of the same, but will be packed with a competitive MOBA-style mode as well.

Developer Trendy Entertainment will be doling out more information on the upcoming title this Friday, and will be giving PAX East attendees a chance to play the new mode. Those of us not lucky enough to go to PAX will have to join the beta key waiting list found on the official site.

Trendy promises that the MOBA aspect of the title will have persistent hero customization and leveling, as well as a simpler item system for new players to get used to the game. Dungeon Defenders 2 will also have cross-platform support, though whether that covers the full spectrum of release platforms (PC, Mac, iOS, web-based, and Android) is yet to be known.

Head over the official site for more information. They have a nifty FAQ with some quick and easy information, and will be updating the site with brand new information on Dungeon Defenders 2 on Friday.
