Tanks and Turrets: A League of Legends Idea

Changing the game in League of Legends!

Riot Games, the developers of LoL, are currently going through a mid life crisis whereby they are throwing out new game modes for the community to mess about with, moving away from the super serious 5v5 insult fest.

Adding ARAM and Hexakill support

The first of these was creating a map for the ARAM game mode, which was originally created by the community. Then they tried the all for one game mode, which featured 5v5 teams of the same character facing off. Their most recent release was the hexakill mode, a 6v6 mode. I really like that Riot is doing this, as it allows a bit of silliness and – dare I say it -fun into League of Legends. Don’t get me wrong, I am completely addicted to LoL, but the variety in game modes is refreshing.

Now, to the matter at hand! I have been thinking of a way to ‘spice up’ the vanilla 5v5 that would completely change the way the game is played. I’m not talking about huge changes such as adding another player or another lane, though that would be cool. My idea changes the way champions behave towards each other and the game environment.

The State of the Game

Currently, when building a team of champions, there is a strong focus on AD (Attack Damage). Some AD champions can not only have the potential burst of AP (Ability Power) champions, but can also benefit heavily from auto attacks, which is a mere right click. AD is particularly strong against turrets, and turrets are the benchmark of any defense in LoL. Champions that have strong auto attacks, or even AD assassins, can burn through a turret’s hit points in seconds. This seems silly to me. A champion with bullets or knives should not be able to easily blaze through a defensive turret, it just seems too overpowered.

What Riot Should Do

What I would like to see is the turrets having to be taken down by big, tanky, bruiser champions such as Malphite or Moakai. Tanks doing bonus damage to turrets means they have a much higher purpose in the game. Instead of just being a damage sponge in every teamfight, they can actually contribute to the progression of the game in a big way. It would mean strategic timing would be needed for a tanky champion to help push a tower when it is vulnerable, instead of the tower getting utterly rinsed by Teemo’s pea shooter.

I believe this sort of game mode would change the game dynamic significantly, but still remain competitive and not too silly. It would change how a team is put together, how a jungler ganks, and it may even change the pace of the game.

This is my first post on Gameskinny and I know a few of you like LoL so thank you for taking the time to read this!
