Guild Wars 2: Flame and Frost Prelude

Arenanet has officially announced the updates coming on January 28th in what they are calling the prologue to an in-game narrative.

We’ve been hearing for a while now about the upcoming updates and additions that are going to be brought to Guild Wars 2 in the near future.  Now we’re finally getting an official announcement regarding the first of those changes being implemented at the end of the month.

What’s new

On January 28, 2013 Arenanet will be patching to include quite a few features, most of which we’ve heard about already, but not all of them as being quite so imminent.  The first thing to recall is the prior announcement that the updates they’ve had planned for fractal dungeons and the ability to guest onto your friends’ servers will both be going live with the rest of these features, so keep that in mind.

The first new item listed on the announcement for the upcoming patch is Temple of the Silent Storm Week.  The standard eight-team PvP tournaments (the paid version, at least) will be replaced with a new two-team paid tournament system on the Temple of the Silent Storm map.  This change will go from the 28th to the 4th of February.  After that week, the paid tournaments will go back to normal, with the addition that the map will be added to their rotation.

The updates to Guild Wars 2’s achievement system that the developers have been talking about are also going to be going live with the upcoming patch.  Some of them, at least.  There aren’t any specifics yet regarding exactly what the new achievements will be, but they’re going to be rewarding players with a new currency called laurels that can be redeemed for things like ascended gear and infusions, exactly as was hinted earlier in the year.

They also mention less-specific updates to world vs world, new items for the gem shop, and offer up a wallpaper for everyone to download.

Wait a minute… prologue?

They call this patch update “the prologue to a multi-stage narrative that will bring big changes to Guild Wars 2 in the months to come.”

The world of Tyria is in for some dramatic changes and events, one can only wonder what, exactly, this means for those living in it.  Guild Wars 2 sounds like it’s in for interesting times, terrifying for its denizens, exciting for those of us just participating via our toons.
