It’s been a long road for No Man’s Sky, but if Hello Games’ founder, Sean Murray, is to be believed, this summer will finally bring the game’s original potential to full realization. Announced during a live Inside Xbox event, the release date for the Xbox One version of the game will be July 24 for North America, with the European release set for July 27. The Xbox One version will include all the updates and patches that have been released up to this point, which have arguably made No Man’s Sky a more full-fledged game than what was originally delivered.
Coinciding with the Xbox One release will be the game’s biggest update yet — “NEXT” — and this time, we’re promised a full, cross-platform multiplayer experience. Free for current PC and PS4 owners, according to a press release, “NEXT” brings the following features to the game:
- Explore the infinite universe with your friends, or bump into random travellers
- As you voyage together, friends will help you stay alive, or prey on others to survive
- Build bases from tiny shelters to complex colonies that you create as a team and can be seen by the community
- Be a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and foes
Race exocraft across weird alien terrains and create tracks to share online
Given the history of No Man’s Sky and some of the promises we’ve heard from Sean Murray in the past, one could be forgiven if this is met with a bit of skepticism. Still, Hello Games has demonstrated a real dedication to continual improvements through updates and patches, and few would argue that No Man’s Sky isn’t a better game today than what we were originally delivered many moons ago.
