Sony Computer Entertainment of America president and CEO Jack Tretton announced that he wants the new Playstation 4 console to sell three million units by the end of 2013. Tretton additionally projects that PS4 console sales will reach five million by March 2014.

The PS4 is launching in 32 countries by the end of the year, and locations such as Japan and the always enthusiatic Korea, should boost Playstation sales enough to meet or surpass these lofty sales predictions.

The PS4 has a lower price than Microsoft’s competing Xbox One, which should also allow the Sony console to out performs the Microsoft product. Robert W. Baird & Co. analyst Colin Sebastian backed up Tretton’s estimates. He reported that Sony will likely sell about three million PS4s this year.

Three million sounds like a lot of sales, but the WiiU actually sold more units than that between their launch last November and the end of the year. The WiiU, however, sold very few consoles after its initial launch and didn’t reach five million in its first year.

If Sony sees continued growth, it will be the most successful console ever. The PS4 has a lot of demand and positive press right now that might be able to carry it through past the new year. It will simply depend whether their marketing pays off.
