The latest Star Wars: Battlefront ad puts your childhood in the crosshairs

The latest Star Wars: Battlefront ad brings out the inner Star Wars geek in us all...

The PlayStation Youtube channel just released a new holiday 2015 commercial for Star Wars: Battlefront, and this time it's not gameplay that they were aiming to show off.

The scene opens with a man working at his desk job when he stumbles upon his old R2-D2 toy from his childhood. He picks up the busted old R2-D2 figurine and starts remembering old childhood and adolescent adventures centered around Star Wars. All of the events we see are ones that just about every Star Wars fan out there can relate to:

  • Drawing pictures of Star Wars fighters in mid-dogfight.
  • Playing "lightsaber" duels using flashlights.
  • Dressing up as Darth Vader, Yoda, or various other characters throughout childhood and middle school.
  • Dressing up bicycles as fighters and chasing one another around.

Okay, so maybe that last one is only for the really dedicated Star Wars geeks out there, but nevertheless, the majority of them are applicable to just about anyone. But that's not the best part.

Just when he's about to let out a sigh about the days gone by, an X-Wing fighter pulls up to his office window. Who is in it? His best friend, and his very own X-Wing to boot!

Personally, I found this ad to be really effective. Regardless of whether or not you plan on buying Battlefront when it comes out - or if you are simply a Star Wars fan and didn't hear about Battlefront yet - it really draws your attention in. It truly feels like a soulful homage to childhood fans of the series, and not just another "buy our game" type ad.

Maybe companies are finally understanding that Nintendo's approach to selling games might be what keeps the company going after all these years. Then again, maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Star Wars: Battlefront comes out November 17, 2015.
