MUD2MMO : How the Kick Mechanic Ruins Group Dynamics

I'm sorry, when did my MMO turn into "Survivor"?

This week we discuss getting kicked out of groups in MMO games.

If this video feels familiar, there's a reason.  A week or so ago I wrote an article on Gameskinny talking about this same basic thing.  It's been bothering me THAT much, yes.

Commentary and critique is, as always, welcomed.

I'm a gamer. I'm a reality junkie. I'm a cynic. I'm a dinosaur. I'm a writer. I'm so much more than a paragraph can say. You want more? Ok. I started a video game show on the internet some time ago. See, I've played video games since Intellivision and Atari 2600 and PONG back in the day. Retro-gaming doesn't really fire me up as much as seeing how the community ticks. And after seeing way too many "I'm too young to have played this game when it first came out but it MAKES ME SO ANGRY" reviewers who would happily eviscerate my childhood for lulz... yeah I tossed my hat into the ring. the quickly scooped it back up, I'm told I have a bald spot that needs...more »

I haven't played in groups where there was a kick mechanic before, I imagine that would really screw up the dynamic. It's tough enough when people bail because they want to leave, throwing people out because someone else wants them gone seems corrosive.

Edited to add: Love how polite the guy was at the end. Crazy (and slightly unsettling) that whilst being pelted with actual objects in real life, people are often behaving better than in virtual space.

That guy is me. That helmetcam footage is a little old, but I took that myself. The kid clocked me in the head with a 20 ounce CO2 tank that he was wearing on his back. the tank is metal (probably aluminum) and a little shorter than a 2 liter bottle of soda. It's also designed to hold 1800 PSI of pressure of compressed CO2.

He HONESTLY didn't realize how much it stuck out from his back, and he cut a corner a little short causing him to twist as he passed me, and whack me with the tank. No need to get angry, no blood, no foul. I was more reacting to the shock of "That wasn't a paintball. OW!" But no dizziness, no blood, no time outs, get back in there and go.

And when I play... I've had a lot of commentary from viewers of my helmet cam stuff that I'm the "calmest, most methodical" paintball player they've ever seen. Then again, I've HAD 20+ years of experience.
