Simulation games have grown rapidly in popularity since the release of Zynga’s FarmVille back in 2009, but if it wasn’t for games like Sim City, The Sims, Harvest Moon or even the original Civilization, the more recent simulation games you see all around Facebook wouldn’t even exist.

Fair to say, not only has Facebook been bombarded with these types of games, but so have mobile shops, like the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Not to say it’s a bad thing, but some just feel too repetitive and boring to play.

King of Avalon: Dragon Warfare, on the other hand isn’t just interesting but fun to play, with an interesting twist on simulation games that everyone is used to today. It has an improved gameplay style compared to other mobile sim games, while mixing the gameplay style with an MMO feel.

Gameplay

King of Avalon plays out like any simulator game, giving you Avalon to build and rule at your command. But the game also gives unique ways to play, such as setting up camps for troops, leveling up buildings and gaining more workers as you continue to build.

There is a problem with some of the wait times to build, as some buildings take about five minutes while bigger buildings take fifteen minutes. I have mixed feelings for this element, since it is a way to have players wait and then continue with their gaming, but also having the impatient players having to pay to complete their wait time.

Story, Era and Characters

While games like FarmVille and Harvest Moon have a basic story of building your own farm, King of Avalon puts you at the throne of your own kingdom, commanding your workers to build new buildings and commanding troops for wars. The story itself is unique, but feels a bit rushed for the very beginning, but it’s basic and simple to understand.

The characters you also encounter have their own personality, and traits that really come out when you talk to them, giving them both a fantasy yet realistic touch.

Controls

The controls are a simplistic point-and-click simulator game, clicking on plots to build, leveling up when you have the supplies and creating camps for your troops. Depending on your device, the smaller it is the harder it is to click certain areas. Although, this doesn’t matter if you are playing on a larger smartphone or tablet.

Art Style

The graphics (or art style, technically) flows just like a painting, giving players beautiful visuals, complementing colors that really allow everything to pop out even farther. The character design is also a beautiful addition compared to other Simulation/MMO mobile games, showing the true artistic skill that the designers had while making this game.

Conclusion

The game takes history and lore into its own hands, and creates a beautiful game with amazing visuals and unique characters. While there are some flaws here and there, most of them can be fixed with a simple patch. King of Avalon is recommended for everyone who is a fan of MMO sim games, and is recommended for those who would want to start those games.
