Total Tabletop: Creative Assembly License Games Workshop’s Warhammer Franchise

Warhammer tabletop games coming to the PC courtesy of Creative Assembly of Total War fame.

On 6 December, an exciting partnership of Sega and Creative Assembly with Games Workshop was announced, which will see multiple titles produced using the Warhammer fantasy IP.

Creative Assembly are the undisputed kings of the thinking player’s real time strategy. They have a flawless pedigree in bring assorted historical theatres of war to life in detailed and engaging titles from the original Shogun: Total War to the more recent visits to Rome and the Napoleonic era. Creative Assembly’s hallmark has always been highly-polished campaign gameplay and epic battles involving varied and well-researched military units.

Games Workshop is the largest manufacturer of tabletop battle games in the world and have cultivated deep and well-documented fantasy and futuristic universes which have heavily influenced video games for decades (Blizzard’s Warcraft and Starcraft games chief amongst them). For decades Games Workshop hobbyists have enjoyed waging war with a host of detailed and colourful armies.

The Warhammer universe draws heavily from world history with a dark fantasy spin on many European cultures. Throw in fantasy staples like the elves and dwarfs, along with more unique races like the devious rat-like Skaven and the corrupting demonic powers of Chaos and you have a heady concoction of new material ripe for the Total War treatment.

I look forward to a campaign across the Old World which will see more conventional Bretonnian heavy cavalry and Imperial cannons fighting alongside Wood Elf wardancers and Dwarf trollslayers against Goblin wolf riders, lunatic Witch Elves, Chaos mutants and Orc rock lobbers.

Waaaarrggh!!

After over a decade of humping and dumping the fat and the dead, my lower spine did things normally reserved for Rubik's cubes, bringing my career as a medical clinician to an unexpectedly early end. Fortunately, my real passion is in writing and given that I'm now highly qualified in the art of sitting down, I have the time to pursue it. Having blogged about video games (well, mostly EVE Online) for years, I hope to channel my enjoyment of wordcraft and my hobby of gaming into one handy new career that doesn't involve other people's vomit.
