Game industry analysts Newzoo have released their Global Games Market Report for the first half of 2016, and with it comes good news for investors.

According to the firm, game revenues are up 22% from last year, mostly thanks to mobile games. In fact, mobile games dominated the market, accounting for almost half of the top 10 companies' revenue.

Chinese gaming giant Tencent placed squarely at the front of the pack, thanks to its majority stake in League of Legends developer Riot Games, as well as various minority stakes in studios like Epic Games and Robot Entertainment, plus investments in mobile games overseas.

That lead is only expected to solidify after Tencent's $8.6 billion acquisition of Clash of Clans developer Supercell earlier this year. The company is expected to make that investment back -- and then some -- by the end of the year, with over $13 billion in revenue from games alone.

To give a sense of just how dominating Tencent has been, Newzoo pointed out that the company's profits from the first half of this year alone dwarf the profits that both Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard have ever made in a full year.

Mobile games didn't completely run the show, however. Sony came in as runner-up thanks to strong sales on the PlayStation Network and a growing base of PlayStation Plus subscribers. The console manufacturer also placed in the list of fastest growing revenue, increasing its profits almost 50% from last year.

A surprisingly high earner for the year was Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami. Konami made an abrupt and controversial exit from AAA development earlier this year, following their choice to fire long-time game director Hideo Kojima.

The company's bet seems to have paid off however, netting them the number one spot on the fastest growing companies list -- thanks to a renewed focus on mobile and casino gaming.

Another surprising addition to the list was Ubisoft, which cracked the Top 25 earners for the first time ever this year. This was mostly thanks to the huge success of its loot-based third-person shooter Tom Clancy's The Division, which drove the company's revenues up almost 200% this year.

Warner Bros., on the other hand, dropped from the Top 10 due to a lack of AAA releases this year compared to heavy-hitters like Mortal Kombat X and Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015.

The full ranking of the Top 25 public companies can be found on Newzoo's website.

Voice Actors Going on Strike Against Several Major Game Companies https://www.gameskinny.com/kfusf/voice-actors-going-on-strike-against-several-major-game-companies https://www.gameskinny.com/kfusf/voice-actors-going-on-strike-against-several-major-game-companies Mon, 17 Oct 2016 12:32:44 -0400 Alex Anderson_0905

Starting on October 21, the Screen Actors Guild will be beginning their strike against several major game publishers, including EA, WB Games, and Activision-Blizzard. SAG has been fighting for better conditions for a long time and has finally decided to take action against these companies.

In 2014, a 20-year-old contract for SAG members expired and the negotiations for a new contract have not gone in the guild's favor. Game companies want to pay actors less, fine them if their work quality to not up to company standards, and fine SAG if the agent involved in the auditions is not approved. After several months of negotiations, SAG has decided it will no longer work with companies that have these outrageous demands.

The current list of developers to be affected are:

  • Activision Productions, Inc.
  • Blindlight, LLC
  • Corps of Discovery Films, Inc.
  • Electronic Arts Productions, Inc.
  • Disney Character Voices, Inc.
  • Formosa Interactive LLC
  • Insomniac Games, Inc.
  • Interactive Associates, Inc.
  • Take 2 Productions, Inc.
  • VoiceWorks Productions, Inc.
  • WB Games, Inc.

Activision-Blizzard will be one of the major companies affected by the strike.

The group is demanding limited time and increased pay for actors doing stressful voices, such as long periods of screaming. They also want companies to start telling actors the roles they will be playing prior to their recording sessions.

Until an agreement is reached, all SAG voice actors will not do any voice work for games that started development after February 2015. This will take several big game voice actors out of the picture for a while, but the affected game companies claim that the strike will not have any major impact on upcoming titles.

What do you think? Do you side with the Screen Actor's Guild, or with the development companies they're protesting? Let us know down in the comments!

Batman: Return to Arkham delayed https://www.gameskinny.com/311gh/batman-return-to-arkham-delayed https://www.gameskinny.com/311gh/batman-return-to-arkham-delayed Wed, 29 Jun 2016 04:59:41 -0400 Joseph Ocasio

For those hoping to replay the original Arkham Asylum and its sequel, Arkham City, on PS4 or Xbox One at the end of this month will be disappointed to learn that the remastered versions of the first two Arkham games have been delayed.

Announced in the Forums section of WB Games' website, staff member Steven Grayson told the community that the game would be delaying the collection:

"After reviewing the progress of the project, the team at WB Games has decided to delay the release of Batman: Return to Arkham to give the team at Virtuos Games additional time to deliver a polished Batman Arkham game experience. We do not have a release date yet and will be sure to communicate that once we are sure the game will be ready. We know this is disappointing news, but we feel the extra time will allow the team to create the best gaming experience for our fans.

In order to keep conversations around this topic in one place, please keep any discussions regarding this news in this thread. All other posts regarding the release delay will be locked and directed to this post."

Batman: Return to Arkham was originally announced last month with a release date for July 28th of this year.

Matt Cox forms Echohead Games, aims to "create interactive memories that last a lifetime" https://www.gameskinny.com/dfinr/matt-cox-forms-echohead-games-aims-to-create-interactive-memories-that-last-a-lifetime https://www.gameskinny.com/dfinr/matt-cox-forms-echohead-games-aims-to-create-interactive-memories-that-last-a-lifetime Sun, 03 Apr 2016 06:31:04 -0400 Mark Elgie

Former THQ and Warner Bros. designer Matt Cox announced the launch of his new studio Echohead Games in Lawrence, Kansas earlier this week.

Cox has been working in the games industry for many years, acting as game designer for franchises such as Destroy All Humans! He was the lead designer of Scribblenauts for Nintendo DS. After leaving the game industry in 2009 to pursue other opportunities, he continued to develop small games for iOS and Android -- such as Sticky Bees and Phantom Flower.

Just this week, however, he announced he's returning to the fold with the formation of Echohead Games.

Echohead Games is dedicated to producing novel, genre-bending titles for consoles and PC alike. Cox, the Creative Director at Echohead, had this to say:

"I love to take calculated risks with twists that appeal to both my mainstream nerves as well as my indie instincts. I love designing core gameplay that can be fun in its simplicity, but has the depth to hook my hardcore side."

Echohead plans to release at least one title per year in order to consistently generate revenue, as well as to provide stability for internal teams. These will vary from smaller, indie-type titles to full-fledged AAA games. Cox stated that he wants Echohead to be known for switching up the landscape of AAA games, as well as pushing the boundaries of what's possible in terms of game design -- be it smaller games for mobile devices, or large-scale products for next-gen consoles like Xbox One or PlayStation 4.

Echohead will be taking advantage of the strengths and freedoms that smaller teams can afford, and the pure production horsepower that larger teams have at their disposal.

According to Cox, gameplay is king at Echohead.

"No matter if the game is big or small, production value doesn’t even apply if the core experience isn’t fun.”

The company's first title -- as of now unannounced -- will be bringing back a familiar franchise in an unexpected way.

Echohead will be releasing more information about this new project in the near future. It can be found on their website, as well as on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

One week to Mortal Kombat XL release https://www.gameskinny.com/qj87l/one-week-to-mortal-kombat-xl-release https://www.gameskinny.com/qj87l/one-week-to-mortal-kombat-xl-release Fri, 19 Feb 2016 10:09:35 -0500 KendraG

Prepare for frostbite because next week Mortal Kombat XL will be coming out.

WB Games is re-releasing Mortal Kombat X but making it bigger and better with Mortal Kombat XLMortal Kombat X was a very popular game in 2015 and was lorded as the most brutal "kombat" experience ever. More blood, more fatalities, more brutalities, and more characters.

On March 1st, 2016 WB Games will release Mortal Kombat XLMortal Kombat XL will be available on Xbox One and PS4, but not on PC. The game includes the base game (Mortal Kombat X) and both DLC Kombat packs. Mortal Kombat XL is meant for those who do not already have Mortal Kombat X, but who want to get their hands on absolutely everything.

The game will come with new playable characters, plus previously released characters. New characters include: Alien, Leatherface, Triborg, and Bo'Rai Cho. (That's right, from THE Alien. They are a Xenomorph spliced with Baraka's DNA. Beware the blades.)

So get your Drunken Fist ready, but try not to get your Puke Puddle on your consoles.

NetherRealm Studios has confirmed a new DLC for Mortal Kombat X.

Not many details were given, but it will include new playable characters, skins, and a new stage. It comes out the first half of 2016.

The DLC was hinted at a day earlier by a "Kombat Pack 1" comment during a Mortal Kombat X live stream.

The series creator, Ed Boon teased four new fighters on Twitter with an image reading, "Who's Next?"

The Predator, Tanya, and Jason Voorhees from Friday the Thirteenth have already been released for the game, so we're looking forward to see who else might step up into the game.

The DLC will presumably be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game.

Mortal Kombat X is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Andriod, and iOS. The game was originally released on April 14, 2015 and April 21 and May 4 for iOS and Android. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game were recently cancelled by WB Games due to not meeting standards.

There might as well not be an Arkham Knight PC port https://www.gameskinny.com/ifxzd/there-might-as-well-not-be-an-arkham-knight-pc-port https://www.gameskinny.com/ifxzd/there-might-as-well-not-be-an-arkham-knight-pc-port Fri, 17 Jul 2015 09:39:49 -0400 Michael Slevin

According to a recent report from Kotaku Austrailia, the Batman: Arkham Knight PC port will not be ready until at least September.

If this is the case, someone can just go ahead and tell WB Games that we don't care anymore. This is absolutely unacceptable, and WB Games can't honestly expect us to sit around and wait for several months, until possibly November, for Arkham Knight on PC.

Meanwhile, as the months pass, we will see countless exciting titles be released. This means that even if Arkham Knight for PC is finally playable, there will be big titles such as Super Mario Maker, Rainbow Six Siege, and Fallout 4 already released. We are not going back to a game that let us down when there will be several exciting and working titles that we know will respect our valuable game time (and money).

This is why there might as well not even be an Arkham Knight PC port: By the time September and October roll around, we will be busy. Busy with school, work, and tons of newly released titles.

As a college student, I have to think about what games I feel are worth $40-$60 and which ones can wait until my birthday or the holiday season. Which is why, if I were a PC gamer, I would just move on. After being disrespected, lied to, and cheated out of my money, I am now expected to wait for up to 3 more months for the game I was supposed to get a working copy of several weeks ago? No.

This situation makes WB Games look like that friend who always asks to borrow money, but never pays you back. They swear they'll have it for you soon, and then soon becomes a few weeks, and then a few weeks becomes a few months. And then you reach a point where you don't really even care about what they owe you, you just want nothing to do with them.

This will, hopefully, be an impactful lesson for WB Games and game developers everywhere. Your game must be ready to play, and if it isn't, don't sell it to the masses and pretend like everything is okay. Because it isn't.

Rarely is one game so important that we will drop everything to play it, yet alone wait an extra three or four months for a broken game to be fixed. Most gamers will move on without the blink of an eye, and drop your game as if it was nothing. Which sucks, because on consoles the game is excellent, but we shouldn't have to wait around for a game that should have worked upon release.

Let's also remember the dismal sales numbers of PC ports of games that showed up late. According to VGChartz, GTA V for PC has globally sold only 400,000 units thus far, and compared to the rampant success that GTA V has been, those sales numbers are not stellar. This is also in spite of the fact that the GTA V PC port was overall pretty great, despite it's late arrival.

Additionally, PC games coming out later than their console counterparts hurt the platform in general, and then frustration occurs on the side of PC gamers.

So Arkham Knight on PC released at a low quality. Then add the seemingly inevitable multiple-month delay, and you have set your self up for failure.

By the way, here are some of the games that come out in September: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Super Mario Maker, FIFA 16, Assassin's Creed Syndicate  and Mighty No. 9. I, along with many other gamers, will be playing those games, not waiting patiently for Arkham Knight on PC.

Add in October and November releases such as Rainbow Six Siege, Halo 5: Guardians, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Fallout 4, and Star Wars: Battlefront, and Arkham Knight on PC has become an afterthought.

Why would we go back to a game made several months ago by a company who tried to sell us a subpar product? Especially with all of the exciting titles that I listed above.

WB Games, we will move on, forget your game, and spend our time and money on games that respect our time and are worth our dollar.

So you might as well just indefinitely suspend the Arkham Knight PC port. Because, frankly, me and my friends who play games don't really care any more.

WB Games addresses Arkham Knight PC issues and DLC https://www.gameskinny.com/vvn7s/wb-games-addresses-arkham-knight-pc-issues-and-dlc https://www.gameskinny.com/vvn7s/wb-games-addresses-arkham-knight-pc-issues-and-dlc Sat, 11 Jul 2015 12:40:29 -0400 Michael Slevin

In a recent forum post, WB games has stated that the Batman: Arkham Knight PC woes have prompted a change in their internal review process.

The studio, which has come under fire for the poor PC port of Arkham Knight, also stated that the upcoming Batgirl: A Matter of Family DLC will not be coming to PC on July 14th, when the console versions of the DLC will release. WB had this to say:

"Our continued focus on getting the right PC fixes in place for the main game has had an impact on the development of all DLC content for the PC version of the game.  This means that the Batman: Arkham KnightBatgirl: A Matter of Family DLC will not be available on July 14th for those who are currently playing the PC version of the game."

WB games also claimed that fixing PC  issues is still their top priority.

Despite Arkham Knight's PC woes, I recently reviewed the game for Xbox One, citing its compelling story and fluid combat as reasons why you should play it. Let's just hope WB gets the PC port fixed so our desktop brethren can share in the adventure.

Batgirl’s gonna be playable in Arkham Knight!  Well, sort of.

No, she won’t be joining Robin, Catwoman, and Nightwing in the main game; she’ll be part of the last Arkham chapter’s $40 DLC Season Pass.  Batgirl gets her own prequel in an all-new location in A Matter of Family, the first in a series of DLCs dropping over a six-month period.

WB’s releasing two chapters after A Matter of Family: The Season of Infamy and Gotham City Stories.  The Season of Infamy sees more shiny-new story missions for Bats, where Gotham City Stories focuses on some of his key allies with missions set before and after the events of the main game.  Season Pass also gives us various Batmobiles from the past 75 years.  I might jump on this deal just for BatWest-era Batmobile.  Additional goodies include race tracks for these Batmobiles, more challenge maps, and skins for all playable characters.

Arkham Knight lands June 23 for PS4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.  No word yet on a release schedule for all this juicy DLC, but stay tuned.

It has been a very long time since we have seen a Gauntlet game, with the last installment being released back in 2005. Almost 10 years have passed, and the team at Arrowhead Game Studios have finally given us a release date for their reboot of the franchise with WB Games.

Simply titled Gauntlet, the reboot will take players back to its roots with loot, demons, and awesome co-op action. As of now, the release date is for September 3rd, 2014 and pre-orders are already available now on Steam.

Steam is currently having a sale for Gauntlet as well, but only for the 4-pack. Buy the 4-pack for Gauntlet and only pay $60 instead of $80. Pre-ordering the game will give you a Gauntlet: Darkness Calls digital comic by DC Comics, the Azkog the Demon Slayer weapon, and the Reaper’s Visage helm.

I remember playing Gauntlet Legends for the N64 with friends - we would spend countless hours trying to beat that game. I'm so excited that Gauntlet is finally coming back!

Are you excited for the reboot of this classic franchise?

As if upcoming DC Universe MOBA, Infinite Crisis, didn’t look awesome enough already, today it was announced that Atomic Poison Ivy would be added to the game’s ever-expanding Champion roster.

This definitely isn't the Poison Ivy we're familiar with. Atomic Poison Ivy exists in Infinite Crisis’s Atomic Universe, a post-apocalyptic world that features DC characters who endured a brutal nuclear war. Once the war ended, Pamela Isley woke up to find herself transformed into a terrifying human-plant hybrid and vowed to protect the earth from the humans that nearly destroyed it.

Equipped with roots and razor-sharp thorns, Atomic Poison Ivy will be joining the likes of Wonder Woman, Shazaam and Gaslight Joker as the role of Enforcer. Her skills include a number of AOE abilities and several moves that employ her passive: Toxic Growth.

Check out Atomic Poison Ivy in action in the video below.

Infinite Crisis is currently in closed beta, but expected to be released later this year.

Everyone's favourite (and highly addictive)  Humble Bundle is back! This time with games from WB Games! Notably Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City!

Now although this is a departure from Humble Bundle's indie roots, it's not the first time games from a major developer or publisher have been put in a bundle, (Humble Origin Bundle anyone?)

As usual, with the Humble Bundles, it's pay what you want for four games, beat the average donation amount for six games. Your donation is divided between the developers, the We Can Be Heroes charity, and the Humble Tip, which helps pay for bandwidth, among other hosting costs.

This Humble Bundle includes...

Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition

Arkham Asylum pits the one and only Batman against the a number of insidious villans including the Joker and Poison Ivy!  The Game of the Year edition of this 2009 hit includes all the DLC!

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

Project Origin is the sequel to the terrifying shooter F.E.A.R (First Encounter Assault Recon) pitting you, a psychic Black Ops agent against the mysterious and powerful Alma Wade.

F.E.A.R. 3

Set in the months following the events of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin , the game follows a now pregnant Alma Wade as you race to stop her, hell hath no fury like a pregnant pyschopath!

Lord of the Rings: War in the North

This epic, co-op RPG thrusts you into the world of Middle Earth as you explore content from all over the LoTR canon. Finding friends and foes both new and old!

Beat the Average to get...
Scribblenauts: Unlimited

The first PC installment of the Scribblenauts franchise lets you play as Maxwell, a rooster hatted boy with a magical notebook, create anything with your imagination to solve puzzles, help people and save the world!

Batman: Arkham City GoTY

Battle against the most dangerous of villans in the mega-prision, Arkham City. Play as Batman, Catwoman, Robin and more as you race to discover Hugo Strange's devious plans.

As a friendly reminder, many of the games in this Humble Bundle have pretty hefty system requirements so make sure your PC can handle them. The games in this Humble Bundle all require a Steam account to redeem so make sure you have one of those too! At the time of writing the bundle is only available for another 2 weeks so be sure to buy it fast before it's gone!

17 Glorious Minutes of Arkham Origins Gameplay https://www.gameskinny.com/nxr4g/17-glorious-minutes-of-arkham-origins-gameplay https://www.gameskinny.com/nxr4g/17-glorious-minutes-of-arkham-origins-gameplay Mon, 21 Oct 2013 20:36:40 -0400 J Nicole Miller

With Arkham Origins being released on Friday, WB Games released a video of some gameplay. It lasts almost seventeen full minutes and features the Batcave, but more importantly, it also features Alfred.

The game takes place early on in Batman’s career, acting as a prologue to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. In fact, it is set before Batman developed a working relationship with the Gotham City Police Department, as is shown in this gameplay video. They’re in the antagonistic point in their relationship.

The story also seems simple and easy to follow. Black Mask wants Batman dead, so he puts an enormous bounty on him. Infamous DC assassins congregate in Gotham on Christmas Eve to kill Batman.

Arkham Origins has the same basic appearance as its predecessors, especially Arkham City. Much like Arkham City, Origins is very open. You can go wherever you like and do whatever you like. You can focus on the main villains (Black Mask and the assassins), or you can go after the criminals that are lower on the food chain.

It also doesn’t hurt that, according to the video, Gotham in Origins is more than twice the size of Arkham City. Of course, that was to be expected, seeing as Arkham City took place in one, walled-off section of Gotham.

Now, if you’re a Batman fan (like I am), you’ve probably been dying to see the Batcave, especially when it’s still really new and when it has Alfred in it. Alfred has always been one of my favorite characters in the Batman continuity. Getting to see him in video game form is incredible.

The video gives us a nice tour of the Batcave and shows off some of its more exciting features. We get to see the workbench with all of Batman’s gadgets, the training area where challenge maps and various training exercises can be accessed, and the Batwing, which allows you to travel quickly around the map.

The training area is an awesome feature. You can practice using various gadgets and fighting different types of enemies. Take it from someone who died a lot in both Asylum and City: this is wonderful.

During the gameplay video, Batman has to sneak in to a precinct of the GCPD. He finds that a SWAT team is actually going after him for the bounty, too. Origins seems to be focused mainly on showing just how Batman has changed and progressed through the course of his career.

We’re used to seeing games with an established Batman, so I’m excited to play Origins when my copy is delivered on Friday. Of course, I’ll miss having Mark Hamil and Kevin Conroy as the Joker and Batman, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this game will be every bit as awesome as its predecessors.

Eurogamer Expo 2013: Preview - Dying Light https://www.gameskinny.com/v48jw/eurogamer-expo-2013-preview-dying-light https://www.gameskinny.com/v48jw/eurogamer-expo-2013-preview-dying-light Tue, 08 Oct 2013 15:42:40 -0400 Destrolyn.Bechgeddig

If any gamers out there aren't yet bored with zombies yet, you're in luck as new zombie survival horror game Dying Light will be coming to PlayStation 4, XBox One, and PC next year.

But what does this title offer beyond everything that has come before it?

A Little On The Light Side

The main concept of the game is that the vast open world becomes more dangerous as daylight fades, with general zombies becoming more aggressive and specific monsters only appearing during the dark hours.

So why the developers decided to have the demo showcase gameplay in broad daylight seems a little strange, especially as your adversaries are tame and considerably less scary in this sun-baked apocalypse.

Apart from introducing free-running as a main element of gameplay, leaping about from rooftop to balcony as if the floor was lava - or in this case, zombie infested - it didn't feel like anything particularly groundbreaking. With its equatorial locale and bloodthirsty undead, it felt more like a mere emulation of Dead Island but with a bit more running and jumping. Although it has managed to pick-up a fair few expo accolades so far this year, with indie survival horror Sir, You Are Being Hunted coming out soon and offering something different and incredibly nerve-shredding, thus winning "Best Indie Game" of the expo from us, you're left wondering why Dying Light exists.

Sounds Good to Me

But the one thing that did stand out, however, was the sound design and combat. With minimal orchestral score (there was none in the demo) you're left in a silent city with nothing but the groans of zombies and hapless cries of fellow survivors as ear candy, which is incredibly creepy, especially the latter. There's also the promise of deciding whether to save survivors of leave them fend for themselves affecting how the game plays out.

"...with a good surround sound gaming headset or cinema system, and a decent HD screen, this could well unsettle even the most hardened of survival horror fanatics."

Close up combat pulls no punches, with rotting flesh and blood-stained teeth gnashing violently in your face if you're unfortunate to get too close to the infected. If you end up playing this with a good surround sound gaming headset or cinema system and a decent HD screen, this could well unsettle even the most hardened of survival horror fanatics.

And this is where we can really see the potential in the game, and why we're baffled that broad daylight is considered a good demo choice with no raging against the dying of the light to be had. When daylight starts to fade, visibility becomes scarce and the environment more deadly. This could be a sheer heart-pounding experience (like in the 12-minute gameplay video the studio have put out), especially if the terrifying sound design keeps up through the entire game.

But until we can actually have hands-on experience of how well the dimmer world plays out, we can only be but speculative and tentative about how good a game this is. Hopefully, this lack lustre demo won't mean a lack lustre game.

This review was done after experiencing the available demo at Eurogamer Expo 2013. Changes to gameplay may be made before the title's eventual release. To learn more about the game, visit http://dyinglightgame.com.
