Best Places to Farm Oil in Ark: Survival Ascended

The best biomes for oil harvesting in Ark: Survival Ascended are the Arctic and Underwater biomes. Actually, you can find oil nodes all over the northern part of the map or in the ocean surrounding the main island. But there are a few huge oil resource nodes on the map that will provide you with all the oil you’ll ever need for survival. I marked these spots on the maps below for your convenience.

Northwest Island Oil Node

At coordinates Lat.: 4.78 | Lon.: 6.75, you’ll find a small arctic island with one of the largest oil nodes in the game. But by all means, be sure to scout the entire island for oil, as it has plenty of it at the following coordinates:

  • Lat.: 6.93 | Lon.: 2.28
  • Lat.: 8.63 | Lon.: 3.44
  • Lat.: 2.91 | Lon.: 1.56
  • Lat.: 2.46 | Lon.: 6.57

The Whitesky Peak Oil Node

If you’d rather stay on the main island, then the next best spot would be The Whitesky Peak node at coordinates Lat.: 26.09 | Lon.: 17.49. As I already mentioned, the entire Arctic biome is full of oil nodes, including such locations as The Northern Planes, The Winter’s Mouth, and The Northern Shores. Here are the coordinates of some other relatively big oil nodes in this area:

  • Lat.: 19.56 | Lon.: 12.40
  • Lat.: 8.74 | Lon.: 42.09
  • Lat.: 22.16 | Lon.: 47.44
  • Lat.: 19.83 | Lon.: 58.80

The Gulch of Lamentation Oil Node

Another massive oil node can be found off the coast of The Gulch of Lamentation in the eastern part of the main island at coordinates Lat.: 57.33 | Lon.: 91.63. But I also urge you to scout the rest of The Northeast Shores and The Southern Shores for even more oil nodes at the following coordinates:

  • Lat.: 52.95 | Lon.: 98.16
  • Lat.: 47.31 | Lon.: 92.27
  • Lat.: 75.36 | Lon.: 95.84
  • Lat.: 40.48 | Lon.: 93.78

What Gives the Most Oil in Ark?

As I already briefly mentioned above, the most efficient way to get oil is to mine oil nodes in the cold biomes using special dinos, such as Ankylosaurus and Argentavis. You can mine oil by flying over the oil nodes on the backs of Ankylosaurus or Argentavis, and if you do this as a 2-player team, then you can gather lots and lots of oil this way. But be sure to wear warm fur armor and bring along some medical brews for healing in the harsh Arctic climate.

If the cold biomes are unappealing, then the next best way to gather oil is to dive underwater using such dinos as Dunkleosteus or Megalodon. The principle is the same as above, and all you need to do is swim to the dark oil streams that are easily detectable underwater. But there’s another danger here, and that’s hostile underwater beasts that you’ll need to defend yourself from.

From my experience, it’s possible to obtain vast amounts of oil from underwater caves. But this will require you to equip a Scuba Tank for prolonged underwater breathing and use a pickaxe. However, if you can do this, then one such underwater cave may produce up to 300-400 units of oil alone.

How Much Oil Does an Oil Pump Produce?

It’s also possible to craft and use an Oil Pump for passive oil mining. Although you can craft an Oil Pump on the main island, you can only use it in Scorched Earth, Ragnarok, Valguero, Crystal Isles, Genesis: Part 2, Lost Island, and Fjordur, where you can find special oil veins. You can place your Oil Pump on top of such a vein, and it will produce 1 unit of oil every 20 seconds in real time. Once it’s been pumping oil for 28 hours, it must be replaced.

How to Craft an Oil Pump

If you decide to craft an Oil Pump for passive oil mining, you must first reach Player Level 60. You’ll also need to earn at least 24 Engram Points and unlock an Electrical Generator and a Wind Turbine. After you have all the prerequisites, you can craft an Oil Pump at one of the following stations:

  • Fabricator
  • Tek Replicator
  • Exo-Mek

Finally, you’ll need a hefty amount of resource ingredients to actually make the Oil Pump using this recipe:

  • 75 Metal Ingots / Scrap Metal Ingots
  • 25 Electronics
  • 25 Crystals / Primal Crystals

That’s it for our list of the best locations to farm oil in ARK: Survival Ascended. Stay tuned for more ASA tips and tricks, as well as helpful lists like our best mods roundup.
