Baldur’s Gate 3 Soul Coins Explained

You might've picked up a Soul Coin or two in Baldur's Gate 3, but what do they do?

Rare and found in multiple ways in Baldur’s Gate 3, you might find yourself wondering what Soul Coins do. Or if they do anything at all. Reading the item description for them doesn’t exactly make their use any clearer. Like me, you may have gotten one from saving Nadira in Emerald Grove from an assassin. Or you may have come across one somewhere else entirely. Regardless of where you got one, we’re here to explain soul coins in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Soul Coins are used to give Karlach a damage buff after you recruit her to your party (if you decide to recruit her). Karlach is a fierce barbarian who was forced to fight in the Blood War. And her heart was replaced with an Infernal Engine against her will. Soul Coins can be given to her as a buff item.

The Soul Coin Effect

When Karlach uses a Soul Coin, she gains the Infernal Fury buff. This gives her an extra 1d4 fire damage when she Rages or when she drops below 25% Health. This is a passive buff and lasts until you take a Long Rest. It might not seem like a lot, but the extra damage can add up. Aside from the bonus action required to use the Soul Coin, you don’t have to expend anything to get that extra damage.

All Soul Coin Locations

Act 1

  • Save Nadira from the Bugbear in Emerald Grove.
  • In a sarcophagus in the trapped room of the Dank Crypt (west wall).
  • In Withers’ sarcophagus in the Dank Crypt.
  • Dank Crypt’s room with four tombs has a coin in the only tomb you can loot.
  • In shelves of the room next to where Anders is hiding on the Risen Road.

Act 2

  • Kill Lann in the Moonrise Towers and pick up three coins from him, or buy them while he’s alive.
  • Move the bookcase in the Tollhouse to find a hidden room that has a coin.

Act 3

  • Through the hatch in Peartree’s house in Lower City, if you’ve taken the key from under the floorboards, you can open the chest there to get two coins.
  • The House of Hope has a safe behind a painting in Raphael’s room that contains five coins.
  • Philgrave’s mansion has a coin in a pile of viscera located on the east side of the top floor.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Soul Coins give Karlach a nice passive buff, so make sure to save them if you plan on recruiting her into your party. For more content, check out our BG3 guide hub for topics like if your Guardian choice matters or if you should use your Illithid powers.
