Is Diablo 4 Playable on Steam Deck?

Yes, Diablo 4 is playable on Steam Deck with a few workarounds. While the game isn’t officially supported on Steam Deck because Blizzard games aren’t on Steam, it’s possible to play Diablo 4 on Valve’s handheld. And to a decent level! Though the Steam Deck might not be as powerful as your PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X, Diablo 4 is still playable.

Other Blizzard games, such as Diablo 2, can be played on the Steam Deck using a few workarounds. And you’ll need to do that here, as well. Here are a few things you can do.

How to Play D4 on Steam Deck

The first method of getting Diablo 4 on Steam Deck is to use Proton. This application allows you to play Battle.net games on the Steam Deck. The process to get it working can take a bit of time, however, so be prepared for a little setup time before you enter Sanctuary. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

How to Install Proton on Steam Deck

  • Start the Steam Deck and go to Desktop Mode.
  • Open the Web Browser and download the Battle.net launcher.
  • Navigate to Discover App, and search for ProtonU.
  • Download Proton.
  • In Steam, go to the + symbol and add a Non-Steam Game to your Library.
  • Add the Battle.net-Setup.exe file you downloaded earlier by selecting All Files in the drop-down.
  • Find the Battle.net Setup “game” in Steam.
  • Right-click on it and go to Properties.
  • Navigate to Compatibility and click the checkbox to enable Proton.
  • Choose which Proton version you’d like to use. We recommend 7.0-5.
  • Launch the Battle.net Setup, which will open in Proton.
  • Right-click on the Battle.net Setup in Steam again, navigating back to Properties.
  • Update the shortcut from Battle.net-Setup.exe to Battle.net Launcher.exe. You may have to do some searching depending on where you installed the launcher on your Steam Deck.
  • Enter your information and select Diablo 4 as the game you want to install.

You should be good to go. However, if you run into trouble trying to use Proton, there is another alternative if you want to play Diablo 4 on Steam Deck.

How to Install Lutris on Steam Deck

Lutris is open-source software that many say is better than Proton. While we won’t make a judgment call here, you may find that either it’s easier to use or suits your preference better. Either way, here’s how to download and install Lutris on Steam Deck.

  • Start the Steam Deck and go to Desktop Mode.
  • Navigate to All Apps and search for Lutris.
  • Install Lutris.
  • In Lutris, click the + icon on the top left. Search for Battle.net.
  • Install Battle.net.
  • Launch Battle.net and install Diablo 4.
  • Once D4 is installed, open Steam in desktop mode.
  • Navigate to the Games tab, then to Add Non-Steam Game.
  • Add Lutris in the new window.

This will allow you to play on Lutris through Steam, where you can launch Battle.net and Diablo 4.

That’s how to install and play Diablo 4 on the Steam Deck. If you need help with any other parts of the game, such as chapter bosses, where to find Strongholds, and more, check out our growing list of D4 guides.
