The first step to using Double XP Tokens is to have some. If you haven’t played any of the more recent Call of Duty games, there are two sources of tokens: the Battle Pass and the Campaign. Playing the MW3 campaign offers XP Tokens as rewards. There aren’t many, but they do exist.

The other way is by progressing the Battle Pass. Most of the Double XP Tokens on the pass are locked behind actually purchasing the thing, but there are a few free options you can pick up. I don’t recommend spending money on the Battle Pass unless you know you’ll be playing a lot of Call of Duty, as the leveling process is a slog, even with Double XP. But if you do buy it, you should make enough COD Points to purchase the next one.

Actually using Double XP Tokens is easy. You should see a menu below the Daily Challenges selection when you’re in the pre-game lobby or the main multiplayer menu (with your Operator standing about).

It’s frustratingly dim and poorly placed, but by selecting that menu, or by pressing the “3” key on a keyboard, or pressing the left stick on controller, you’ll pull up the Double XP Token screen. There are four tiers of Token — 15, 30, and 45 minutes and one hour — and once used, the timer will start counting down no matter what you’re doing. I think they need to change it so the timer only works while you’re in a match, but that might make too much sense.

In any event, you will need to use a different Token for each type of leveling in the game. Rank tokens increase your character level, weapon tokens the level of your currently equipped weapon, and Battle Pass your Pass level. I recommend using your Rank and Weapon XP Tokens first and saving your Battle Pass tokens until Season 1 of MW3 starts in mid-December.

That’s about everything you need to know about how to use Double XP Tokens in Modern Warfare 3. For more on the game, check out our guides on how to check your K/D ratio, a list of all the multiplayer modes, and more in our MW3 guides hub.
