Dark and Darker Stuttering Fix Details

If you experience lags and stutters when playing Dark and Darker, then here are a few working solutions.

Ironmace’s dungeon crawling PvEvP game is out in Early Access with a new publisher. Using its own Blacksmith Launcher, you can buy and download the game now. But it’s not without a healthy dose of issues, such as rubber banding and lag spikes. Though it’s common for some games, especially those in EA, to have these issues, that doesn’t mean they aren’t irritating when you run into them while playing. With that in mind, here’s how to fix stuttering in Dark and Darker.

Dark and Darker Stuttering Fix Details

Here’s a quick breakdown of all the most common solutions for stuttering in Dark and Darker:

  • Change Your Server Region
  • Disable Fullscreen Optimizations
  • Turn Off Anti-Aliasing & Super Resolution
  • Switch to DirectX 11

Change Your Server Region

Server issues are typically what create the infamous rubber banding effect in Dark and Darker. It’s obvious that servers are often overloaded, especially with such a popular game becoming available again, and this makes the game incredibly laggy for players in the same region. That’s why I strongly recommend switching your server region to another one. This will allow you to play on a less populated server, which has fixed stutter issues for many players:

  1. Go to the “Play” tab from the main menu.
  2. Find the “Dungeon Map” at the bottom-left corner.
  3. Click the “Servers” option right above the map.
  4. Select any region other than your own.

Disable Fullscreen Optimizations

If the server change doesn’t help Dark and Darker‘s stuttering issues, then the problem might be fixed by tweaking your graphics settings. One of the most common things that has really helped players is to disable fullscreen optimizations. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to “/IRONMACE/Dark and Darker/” folder on your PC.
  2. Right-click on “DungeonCrawler.exe” file.
  3. Select “Properties” option.
  4. Go to “Compatibility” tab.
  5. Check the “Disable Fullscreen Optimizations” option.
  6. Confirm by pressing “Apply” button.

Turn Off Anti-Aliasing and Super Resolution

There’s another graphics option that may need to be changed if you’re looking to eliminate stuttering, freezes, or rubber banding — and that’s turning off anti-aliasing Here’s what you can do:

  1. Go to “Options” menu from the home screen.
  2. Select “Video” tab.
  3. Switch all “Visual Quality” settings to “High.”
  4. Switch “Anti-Aliasing & Super Resolution” to “OFF.”
  5. If you have nVidia graphics card, you can try switching it to “DLSS.”

Switch to DirectX 11

Most new PCs use DirectX 12 by default for their games. But Dark and Darker doesn’t support it just yet, so you need to switch it manually to use DirectX 11. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Right-click on Dark and Darker shortcut.
  2. Select “Properties” option.
  3. Type in -dx11 in the “Target” box.
  4. Press “Apply” to confirm.

Now the game will launch using only DirectX 11 and should not freeze or stutter at any point. Ironmace has said that they’ve pushed a fix for the stuttering issue on 8/9/23, so hopefully you won’t run into it any longer.

That’s everything you need to know on how to fix stuttering in Dark and Darker. Stay tuned for more Dark and Darker guides on our dedicated tips page.
