There are 12 total playable characters you can add to your party in Darkest Dungeon 2. With only four available at the beginning of the game, it’s inevitable that you’ll want to unlock the rest. Whether you love the Vestal’s healing or want to hire the Bounty Hunter, having all heroes available means you’ll be able to build better team comps before venturing out into the game’s ghastly world. Here’s how to unlock all characters in Darkest Dungeon 2.
How to Get All Characters in Darkest Dungeon 2
You begin the game with four characters unlocked:
- Plague Doctor
- Highwayman
- Graverobber
- Man-At-Arms
Once you complete the prologue, you’ll be able to unlock characters at the Altar of Hope in any order, pending you have enough resources to do so (more below). There are currently eight characters to unlock at the Altar of Hope:
- Hellion
- Vestal
- Jester
- Occultist
- Leper
- Bounty Hunter
- Flagellant
- Runaway
Where to Find the Altar of Hope
Head to the Living City section of the Altar to find the Altar of Hope. There, you’ll find the list of characters you can unlock and upgrade. As with any other unlockable at the Altar, you’ll need Candles of Hope to get more characters.
It costs eight Candles of Hope to unlock a character, so you’ll need a total of 56 Candles of Hope to get all of the heroes in Darkest Dungeon 2.
Note that you can only unlock heroes at the Altar of Hope, so once you pass it, you’ll have to complete an expedition before you can return.
The Living City section is also where you’ll upgrade members of your party, increasing their health and deathblow resistance, getting new Hero Paths, and more. Unlocking your favorite heroes first and upgrading them before unlocking more may make your expeditions easier in the long run.
How to Get More Candles of Hope
Defeating a Confession Boss for the first time, visiting locations with candles, and completing hero goals will earn you more Candles of Hope during your expedition.
