Diablo 4: How to Get Shards of Agony in Season of Blood

Shards of Agony are needed to summon a unique boss in Diablo 4. Here's how to get them.

Season of Blood has added quite a few new items to Blizzard’s ARPG and provided other important tweaks to the base game. Still, if you’re looking to defeat all of the uber unique endgame bosses, you’ll need one item above all others. Here’s how to get Shards of Agony in Diablo 4 Season 2.

Where to Find Shards of Agony in Diablo 4 Season of Blood

Shards of Agony have very specific drop requirements. You can only get them after defeating Grigoire on World Tier 4. He’s one of the five endgame bosses introduced in Season of Blood. Further, you must be the one who summons him into battle. Here’s what we need to do in detail.

How to Summon Grigoire

To summon Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint, bring five pieces of Living Steel to the Hall of the Penitent in the Dindai Flats. Deposit the items in the Light-Touched Altar, and he’ll appear.

How to Beat Grigoire

Grigoire is a beefed-up version of any Knight Penitent you meet. To beat him, use the same tactics you would against that enemy. Namely, stay out of his reach.

The biggest difference between Grigoire and a regular Knight Penitent is that he summons lightning squares around the battlefield that you’ll need to dodge to avoid the damage. He’ll also call down lightning and create a grid across the battle that you must pay attention to while dodging. If you’re like me, you may forget about these attacks and dodge right into the lighting grid while trying to avoid a melee move.

Stay fleet-footed and out of his frontal attack range to avoid the brunt of his damage. Be mindful that he employs a range of melee moves, and even if they’re telegraphed, they can deal big damage. Further, remember that he also shoots lightning orbs in a wave in front of him. Though, they deal less damage than being hit by his mace, so if you must pick one over the other, choose the orbs.

To come out of this fight successfully, I suggest increasing your lightning resistance by slotting Topaz in your Jewelry.

How to Use Shards of Agony

There’s only one use for Shards of Agony at this point in Season of Blood: summoning Duriel. You’ll need two Shards of Agony to bring the Echo of Duriel forth, and each victory against Grigoire earns you one shard. Indeed, you’ll have to face him twice if you want to square off against the hardest boss introduced in Season 2.

That’s how to get Shards of Agony in Diablo 4. Before summoning Grigoire, double-check to ensure you’re on the correct World Tier. Otherwise, your victory will be for naught.
