Hood: Outlaws & Legends Crossplay Explained: Is There Crossplay?

Does Hood: Outlaws & Legends have crossplay between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox? The answer is yes, but there are a few restrictions.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is a darker take on the lore of Sherwood Forest’s Robin Hood. It’s a multiplayer game where teams of outlaws try to steal treasures from one another while trying to get past guards and sheriffs. Seeing as gameplay revolves around co op play, some players are wondering about Hood: Outlaws & Legends crossplay between platforms. So is there crossplay?

Yes, Hood: Outlaws & Legends does feature crossplay functionality. However, it is only between certain platforms. As a developer post in the Focus Home Interactive forums states, Hood: Outlaws & Legends crossplay works between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It also works between PlayStation 4 and PS5.

That means players within the same platform ecosystem can team up or take each other on. Since PC is technically under Microsoft’s umbrella, that platform is included in Xbox crossplay. Unfortunately, at least at the time of the game’s release, crossplay does not allow PlayStation users to play with Xbox and PC users — and vice versa.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends crossplay is also based on matchmaking from a common group of players. Though it may be implemented in the future, cross platform invites are not possible at the time of launch, according to the developers. If your friends play on PS4 and you play on PS5, for example, you won’t be able to invite them to join you.

The developers said it’s meant to streamline the process and cut down on pre-release development time, while also letting players jump straight into the action without having to make a central account.

… we decided early in the project that we didn’t want to impose an account creation on players.

It means you can play the game without having to create a “Hood account”, making for a smoother experience when you start the game, and we’re happy about that!

But it also means we have no way to track each user outside of their own platform ecosystem (Steam, PlayStation account, Xbox account, etc.), which means we can’t create bridges between platforms, including invitations.

So for now, there is crossplay in Hood: Outlaws & Legends, but there are a few caveats that keep it from being all-encompassing. There’s a chance that will change in the future, but there’s no word on when that might happen.

A recent gameplay trailer gives a greater look at the game’s classes and how players will team up to achieve their goal and steal loot in each game mode, and developer Sumo Digital shared their post-launch plans with a Year One roadmapHood: Outlaws & Legends enters Early Access on May 7 for those who pre ordered the game, and it fully launches for everyone else on May 10.
