How to Have Kids in Stardew Valley

Wondering how to have kids in Stardew Valley? It's a bit involved, but we've got all the steps here.

Farming isn’t everything in Stardew Valley. Getting married, having kids, and starting a family is another stand-out feature in the popular farm simulator. Players in opposite-sex marriages can have biological children, while those in same-sex marriages can adopt.

Before you can have kids in Stardew Valley, though, you will need to find yourself a spouse, court them, then marry. We’ll cover how to do all of that in this guide.

Before you can have kids, you need to get married, which is relatively straightforward. First, you’ll need to find a single villager. Whether or not they are single is indicated in the Social tab, so check there for some potential love interests (you can learn more about that in-depth by clicking the link above).

Once you find one you’d like to court, you need to begin by getting a friendship level of eight hearts.

To get eight hearts, you’ll need 2,000 friendship points, of which there are numerous ways to earn. The best ways are:

  • Talking to them daily (in person, not over the phone) (+20, or +10 if they’re in the middle of working on something)
  • Completing item delivery quests for them (+150)
  • Gifting them something they like (two a week for +10 on the next Sunday)
  • Inviting them to the Movie Theater (+200 if they love the movie, or +100 if they like it)
  • Buying them a snack at the Movie Theater (+50 if they love it, or +25 if they like it)

Now, head to Pierre’s General Store and purchase the Bouquet for 200g. Giving it to the villager shows you are romantically interested, and it will unlock an additional two hearts to earn.

Earn those, and buy a Mermaid’s Pendant from the Old Mariner for 5,000g. He appears on the beach paste the broken bridge, that you will need to pay 300g to repair, and he only appears on rainy days after 7 p.m., so keep an eye out.

You will also need to make your first farmhouse upgrade for him to appear, which will cost you 10,000g and 450 wood.

Give the pendant to your love interest and the wedding will be scheduled for three days later. After the ceremony, the two of you will live together.

How to Have Kids

As for having kids, you will need to make the second upgrade to your farmhouse for 50,000g and 150 hardwood, adding the nursery. Once this is done, and once you have been married for at least a week, you will have a 5% chance every night that your spouse will ask if you want a child. You will need to maintain your 10 hearts of friendship for this to be a possibility.

Once you agree, a baby will appear in the crib in your nursey after 14 days. If you’re in a same-sex marriage, you will instead adopt a child after 14 days, and it will appear in the middle of the night. Couples can have no more than two kids, and these children will never grow up.

With Stardew Valley coming to Game Pass, you’re definitely going to want to be prepared to have children, as having two will earn you the “Full House” achievement. While it may add to your in-game workload, it helps to keep the game exciting as you work on your production grind.
