Smooth Stone is one of the main components to the new Blast Furnace in Minecraft, as well as a fair amount of Redstone contraptions. You need it, but how do you make it?

If you’re familiar with making Stone, making Smooth Stone is a cinch. You should be familiar with it, as it’s one of the first materials you end up smelting using your Furnace. Smooth Stone just has more refined uses.

How to Make Smooth Stone

For this you need your trusty Furnace and Cobblestone. The Furnace is easy enough to make and Cobblestone can be obtained just by mining anywhere in most biomes.

All you need to do is:

  1. Smelt your Cobblestone into Stone
  2. Smelt your Stone into Smooth Stone

It’s really as easy as that. However, as you well know, this can take some time to smelt.

Luckily, smelting is done two times faster using a Blast Furnace.

If you’re trying to make Smooth Stone to make a Blast Furnace (and later Redstone items), you can make the required three Smooth Stone using your regular Furnace and then just switch to using the Blast Furnace for further Cobblestone and Smooth Stone smelting to save time.

You can also save yourself some time by enchanting your pickaxe with the Silk Touch enchantment, which will allow you to mine Stone directly. This way you don’t have to smelt Cobblestone at all, but this is more of an option for established worlds.

This material has the added benefit of looking a lot better than Stone itself and is great for aesthetic building, emphasizing it’s best to get some Blast Furnaces built and running to give you these attractive blocks.
