How to Unlock CHEF in Risk of Rain Returns

Let's see how to unlock CHEF in Risk of Rain Returns and give you an easy way to do so.

CHEF is one of our favorite robot cooks ever and if you want to play as him you’ll have to gather some exotic cooking ingredients. Let’s show you how to unlock CHEF in Risk of Rain Returns.

Despite his title, CHEF isn’t a support-based cook character but a badass Magma Worm-slicing Hell’s Kitchen DPS. Unlocking him involves a tedious process of collecting certain items but we have a quick tip at the end so stick around.

Risk of Rain Returns: How to Unlock CHEF

If you want to unlock CHEF you’ll have to gather the following items during a single playthrough:

  • Meat Nugget
  • Bustling Fungus
  • Sprouting Egg
  • Bitter Root
  • Foreign Fruit (Equipment)

As you can see they are all cooking ingredient-themed and a bit tricky to acquire in one run. That said, you don’t have to have Foreign Fruit equipped throughout the run. If you pick it up once and replace it with other Equipment, it’ll still count towards unlocking CHEF. Furthermore, the four passive items are all of common rarity so they are slightly easier to get than higher rarities.

How to Easily Unlock CHEF in Risk of Rain Returns

There’s a simpler way to unlock CHEF that can trivialize the process. I recommend finding the Artifact of Command. Essentially, activating the Artifact of Command during the run makes it so that items are no longer random. Instead, they drop as special chests where you can select the exact item you want.

With Command active, you simply need to find four common (white) item chests and an orange one for equipment. The former will contain all four food-themed items and the last one will contain Foreign Fruit. This method allows you to unlock CHEF in the first or second stage at most.
