Wars in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity aren’t won through determination alone. You’ll need to keep your team well equipped to make the most of battles. Like any Zelda game, Age of Calamity rupees serve as your currency, and you’ll need them to unlock numerous quests throughout the game. To avoid grinding, rupee farming is the way to go.
With that in mind, this guide outlines the best ways to farm rupees and just how Age of Calamity utilizes them.

Where to Find Rupees in Missions
Each mission in Age of Calamity contains numerous destructible boxes and barrels across the battlefield — filled with rupees.
Treasure chests often hold rupees too, which are awarded for defeating powerful enemies. These foes have health bars and can be spotted on the mini-map, though they often show up in outposts that need to be reclaimed.
Completing a mission grants you a first-time clear rupee bonus. Quick clear times and high K.O. counts also add a maximum of 400 rupees more, 200 each. Rewards don’t change if you’ve selected easier difficulties, mind, though you’ll clear missions quicker.
Increase Rupees Earned With Cooking
Four food recipes offer increased rupees as a stat bonus, so consuming meals before missions is a great strategy for quick farming.
The first recipe you’re likely to come across is the Honey Candy meal, unlocked after completing “The Road Home, Besieged,” and it increases your earned rupees by 20%.
Honeyed Fruits can be unlocked after completing “Bee Very Careful,” while Honey Crepe is unlocked much later in-game by finishing “The Great Plateau,” both of which offer a 30% increase instead.
If you fancy more of a challenge, Dubious Food makes a return to Age of Calamity too, offering a 100% increase but costs 20% of your maximum health, so this one is not advised lightly.

- Dubious Food — 2x Hot-Footed Frog, 2x Hearty Durian, 2x Rock Salt
- Honey Candy — 2x Courser Bee Honey
- Honeyed Fruits — 2x Courser Bee Honey, 2x Hydromelon, 2x Hearty Durian, 2x Voltfruit
- Honey Crepe — 1x Cane Sugar, 1x Bird Egg, 1x Courser Bee Honey, 1x Tabantha Wheat, 1x Fresh Milk
Can I Get Rupees via Amiibo?
Not directly. Much like Breath of the Wild, amiibo are also compatible with Age of Calamity, providing some additional unlocks. It should be clarified that unlike Breath of the Wild, though, they don’t offer exclusive items like costumes or Epona, so anything gained here can be unlocked during normal gameplay.
Amiibo can be scanned up to five times a day (more if you change the Switch’s date settings), and these don’t need to be Zelda specific amiibo either; even the Duck Hunt Duo amiibo in your collection will suffice.
It won’t provide rupees, but this method offers a random selection of weapons and materials, which you can sell instead.
How to Sell Items
There are two ways you can sell items for rupees.
The Blacksmith will allow you to sell any old junk you’ve accumulated, best for old weapons. Those can go as high as 500 rupees and considering how quickly you pick up new weapons, you have little reason to keep them.
As for monster parts, certain merchants will appear that will buy them from you. They’ll each be interested in different items. If a star appears next to the goods, that means you’ll be paid extra for that item.
How to Spend Rupees
You’ll earn EXP during battles, which slowly levels up your characters, but rupees can be used to speed up the process. This is done at the Military Training Camp once it’s unlocked, so anyone with a rupee stash can put it to good use here.
It’s also noting that characters can only be levelled as far as your strongest character, so you can’t abuse this system.
The Blacksmith can also be paid in rupees, letting you fuse old weapons together to make them stronger if you don’t want to sell them. Considering Age of Calamity doesn’t have Breath of the Wild’s durability system, you won’t need to worry about breaking them either, so feel free to upgrade as you please.
As mentioned before, there are a good number of quests that also require rupees to be unlocked. These normally range around 1,000-1,500 rupees, but one quest, “Offering Help on the Road,” requires 4,500 rupees to unlock.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launched last month as Nintendo’s surprise holiday release, having only been announced two months beforehand and honestly, we thought it was excellent.
