Final Fantasy 16 is just around the corner, launching on PlayStation 5 this June. But if you don’t have the platform and instead play in Microsoft’s ecosystem, you may be wondering if FF16 is coming to Xbox. Here’s what you need to know.
Will Final Fantasy 16 Be on Xbox Series X|S?
At this time, there has been no mention of Final Fantasy 16 heading to an Xbox console. The development focus has consistently been on designing the game utilizing the PS5’s technology and the console’s memory and processing capabilities.
Square Enix has maintained their PS5-only stance. In an interview with 4Gamer, producer Naoki Yoshida stated, “FF16 has so far relied on PS5’s performance for game design, creation, and optimization.” By not having to worry about shipping the game on multiple platforms, the developers have been able to focus on “fine-tuning and optimization.”
FF16 is also under an exclusivity contract with Sony. Due to Sony Interactive Entertainment co-developing the game by providing hardware engineers, assistance with fine-tuning optimization, marketing support, and more, Final Fantasy 16 will remain a PS5 exclusive until the end of 2023.
While many may see Final Fantasy as a PlayStation-exclusive series, Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy 15 launched on both PlayStation and Xbox consoles Day One. Indeed, various Final Fantasy titles, like FF7, have been included in Game Pass, as well.
The most recent Final Fantasy title to release on Xbox was Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin in March 2022 for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, another Day One release.
Does this mean that FF16 will release on Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2024? There hasn’t been any word one way or another to confirm this, so fans on Microsoft’s platform will have to wait and see. After all, there’s no firm confirmation of Final Fantasy 16 releasing on PC, either.
