SteamWorld Build: How to Keep Workers Happy

Turn that frown upside down, because here's how to keep workers happy in SteamWorld Build!

Residential builds are your source of citizens. Take the Worker Residence, for instance, which you can upgrade only when workers in that residency are satisfied. So here’s how to keep workers happy in SteamWorld Build.

Why You Should Keep Your Workers Happy in SteamWorld Build

It’s vital to keep your citizens/workers satisfied. If not, it’ll result in negative income, which you don’t want. Instead, focus on fulfilling their needs. Each fulfillment grants you extra money and an extra worker. The happier the citizens, the higher the residential tax!

Manage Your Resources

Resources are produced in Refineries and are consumed by the citizens living in Worker Residence buildings. For example, Cactus Water is a type of resource needed to keep them satisfied. If the demand is higher than the production, the citizens won’t be able to fulfil their needs to their total capacity. This reduces the satisfaction bar and results in fewer workers and taxes being generated. For this reason, it’s vital to appease the working citizens by providing them with the appropriate resources.

Build Service Buildings

Additionally, Service Buildings are required to keep citizens happy. Once a worker is upgraded to a new tier, such as going from Worker Residence to Engineer Residence, they’ll demand more buildings to maintain their satisfaction. It’s also vital that the new buildings are in their vicinity. Otherwise, it won’t affect their satisfaction levels. You’ll be able to tell if it’s close enough by the blue lines displayed on the screen. This would show if a building connects to the Engineer Residence, for instance.

When your residential upgrades increase, their needs will too. As a result, Artisan Residence and Scientists will also start requesting elaborate buildings, such as the Fine Dining Restaurant for Artisan citizens.

Here’s what you’ll need to start production for that:

  • Cattle Farm
  • Charcoal Kiln
  • Forester
  • Oil Refinery
  • Oil and Ironium

As you can see, placing down a building becomes a lot less simple! This can initially be a bit overwhelming when a bunch of unhappy faces appear on your screen. Don’t worry, I’ve been there too! The best way to conquer this issue is to designate a space for every type of residential building. By doing that, you can surround them with the service buildings and resources they require.
