Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Guide: How to use Roy effectively

Here's some tips, tricks and sweet moves for Roy in SSB4

Ever since the Melee era, Roy has been a big favorite of mine. I’m a big fan of the Fire Emblem characters in Super Smash Bros, because they all have unique sets of moves and different mechanics overall. When Roy was announced for Super Smash Bros for the Wii U, you can only imagine my excitement. The way he feels in SSB4 is unbelievable. So unbelievable that I had to make a guide with some sweet tricks to really get the best out of Roy.

Roy is a good character to use because of his no-nonsense playstyle. He’s best for people who like to get up close and personal with their opponents. This is mainly because the middle and base of his sword does the most damage and has the highest knockback. Unlike Marth’s sword, the tip of Roy’s sword is very weak and has very little knockback.

Pros
  • Has high speed
  • His moves hit really hard
  • Has a lot of potential combos
Cons
  • His reach is not that great
  • His recovery is mediocre at best

Some Sweet Combos

Tip: Most of these combos work best when the opponent is at a low percentage.

Down throw into up B

Down-throw into neutral A into side tilt

This works best with opponents with less than 10 percent.

Down throw into either forward smash or up smash

Forward throw into dash attack

As long as your opponent doesn’t tech the fall, this will work!

Tip: Roy’s neutral air automatically cancels after a short hop, making it an excellent tool for approaching opponents. Since it auto cancels, its also a good move to start combos with.

Short hop neautral air into dancing blade

Short hop neutral air into forward air

This can be done multiple times if you read your opponent properly.

Short hop neautral air into dash attack

Miscellaneous Tips:
  • Roy’s Neutral B has very little ending lag, making it a good move to bait in opponents. After your Neutral B you can instantly follow up with an Up B or even smash attacks!
  • Roy’s Up B also has super armor during start up and can be a good move to use out of a shield (not all the time though, don’t wanna get too predictable!)
  • Roy’s up tilt is also a very good kill move! And can be used out of a shield or after dodging, which can really throw your opponents off.
  • Roy’s fast fall speed is pretty high, which can be a bad thing or a good thing. It’s great for closing the gap between your opponents, just be careful you don’t fall off the stage too fast!
