Imangi Studios has a hit on their hands with their sequel to Temple Run. Temple Run 2 released on iPhone and Android in January of 2013, and in December of 2013 for Windows Phone 8. The game is an endless runner platform which means you need quick hands and finger swipes. Here are some beginners tips to help you get started.

Get Warm, Get Loose

The game is fairly fast paced and you will need both hands to play the game. With one hand, you will be tilting the phone side-to-side, while the other will be swiping in four different, random directions. Be sure to stretch your arms and flex your fingers. This game does need coördination.

Get Coins!

In Temple Run 2, players have the ability to upgrade power ups, buy new characters, and buy single-use utilities in the in-app store. Players can either buy coins and spend money out-of-pocket, or coins can be collected in-game. Before you play, visit the store. You can start play with 250 coins by simply following their Twitter account.

Once a player is in-game, they can begin to collect coins as they run through the map. Unless your skills are really good, don’t try to get them all if you feel there is a risk of death (which is not a great thing in an endless runner). Build up your skills while gathering as many coins as you can. Coins also help your scoring. Each coin will add five points to your total score.

How to get free coins at start:
  1. Hit Menu at the bottom of the start screen.
  2. Hit the Free Stuff icon in the first row.
  3. Follow on Twitter.

While you are there, be sure to do the first two options as well for the gems and check out the daily and weekly challenges that help you get more coins for free.

Try Not to Die

Death has its penalties. In order to resurrect the first time, it’s easy. Players have the choice of watching a video ad for a free resurrect, or pay 1 gem. If you choose the video, you will have to watch it to the end to get credit. You can mute the sound if you choose to. After you resurrect, you get to spin the wheel. Spinning the wheel gives players chances to win:

  • Extra coins
  • Extra gems
  • 500 meters that the game will advance you automatically through any obstacles

The power up meter will be empty when you come back into the game following a resurrection. Be wary of dying more. You only get the free option the first time through a run. If you continue to resurrect on a single run, the gem cost will get higher with each death.

Wisely Choose Power Ups

Players should be strategic while picking out new upgrades. In the early stages, focus should be more on coins before any other options. Two upgrades to select first would be:

  • Coin Value (doubles coins after 1,500m ran)
  • Coin Magnet (increase duration by 25% – more time for coins to be drawn to you)

From there, it’s up to you to plan the rest of your strategy.

Pick the Best Platform

The last time to give is to choose a device that works for you. I tried both my tablet and my smart phone. I found the tablet was slow to respond to swipes and not as easy to tilt left and right as my cell phone was.
