What Difficulty Should You Play Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun?

Are you looking for a chaotic bloodbath or a fun nostalgic experience? You can adjust your difficulty in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun to cater to your preferred style of play. However, be prepared for a challenge no matter what!

Even though Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun looks like a retro experience, that doesn’t mean it’s any less challenging. It has the chaos and gore of a Doom game and plenty of complex levels, so here’s what difficulty you should play in Warhammer 40,000 Boltgun.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Difficulty Guide

There are four different difficulty levels to choose from as you begin a new game in Warhammer 40,000: Bolt: Low, Medium, Hard, Exterminatus. Your first thought may be to go Medium to Hard difficulty, especially if you are an experienced FPS player, but you may want to put more thought into it.

I quickly realized that looks can be deceiving. Even though it seems like a casual retro FPS, it is far more challenging than expected. The first few levels may fly by like a breeze but hit the fourth or fifth and greater difficulties will suddenly prove to be more of a headache.

All Difficulty Differences in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun

As you increase difficulty, you will notice a variety of differences among them that will make the game more complex:

  • Enemy placements change
  • Increased amount of enemy spawns
  • Tough enemies spawn in earlier levels
  • More tough enemies spawn
  • Enemies have increased health
  • Enemies deal more damage

These are all the major changes you will notice as you adjust your difficulty. The Low difficulty will have the base amounts of these, and those amounts grow for each following difficulty until you get to the max numbers in Exterminatus. These changes are not exactly subtle, and even the jump from Low to Medium made the game much more challenging.

If you’re looking for a casual and fun experience, I suggest sticking to Low to Medium difficulty, even as someone experienced with FPS games. Hard to Exterminatus is bound to be a sweaty time with unbelievable numbers of enemies that deal significant damage with every hit. However, if you’re looking for a challenge, jump in and try it for yourself and then change it to what feels right.
