Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) — Dyeing to Find It Quest Guide

We're dying to tell you the solution to the Dyeing to Find it Shrine quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Dyeing to Find It Shrine quest is possibly the most cryptic quest in the entire game. It will have you scratching your head more often than not. The reward is worth it, though, as it’s another of Rauru’s Blessings and a chest with a Magic Scepter that’s great when combined with treasures like opals. However, the biggest barrier to these rewards is the riddle hiding the shrine. Here’s our complete guide to help you solve and complete the Dyeing to Find It Shrine quest in Tears of the Kingdom.

To get the TotK Dyeing to Find It quest, head over to the spot marked on my in-game map above. It’s just southeast of Lanayru Wetlands at coordinates (2397,-0521, 0154). There is a piece of the sky kingdom ruins lodged into the ground near an enemy outpost and a patrolling Lynel. After reaching the top of the ruins, talk to the construct to get the quest.

TotK Dyeing to Find It Quest Riddle Solution

The Dyeing to Find It quest starts with a riddle given by the construct. It says, “When the sun awakens in the sky, dye the white pattern black. Then will the sacred shrine appear.” To get the quest puzzle solution, break the riddle apart.

  • “When the sun awakens” means at dawn or early morning.
  • “…dye the white pattern black.” is a little confusing. Scan around to find a nearby landmark and a turning mechanism. The landmark leaves a shadow that passes over a pit and hits a white pattern on the wall that has a striking resemblance to the landmark. To solve the second half of the riddle, turn the landmark until the shadow matches the white pattern it passes over.

Unfortunately, the landmark won’t match the pattern completely. Its shadow will always have one side that sticks out. To match the pattern, you’ll have to use the Ultrahand ability on the wooden planks lying around and hold them up to the landmark so the shadow looks complete.

With all that in mind, use the campfire by the landmark to rest until 5 am. Then turn the landmark to match the shadow to the pattern. Lastly, use the wooden plank to complete the shadow.

After doing this, the Shrine will appear, and you’ll be able to walk in for another Light of Blessing and the Magic Scepter.

And that’s how to complete the Tears of the Kingdom Dyeing to Find It Shrine quest. As a bonus, the construct will say its task is complete and mention something about a Dive Ceremony. If you’re after more shrine guides or walkthroughs, check out our Zelda: TotK guides page here.
