Modern Warfare on Console to Get Mouse and Keyboard Support

The fully cross-platform title will support all peripherals, but a small catch means players won't necessarily have the advantage.

Prepare for war, console players. Infinity Ward recently confirmed that the console version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is compatible with mouse and keyboard, two of the deadliest weapons in the FPS genre.

In a rather in-depth post over on the PlayStation Blog about the game’s multiplayer, Modern Warfare‘s Design Director Joe Cecot revealed that players will be able to use mouse and keyboard inputs on the PlayStation 4.

As expected, there is no mention of the Xbox One in the PS4-centric blog post. However, since the Xbox One also supports mouse and keyboard for a growing number games, it’s a safe bet the input devices will also work on Microsoft’s console.

However, adding M&K functionality on consoles won’t go far in settling the perennial input debate between PC and console players. Cecot said that matchmaking will be done based on the peripherals detected before each match. Players using controllers will be matched with other players using controllers and vice versa across platforms.

Reportedly, players will not be able to switch input devices after a match has started.

Modern Warfare is a cross-platform game, pitting players from the PC, PS4, and Xbox One against each other in online multiplayer. The title joins Fortnite, Rocket League, and Dauntless as the only games to currently support full cross-platform functionality.

Although it was previously rumored, it looks like Modern Warfare will not have a battle royale mode at launch. As of this writing, Infinity Ward says that it “focused on core multiplayer” at the moment.

Focusing on a more realistic experience, Infinity Ward has also opted to exclude the series’ popular zombies mode this year. Campaign Gameplay Director Jacob Minkoff said that:

We’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.

We’ll soon see if the absence of either mode hurts this soft reboot of 2007’s Modern Warfare when the game releases on October 25.

We bet that it won’t.
