Gears 5 joins Cyberpunk 2077 on a growing roster of Smart Delivery System games to receive free upgrades to the Xbox Series X.

With a new gen of consoles on the horizon, anyone jumping onto current AAA games might wonder if they need to re-buy their collection of brand-new titles. That won’t be the case for at least a few Xbox Series X games, including The Coalition’s Gears 5, thanks to the Smart Delivery System.

Gears 5 is now confirmed to receive a free optimized update at the launch of the Xbox Series X console. If you already own Gears 5 for the Xbox One, you get the updated Series X version at no cost.

So far we know the optimization will see a boost in visual fidelity, with the console edition to essentially present as the Ultra graphics setting of the current PC edition. The upcoming Series X version of Gears 5 is additionally set to include software ray tracing, better overall shadow effects, and a boost to 60fps for cut scenes.

While we don’t have a full list yet of what games will utilize the Smart Delivery System for immediate Series X updates, CD Projekt Red recently confirmed Cyberpunk 2077 will also get a free upgrade.

Gears 5 is still currently available to play for free on Xbox One and PC for all Game Pass owners.
