We are only a little over a week away from the arrival of the Taken King. He’s bringing his army of the Taken and he’s pissed you pulled the network plug on his son. Destiny has come a long way from its launch, the two expansion packs brought enough content to keep players interested after losing a lot of players from vanilla destiny due to burn out.
Bungie has nerfed, buffed, and patched almost everything in the game—almost enough to make one believe that was vanilla Destiny just a beta? I kid. But honestly it’s exciting to see the growth such widely hyped game that’s been praised and bashed all in the same breath. The Taken King is set to take Destiny to new heights, and here are five reasons you should be excited.
Let’s be honest, vanilla Destiny had an incoherent mess of a story. There was zero explanation to anything, you barely knew why you doing most missions, and the Speaker said he would tell me about “the Darkness” . . . but he decided not to?
Now, don’t be led to believe there isn’t a rich lore to the game. Destiny is rich with narrative and backstory, only problem is you’ll have to read your grimoire cards in order to find out.
Now with the launch of the Taken King, not only is Bungie focusing on more cutscenes and expanding the knowledge of the story in-game. Your ghost will be able to scan objects and give a little information about the world your guardian inhabits as audio logs.
The Taken King is revamping the leveling system for Destiny. The new max will be level 40, and light level will not be the way to level. Although light level will still be around, it will now be dependent on your gear as an entirety. That means guns, class items, and ghost’s shells now play a part in your light level. As for your character level, you’ll be grinding for experience points through new quests to reach level 40.
You remember that empty sub-class slot on your character screen? Yeah, it’s finally getting filled in. Guardians will be receiving a boost in sub-classes filling tri-burn set up for everyone. Meaning every class will have access to void, solar, and arc supers.
Warlocks (arc) will receive Stormcaller allowing to pretty much be freaking thunder lords blasting arc beams as the hover around the battlefield. Titans (solar) are receiving the Sunbreaker class. This gives them a flaming hammer in which they can melee or throw at their enemies, completely shattering the battlefield. Lastly, Hunters (void) will be receiving the Nightstalker class. This grants the Hunter a cross bow that, like the golden gun, will annihilate enemies - but in a chained attack.
The Taken King, Oryx, is stationed out in his huge, badass ship: the Dreadnaught. Guardians will be able to explore this new area - without the help of your sparrow, by the way. This area is expected to be massive and you can assume you’ll be running into some of the expansion's vicious new enemies, the Taken. The Taken are darkness-fueled enemies serving Oryx. The Taken come from all of the other enemy factions to make up one huge army. Be prepared to be overwhelmed when Taken Servitors and Cabal come your way.
Lastly, be prepared for a slew of new exotics and legendries. Also don’t expect your current guns to hold up much weight. Game Informer reported seeing lots commons that were stronger than the better of year one exotics. Xur is set to bring a plethora of new guns, while the new raid is also bringing some great gear.
The Taken King is hyping up to be a great expansion to Destiny. We’ll only know for sure if it delivers when it launches September 15th. What do you think of the new expansion? What are you excited for most?
