[Updated] CCP after EVE/DUST DDoS Attack: ‘at no time was customer data compromised’

EVE Online and DUST 514 are back online after being taken down by a DDoS attack. But what happened? CCP's Chief Operating Officer, CCP Spielmann, releases some details.

After more than 24 hours since the initial DDoS attack, CCP Games finally returned service to their single-sharded game server cluster – which services both EVE Online and DUST 514 in a single persistent universe – and their supporting websites.

The attack was first noted at 0205 UTC on June 2nd and normal service finally resumed at 1013 the following day.

Due to excellent communication through various means including Facebook, Twitter and G+, CCP personnel managed to keep their customers as informed as possible (Cyanide Studio take note) during what must have been a challenging 24-hour period on a Sunday.

It was apparent that the server outage was a precautionary measure as CCP’s technical staff performed an investigation. Jón Hörðdal Jónasson, Chief Operating Officer, published a statement explaining some of the details:

“What we can now confirm is that a person was able to utilize a vulnerability in one of the back-end services that support the operation of the Tranquility server. This vulnerability has now been secured and thoroughly tested.

We would like to stress that at no time was customer data compromised or accessible in any way.”

Jónasson went on to state that the situation will continue to be monitored and that compensation for players is being discussed.

It is unknown at this time the planned release of the Odyssey expansion on 4th June has been affected, but daily downtime will be performed as normal at 1100 UTC, as announced by Software Director CCP Explorer:

Update: CCP Explorer also confirmed that Odyssey deployment will go ahead as planned.
