Minecraft might head to 3DS and Wii U soon – “If I had it my way, we’d be on everything”

Mojang has expressed the ambition to launch on several more consoles, including the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U; both of which could be great for this sandbox game.

While many developers can be picky about their console choices, Microsoft’s Minecraft developer Mojang has never had any reason to dislike Nintendo. Mojang has now said it aloud: they would love to expand to the 3DS and Wii U.

Moving to Nintendo?

Mojang has made it very clear that they want to move onto as many consoles as they can, and Nintendo would be a prime target for their sandbox game, Minecraft. Using the gamepad on the Wii U would bring a touchable ability to move your character around while also building the world. It’s quite unclear why Minecraft hasn’t expanded onto Nintendo products, as the hardware could support the game with minimal changes, and there are online capabilities already built in.

The Nintendo 3DS would be quite the challenge with compressing the game and would result in a lighter version, akin to the smartphone version. But if Super Smash Bros. can make it fine on 3DS, I don’t think a simpler version of Minecraft couldn’t either.

Minecon in London and some Information

During Minecon 2015, Mojang’s COO Vu Bui discussed the future of Minecraft and what he would like to see moving forward. Among his opinions, it is clear that Nintendo is on his radar.

“If I had my way, we’d be on everything.”

“We want to continue to be available to all players, and that means being on new platforms because everyone uses something different.”

“…I’ve never heard a reason why we haven’t ended up on Wii U or 3DS. It just hasn’t happened yet.” – Minecon 2015, Mojang COO Vu Bui

Minecraft’s Future

Although Mojang is thinking long-term with their console ambitions, their closest milestone includes the launch of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition on July 29th, which is highly anticipated by those upgrading their OS systems.
