FFVIII's Triple Triad is now available as mobile game

The classic card game from Final Fantasy VIII is now a stand alone title on Android and iOS.

Square Enix has recently released Triple Triad, a card game that debuted on Final Fantasy VIII, as a stand-alone title on iOS and Android.

Triple Triad is available by downloading the Final Fantasy Portal App. Triple Triad and the Portal App are both free. For those not familiar with Triple Triad, it is a card game with a huge collection featuring cards based on almost every Final Fantasy Game.

There are a variety of different rules that limit your moves or give different goals to accomplish to win your match.  For those new to the game, you can battle AIs while those more experienced can face other players online. You gain new cards by accomplishing achievements and winning them from defeated opponents.

Square’s willingness to port Triple Triad to mobile platforms might be connected to the huge fan approval of games like Hearthstone, but Triple Triad is not quite the game Hearthstone is. Since Triple Triad is free there is a stamina system implemented, naturally concerning crystals in true Final Fantasy fashion.

The player can have at maximum five crystals and every match played will cost one crystal. Crystals do regenerate, provided you have less than five, every thirty minutes of real-time. Naturally you can spend real money to buy crystals for those who can’t wait.

Despite having a stamina system, it is nice to see Triple Triad released as a stand-alone title on the mobile platform. Triple Triad has a lot of fans and now it's available as F2P.

I'm a recent graduate from Kenyon College with an English Major, emphasis in Creative Writing, and a History Minor. I love video games passionately. I love most games, a little iffy on Sport Games. The first game I can remember playing was either Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 or the first Harry Potter computer game. The first console/gaming device I can remember owning was a Gameboy Advance and I loved my Pokemon Silver game to death.

funny story there is another Triple Triad (same base concept, fewer cards and a cheap knock-off) game in the iOS app store. Looks like I downloaded the wrong one.

This is actually super exciting news for me. I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing this game in Final Fantasy VIII and actually having to force myself to get back to the main story line
