Larian Leaving Baldur’s Gate Behind Isn’t a Bad Thing

It's sad that BG3 won't be continued, but it's for the best that Larian moves forward.

It’s official. Larian Studios’ CEO confirmed at GDC that they aren’t making any DLC, expansions, or sequels for Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, the studio decided to move on to new projects that aren’t related to Dungeons & Dragons. While the news is disappointing, Larian leaving Baldur’s Gate behind isn’t a bad thing.

I was among the many players hoping for Larian to announce more content for BG3. It’s hard not to when the game sucks you into its world and makes you love its characters. However, when Swen Vincke, Larian’s CEO, talks about the studio’s future, it’s exciting even without Baldur’s Gate in that future.

Larian’s Developers are Passionate about Their New Projects

In an interview with IGN, Swen Vincke mentioned that the team considered adding more content to BG3, and even diving into BG4. However, the team realized that they were doing it out of a sense of obligation rather than passion, and that led to them changing their course and making the decision to leave Baldur’s Gate behind.

Passion isn’t the only reason for changing their next project. Vincke mentions that the 5e system for D&D brings difficulties with it when transforming it into a video game setting. Larian plans on taking a new direction with combat that isn’t compatible with 5e, which leads to them parting ways with Wizards of the Coast. However, pursuing a project they’re passionate about means that great things are in store for the future. Larian proved their talent through both Divinity 2: Original Sin and BG3, so I can’t wait to see the next project they pour their hearts into.

Larian leaving Baldur’s Gate behind isn’t a bad thing, and it’s not due to the actions or policies of WotC—a rumor that Vincke cleared up on X (formerly Twitter). Games made out of passion tend to be better than those made out of obligation. I’m sad to say goodbye to Tav and their companions, but I’m excited to see what adventure Larian takes us on next.
