No more Wi-Fi for the Nintendo Wii and DS

Nintendo wants to "thank [their] fans for their continued support of [their] company’s legacy systems."

Nintendo was the ol’ go to in the video game world for a lot of players. Although recently with the Wii U sales numbers not being at the top of the charts, many have started to fall off the Nintendo wagon.

Nintendo has not let this stop them from releasing a successful console in the 3DS, although things are looking pretty grey at the moment for the future of Nintendo.

They stated today on their website that they will no longer be providing online services for Wii, DS, and DSi consoles. Through Nintendo Wi-Fi connection players could use services like online play, matchmaking, and leaderboards – all of which will no longer exist.

Titles will no longer have online components on these systems.

They also listed some titles that might be affected by the change in services. Games like Animal Crossing: Wild World, Mario Kart DS, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and a good number of Pokémon games are no longer supported.

They did say that online games for the Wii U and 3DS will remain the same.  “Other online functionality—such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop, and video-on-demand services—is also not affected at this time,” said Nintendo.

Nintendo has not had the best couple of months and hopefully this will not affect their current situation anymore than necessary.

What are your thoughts about the discontinued Wi-Fi? Does it even matter?
