What are the 10 Best Minecraft Zombie Apocalypse Mods in February 2024?

10. The Hordes

Nothing says zombie apocalypse like repeating waves of the undead, which is the focus of The Hordes. Once it’s midnight, you and your base will be bombarded with multiple attacks until the morning. An Infection mechanic that can kill players and spawn a zombie version of them can also be enabled. All of the above and additional settings have different configurations so that you can fine-tune your apocalypse experience.

9. Zombie Awareness

If you wish the bloodthirsty mobs were more intelligent, you’ll want to download the Zombie Awareness mod. This makes it so that zombies, and other monsters if you want, can become attracted to light sources or sounds. It also has a feature where you’ll spill blood when taking damage or at low health, which can trigger enemies. I find this one to be a fun modifier for mobs that’s worth adding to other worlds, too.

8. Rotten Creatures

All eight of the main new zombie variants from the Rotten Creatures Minecraft mod.

It can be hard to convey a zombie apocalypse in Minecraft when they all look the same, which is why I recommend Rotten Creatures. Variety is the main purpose of this mod, as it adds eight new zombie types. Each one has unique spawn locations/triggers, abilities, and further variants in some cases. This is easily one of my favorites simply due to how much of a difference these new mobs make.

7. Suspicious Zombification

A Suspicious Ritual setup in the Suspicious Zombification mod.

Being undead isn’t limited to only humans and horses with Suspicious Zombification. Install this and you can create zombie versions of chickens, cows, pigs, sheep, and cats. Plenty of other secrets can be discovered including the Zombie Cove structure, the Suspicious Pumpkin Pie, and the Suspicious Ritual mechanic. I like this mod simply because these are all fun changes that feel right at home with the vanilla game.

6. Zombie Plague 2 – Hardcore Zombie Apocalypse

If you’re in the mood for a bigger overhaul, the Zombie Plague 2 mod might be of interest. The flesh-eating mobs will be your primary enemy and they’ll be far more relentless with the ability to dig blocks. You’ll need to rely on food, medicine, and plenty of guns to stay alive. Procedurally generated cities with a wealth of secrets will keep things fresh for you as well.

5. Menethis’ Zombie Apocalypse

Menethis’ Zombie Apocalypse seeks to give you the undead cataclysmic vibe while also being a lightweight modpack. There’s a lot to learn between the much tougher zombies and new systems for both health and food. Other key survival additions include guns, cities, and seasons. New animations and HUD changes ensure this looks much different than other entries on this list. Like a lot of mods on our list of the Best Minecraft Mods of 2023, downloading OptiFine will help out a lot.

4. Zombie Apocalypse – The Zombie Conquest

Zombie Apocalypse – The Zombie Conquest aims to meet its namesake by adding a permadeath mechanic. While you will need to avoid hordes of the bloodthirsty mob and health recovery is limited to specific items, the biggest challenge in this modpack is that death means you have to restart in a brand new world. This might be a simple mod, but it’s easily one of the most difficult.

3. The Last of Us – Zombie Apocalypse

Based on Naughty Dog’s famous survival action series, The Last of Us – Zombie Apocalypse brings their memorable enemies to Minecraft. From Clickers to Shamblers and even the rare Rat King, each infected has their own set of attacks and behavior. Additional mechanics, such as an evolution system for the infected and enemies holding you or breaking down doors, cement this as an intense mod.

2. The Winter Frontier

I highly recommend The Winter Frontier for those who really want a difficult time surviving. What makes this modpack one to look out for are the in-depth systems that it adds. A multi-faceted hunger system is available with mechanics around Diets and Digestion, going hand-in-hand with Thirst and Food decay. Other unique additions include temperature and oxygen systems as well as a progressively increasing difficulty curve. Nothing comes close to feeling as hardcore as this.

1. DeceasedCraft – Modern Zombie Apocalypse

Rounding out this list is another jam-packed Minecraft modpack with DeceasedCraft – Modern Zombie Apocalypse. There are similarities to the entries above such as with systems in place for infections, temperature, and diets. What helps it stand out are the modern city areas, parkour movement, and various guns and vehicles that can be made. A focus on realism when it comes to body health and crafting also culminates in a one-of-a-kind experience.
