What is the Land of Shadow in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

What do we know about the Land of Shadow from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?

The trailer for Elden Ring’s DLC gave us a lot of information. But it also raises a lot of questions about the new location that the content will be set in. Although limited, we learn a bit from the official site about what the Land of Shadow is in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

According to the DLC’s official site, the Land of Shadow is where Marika first set foot. This means that it could’ve been important to the battle between Empyreans trying to win the favor of the Greater Will. It’s also the site of an unsung battle. However, we don’t know if that battle took place while Marika was there or if this refers to Messmer’s habit of cleansing the Tarnished with his flames.

Marika Could’ve Disconnected the Land of Shadow

The Land of Shadow is also said to be in the shadow of the Erdtree. But we reach this location by touching Miquella’s hand to be seemingly transported there. So, it could be possible that this location was once part of the Lands Between but ended up disconnected. In this case, Marika could’ve disconnected the Land of Shadow to a different dimension once she ascended to godhood. It certainly seems like that would be within the scope of her abilities at the time.

So, what sort of realm is the Land of Shadow? We know that it also houses what looks like a great tree. Considering Miquella’s presence and ability to heal the tree, the primary speculation is that it’s a form of the Haligtree. However, it could be an inverted Erdtree or another great tree altogether. While that knowledge will be huge in uncovering the Land of Shadow’s mysteries, it’s unlikely we’ll see information about it prior to the DLC’s full release.

When it comes to what the Land of Shadow is in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, we can make a few good guesses. The information we know sets it as an old location and that at least one large, forgotten battle happened here. Knowing which battle happened and what tree is at the center of this place will be crucial to understanding it. But until we have that knowledge, head to our guide hub for topics like how to get the Jar Cannon or how to beat the Godskin Duo.
