At the beginning of April, Ubisoft announced a period of free trials and free game giveaways to help encourage self-isolation and keep us all sane at home. One month later, Ubisoft is continuing that plan, adding two new games to the list of free titles up for grabs.

The excellent Rayman Legends is still free for now, and Assassin's Creed 2: Deluxe Edition as well as the acclaimed Child of Light are joining the ranks. These are all PC games accessed through Ubisoft's Uplay launcher, and they're free until May 5 at 2 p.m. local time.

Assassin's Creed 2: Deluxe Edition

Assassin's Creed 2 is the start of the fan-favorite Ezio trilogy, featuring Renaissance assassin Ezio Auditore de Firenze. As the "Firenze" in his name suggests, AC2 takes place in Florence, Italy, the heart of the Renaissance in Europe, which means you get to see Leonardo Da Vinci be the Q to Ezio's James Bond.

And while AC2 might not be nearly as free and open as recent offerings like Assassin's Creed Odyssey, it still features some of the best gameplay in the old Assassin's Creed style. Plus it's free, so if you're interested in the upcoming Assassin's Creed Valhalla, you won't lose anything by heading back to the series' origins.

Check it out on Uplay.

Child of Light

Child of Light is a wholly unique RPG, baking fairytale settings and storytelling into every aspect of the game, including combat. It's gorgeous, so much so we actually called it a work of art in our review (which doesn't happen often).

Lovely as it is, it's still a game at its core, and it offers plenty of absorbing RPG gameplay elements like skill trees and turn-based combat to complement the aesthetic. If by some chance you haven't experienced Child of Light yet, now's the time to do it.

You can get it here.

---

While the free game offerings have subsided somewhat recently, there's still plenty of deals to find. PlayStation has two big sales going on, the second Big in Japan sale coinciding with Golden Week and then a games under $20 sale as well, and Xbox Final Fantasy fans can check out most of the modern Final Fantasy titles for a discount.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more video game deals news as it develops.

And there you have our Ubisoft E3 2017 predictions! For all intents and purposes, it seems like it's going to be a pretty great show for the publisher. With several huge games coming in the next year, from South Park to Far Cry, The Crew and Assassin's Creed, there's going to be a lot to show.

\n

As well as the games we know about, Ubisoft is likely to have several unannounced titles that could steal the show, be it Splinter Cell 2, Child of Light 2, or the brand new IP. It's definitely an exciting year and, considering they've chosen for developers to host the briefing, it seems like games are going to be the focus.

\n

What do you think Ubisoft is going to show-off? Which game are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments and be sure to check out our other predictions! Until next time, stay tuned to GameSkinny!

New IP

\n

Ubisoft can't help but close out it's E3 shows with a new IP we've never heard of. The company has done this every year since Watch Dogs was originally revealed, and more often than not it's a pleasant surprise. I expect this year to be no different.

\n

Of course, there's no way of telling what the new IP will be for sure, but we've already gotten a big tease. In a fantastic tongue-in-cheek mission in Watch Dogs 2, players sneak into Ubisoft headquarters and steal a new game trailer, then leak it to a games website for a nice fee. This trailer pops-up online and it shows images like the one above; weird spaceships orbiting planets with the tagline: E3_Conf_Video_v03.

\n

That's as on-the-nose as you can get when it comes to teases. Sources have said the game is indeed real and codenamed "Pioneer", although it was also reported that the game suffered a snag in development. This means the game is not a sure thing to be seen at E3 this year but, given Ubisoft's track record for revealing new IP to close the show, I'd still put money it.

Far Cry 5

\n

Back to serious business, and that business is the awesomely-crazy, Far Cry 5! Just to get something out of the way, I do not understand the so-called "controversy" surrounding the game; it seems some people believe Ubisoft is trying to reflect the Donald Trump supporters in the American Mid-West. A notion that is simply ridiculous.

\n

Far Cry 5 is releasing in the spring of 2018 and it is exciting! The mainline series needed a shake-up after Far Cry 4, and moving to the beautiful plains and mountains of Montana is certainly that. Brandishing Far Cry's signature brand of charismatic cult-leader, black humour, beautiful landscapes, and fanatical action, the new entry in the series is going to be a big deal.

\n

I would expect Far Cry 5 to almost get as much time at Ubisoft's E3 conference as Assassin's Creed, underlining how important the franchise has become to Ubisoft. I also think it could close the show...were it now for one more surprise announcement!

UbiArt

\n

Time for a complete change of pace. UbiArt Framework is a game engine created by Ubisoft to make smaller titles, the likes of which Child of Light and Valiant Hearts emerged!

\n

Those two titles were genuinely fantastic games and a sequel to Child of Light was confirmed by the developer back in 2015! It's been three years since the original title and I wouldn't be shocked if we seen a trailer for the follow-up. Or so I can hope. For what it's worth, a sequel to Valiant Hearts seems less liekly but no less desired.

\n

Moreover, we could very well see a brand new title emerge from the UbiArt Framework engine. Valiant Hearts was the last game made by the engine to release on either PS4 or Xbox One, so we're long past due a new title in the beautiful art style.

Splinter Cell

\n

Here's something that tends to get predicted every year - well since the last instalment in 2013 - but it's bound to happen at some point.

\n

Splinter Cell is one of Ubisoft's best-known franchises, with combined sales of nearly 18 million units! The last game in the series was Blacklist for PS3 and XBox 360 in 2013, and therefore plenty of time has passed for a new title to be almost ready to go. Not to mention, a supposed leak said that Sam Fisher's voice actor, Michael Ironside, had been spotted at Ubisoft Toronto.

\n

In a time when so few stealth games exist, a new Splinter Cell would be a welcome surprise to fans. We'd be very eager to see what a Sam Fisher adventure looks like in 2017 on PS4 and XBox One!

For Honor/Watch Dogs 2/Ghost Recon: Wildlands

\n

Let's keep this one short and sweet. In the past year, Ubisoft has released Watch Dogs 2, For Honor, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. These games have received varying degrees of success but none has set the world on fire.

\n

Regardless, support for all three of these games is unlikely to be concluded. Watch Dogs 2 has received five different DLC packs already but I wouldn't be surprised to see one more story-based DLC pack shown off at the conference. Despite selling even less than the original, the game has gathered a fan base and Ubisoft will want to show them faith.

\n

For Honor and Ghost Recon: Wildlands are a different story however. Despite charting well initially, For Honor only sold 1.72 million copies and it was reported this past week that the game has lost a gigantic 95% of its player base. That's horrendous news for Ubisoft but the company will definitely want to try and recoup those losses with some DLC to get fans back on board. Some decent DLC is probably a last throw of the dice for For Honor.

\n

Ghost Recon: Wildlands on the other hand, sold a little better and has retained a player base. A major expansion for Wildlands just launched, titled "Fallen Ghosts", and has been received well. This makes another expansion for the game this soon unlikely, however I wouldn't be surprised to see a quick trailer for the recent DLC.

The Crew 2

\n

The Crew 2 was announced in an earnings call by Ubisoft, then confirmed on Twitter with the new logo. The game is set to release in the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31 2018 - so we can guarantee a showing at E3.

\n

The Crew released in 2014 to mixed reviews but it did managed to accumulate 10 million registered players, meaning a sequel was fairly inevitable. New features are unknown as of now but it's fair to say that The Crew 2 will have to impress a lot more than its predecessor when it faces competition from the biggest names in the genre: Forza Motorsport 7, Need For Speed: Payback, and Gran Turismo Sport.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

\n

The second South Park game from Ubisoft was revealed two years ago at E3, in what was a fairly unexpected announcement. After suffering two delays, the game is finally ready for release in October.

\n

We've already seen quite a bit from The Fractured But Whole but I fully expect another trailer, or gameplay demonstration from Ubisoft at E3. Due to the game releasing in a couple of months, Ubisoft will wish to keep it in the minds of everyone and get them excited again. If the sequel is anywhere near as good as The Stick of Truth, we'll be in for a treat come Halloween!

Assassin's Creed: Origins

\n

Ubisoft managed to hold the next Assassin's Creed game a secret for longer than usual, but still, the game inevitably leaked before its official announcement. From alleged screenshots to a season pass and even a T-shirt, Assassin's Creed: Origins leaked in some ridiculous ways in the past month.

\n

Ubisoft's E3 briefing will be the first official showing of the game however, and it's fair to say this is the most anticipated Assassin's Creed in a long time. You can blame Unity, glitches, and repetitive gameplay, but the reality is that fans simply became burnt out on the franchise and needed a break. Well, two years later and we're more than ready.

\n

Assassin's Creed: Origins is said to take place in Ancient Egypt and star a new protagonist by the name of Bayek. The game is expected to feature redesigned gameplay, vastly improved visuals, horse-riding, and a massive and seamless open-world. All of this and the game is said to be releasing this fall, fitting the usual reveal-to-release schedule for the series. I could be completely wrong but I can see Ubisoft starting the E3 showcase with Assassin's Creed and just addressing the elephant right away.

"},{"image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/u/b/i/ubisoft-booth-photo-10240-cinema-6400-640x330-9xgx-8e57c.jpg","thumb":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/u/b/i/ubisoft-booth-photo-10240-cinema-6400-640x330-9xgx-8e57c.jpg","type":"slide","id":"161277","description":"

Another year and another Ubisoft E3 briefing is at hand! This year will be a little different however because Aisha Tyler will not be hosting. This probably comes as pleasant news to some but a lot of people, myself included, really liked the personality and skill that Tyler brought to the shows.

\n

Ubisoft has a massive E3 ahead with a lot of exciting new titles coming in the near future. Rather than allow several of it's titles to get leaked, Ubisoft wisely announced a few ahead of time and we'll get to those later in the slideshow. The company has several sequels in the pipeline but each of them has more excitement than usual, not to mention a few surprised we believe may be on the way.

\n

But enough beating around the bush, let's get on with the predictions and, with any luck, we'll get more than a few right.

4 Awesome Platformers That You Had No Idea Existed https://www.gameskinny.com/gcv23/4-awesome-platformers-that-you-had-no-idea-existed https://www.gameskinny.com/gcv23/4-awesome-platformers-that-you-had-no-idea-existed Sun, 30 Oct 2016 12:00:01 -0400 Janette Ceballos

Seeing how so many games come out each year, it's easy for games to fall out of the public eye pretty quickly. For some titles, fading into obscurity is a good thing; they weren't interesting enough to hold an audience's attention or were just plain bad. In other cases, however, good games go unnoticed.

And in the world of platformer games, where a new one seems to be vying for attention every day, it's easy to get lost in the crowd. But there are some truly great platformers in the mix that simply flew under the radar.

Here’s a look at a few of the platformers from the past few years that didn’t get much love, even though they offer some pretty neat features -- from gameplay to story to visuals.

Never Alone

Blending the mythological stories of the Iñupiat people with an atmospheric puzzle-platformer, Never Alone is the story of a young girl named Nuna and her fox as they brave through a frozen landscape to search for the source of an eternal blizzard.

What makes this game stand out is the beautiful visuals inspired by native Alaskan culture. It lets the player experience Iñupiat lore in single-player or multiplayer modes.

Oxenfree

A story-driven thriller of a game, Oxenfree follows Alex as she, her stepbrother Jonas, and a group of teenage friends accidentally open a rift that releases creatures onto the island.

It’s a nice mash-up between 80’s teen and horror movies, as you try to survive the creatures unleashed from the rift and uncover the hidden mysteries of the island. But remember: your decisions matter. The voice acting and sound design help build up the tenseness and unease of this platforming adventure.

Child of Light

This hybrid platformer/RPG offers gorgeous visuals and music to match its empty atmosphere and dire fight sequences.

With an easy to master turn-based attack system, this Ubisoft game sets players as the Princess Aurora -- tasked with recapturing the Sun, Moon, and Stars and saving Lemuria from the Black Queen and her minions.

INK

Taking a break from story-heavy games, INK is a simple concept that is surprisingly fast-paced. You’ll need to bump into walls and jump to throw paint around and reveal your surroundings as you try to survive enemy attacks and reach the end.

Bright colors and a great soundtrack bundled together make for a fun challenge.

These are just a few of the recent platformer games that deserve more attention than they've gotten. Each one packs a lot of great features into a unique gameplay experience, and they're all worth checking out. What other games would you recommend for this list? Let me know in the comments!

Disney Infinity 3.0
\n

by Avalanche Software

\n

While we're on the topic of games combined with collectible toys, it's hard to avoid the Death Star in the room. Disney's Infinity is now in it's third generation with no signs of stopping.

\n

Younger players like the hands-on feel of having, collecting, or even trading figures with friends.

\n

With their recent acquisition of Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics, Disney has added their massive universes to an already massive open world experience.

\n

Players connect the Infinity platform to the X-Box One, then place their characters, which can be used in nearly any combination. Want to have Ironman, Princess Leia and Timon team up? Now, you can make your dream team of heroes and villains.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Kit - MSRP: $39.99

LEGO® Dimensions
\n

A recent trend has been the combination of video games with collectible toys. This would include the original Skylanders, the very popular Disney Infinity series, Nintendo's Amiibo (a-me-bo) and Lego Dimensions.

\n

Additional toys, sold separately, allow new characters and vehicles to be added to games, unlock levels, find secret areas and create new combinations of adventures.

\n

Lego Dimensions adds another facet. Not only are players collecting characters and playing the game, they're actually building or re-building the vehicles and equipment used in the game.

\n

Snap together the Batmobile and place it on the portal stand... viola! The Dark Knight's ride appears in the game for characters to tool around in.

\n

The Starter Set also includes:

\n
    \n
  • LEGO Toy Pad
  • \n
  • Bricks to build the LEGO Gateway
  • \n
  • 3 LEGO minifigures (Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle)
  • \n
  • LEGO Batmobile vehicle
  • \n
\n

Lego's other titles have always been favorites for players of all ages with a variety of worlds to play in like Star Wars, DC Comics, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ghostbusters and most recently Jurassic World.

Child of Light
\n

Saying this UbiSoft game is a side-scrolling platformer and RPG does nothing to describe the experience of leaping into a lush fairy tale painted with a watercolor palette. Each level plays upon light and shadow, as is the game's theme, and looks like a Grimm story brought to life.

\n

Aurora is a princess taken from her home at a time when darkness threatens to consume everything. She sets out to find the moon, the stars and the sun and return the light to stop the Umbra, the Queen of Darkness.

\n

With the help of a firefly named Igniculus, Aurora sets out across mythical realm of Lemuria. Watching Child of Light reminds me of turning pages in some kind of animated storybook. The visuals are layered and stylish but kids who've played other classic platform games should acclimate just fine.

Unravel
\n

Next is a curious and stunningly beautiful platform puzzle-solving game from Coldwood Interactive and Electronic Arts

\n

Yarny is a small fuzzy creature made of yarn. As he moves through the environment, the player can have Yarny use parts of himself to perform tasks, solve puzzles, avoid enemies, and get around obstacles in his path.

\n

Using his strings to build bridges, swing across openings, grab things etc. can deplete Yarny, so players must be careful to keep him going. His mission is gathering memories by earning badges for his successful outings.

Just Dance Disney Party 2
\n

So often parents worry their kids spend too much time on the couch and not enough being physically active. Also, what can kids do to stay active on those rainy or snowy days?

\n

The Just Dance series uses the X-box One Kinect* as players imitate dance moves acted out on the screen. Imagine the old Dance Dance Revolution game, but without a floor pad. Characters on the screen perform to the music and you score by how well you perform the moves and keep up.

\n

Disney Party 2 uses songs from The Disney Channel's most popular kid series and TV movies like:

\n
    \n
  • Austin and Ally
  • \n
  • The Descendants
  • \n
  • Girl Meets World
  • \n
  • Girl vs. Monster
  • \n
  • K.C. Undercover
  • \n
  • Teen Beach 1 and 2

If you have a houseful of dancing fools, there are several Just Dance titles to keep them rocking out new moves.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
\n

PopCap Game's world of Plants vs. Zombies sprouted first as a tower defense game where players tried to protect their Suburbia backyard from invading zombies by raising crazy attack plants to stop them.

\n

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare expanded the wacky battle by creating a three-dimensional world the player could move about in, lay out their yard, plant new creations and fight off zombie invaders.

\n

Garden Warfare 2 now ratchets up the battle another notch as players can play either side and even pilot the zombie's Zmechs, walking tank secret weapons.

\n

While the story is a war between the undead and monstrous plants, the cartoonish action and comic sense of humor makes Garden Warfare 2 a blast to play and numerous play modes keep the challenge coming.

\n

There's over 100 different plants and zombie characters to use in your armies. Team up for 2, 3 or 4 player Co-Op mode or pop online for Player-vs-Player mode with up to 24 competitors.

Rocket League
\n

So, what would playing a giant game of soccer be like if played by rocket-powered cars? Simple premise. Insanely fun.

\n

Based on the PS3 game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars that Psyonix originally published independently, this next-gen version ramps up the thrills with customizable cars, "mutator modes" (to alter gravity, ball size, physics), and plenty of DLC (more cars, various paint jobs, trick tires, and new maps).

\n

The critically-acclaimed, award-winning game has been called "highly addictive", "the right mixture of chaos and precision", and "one of the most entertaining multi-player games of the year (2015)." After huge success on PCs and Playstation 4, Psyonix is adding an X-box One version this summer.*

\n

The basic premise makes Rocket League easy to pick up for younger drivers, but the level of detail means that older kids will be far from bored. Learning how to make precise moves and trick jumps or flips with the cars is an acquired skill. In fact, there is a dedicated Youtube channel where players can show off their driving and goal-making skills.

\n

Split-screen action allows for sibling rivalries as well as online play for more intense competition or a single-player Season Mode that uses computer controlled cars for teammates or opponents.

Trackmania Turbo
\n

Just released in March, Trackmania Turbo by Ubisoft features high-speed action, mind-bending tracks and vivid environments to engage younger racers while it still challenges veteran drivers.

\n

The insanely wild courses reminded me of the Speed Racer movie as your car defies gravity, flips, jumps and hugs impossible turns at high speed.

\n

With over 200 unique racetracks (yes, over 200), the experience won't get old fast. Older kids can create with Track Builder for making new thrills and can even post their finished creations online for others to try.

\n

Family members can challenge each other in head-to-head race events or go online for massive Player-vs-Player Racing. Ubisoft's Double Driver Challenge takes Co-Op play to a whole new level as two players must match move for move to control a single car and keep it on the track.

Minecraft
\n

by Mojang and Microsoft

\n

The first selection is one you may already be familiar with, but still a classic. Though nearly 5 years old, the quintessential sandbox builder game Minecraft continues in popularity. It's simplicity, combined with open-world play and layers of complexity keep millions coming back. It's also sprouted a mobile app and most recently a spin-off, Minecraft: Story Mode.

\n

Online Minecraft has become it's own universe with sites and Youtube channels dedicated to the creations players have made, start up seeds, downloadable outfits, custom bricks, as well as favorite things to do or best places to go in the game, etc.

\n

It's the ability to jump right in as a single-player, co-op or online session that means everyone can experience the game as they want. Take on the challenge of Survival Mode, or tinker in Creative, or just be social on someone's server.

Staring at a wall of game titles in a store or browsing page after page online can be daunting when trying to find an age-appropriate but fun X-Box One game for younger players.

\n

Though a gamer and a pirate amazon, I'm a parent first. So, I understand the struggle of knowing what's okay for kids to play that's not too intense, too scary or too mature for their game time--especially since many X-Box One popular titles are shoot'em ups, fighting games or horror.

\n

Here's some of the most popular E Rated and E-10 Rated games out there. E Rated meaning a game is suitable for Everyone; no naughty language, over the top violence, or graphically frightening images. The E-10 rating is meant for older kids and normally means there might be a crude joke or two (like fart humor) and the action might be a little more intense.

\n

Some of the titles have been around a little while, but you just may have not seen them. A few are fairly new and might be good upcoming gift ideas.

\n

Prices listed are the everyday prices averaged from several gaming stores, big box stores and online shopping. Some comparisons can find the best deals.

So, that’s it, the most beautiful games of 2015. I know the year’s not over yet, but we’re unlikely to see any of the games released in the remaining weeks of December challenge those on this list.

\n

As the saying goes, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” so not everyone may agree with my number one, but I’ve personally never played a game that made my jaw drop in awe the way that The Witcher 3 does. So thank you, CD Projekt RED, for showing that truly beautiful art is possible in video games – and so is having sex on a stuffed unicorn.

"},{"image":"http://s3.amazonaws.com/gameskinnyop/a/6/e/a6e1afbfe91054c8ab5395e5f5786b36.jpg","thumb":"http://s3.amazonaws.com/gameskinnyop/a/6/e/tiny_a6e1afbfe91054c8ab5395e5f5786b36.jpg","type":"slide","id":"94797","description":"

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

\n

I don’t mind admitting that there were moments during the Witcher 3 that were so beautiful it almost brought a tear to my eye. Staring at the mountains over the lake at Kaer Morhen, watching the birds on the horizon as the sun comes up over Novigrad docks, standing on the bridge to Kaer Trolde with the snowy peaks of Ard Skellig in the distance – all moments that made me understand why some people get emotional when looking at world-famous paintings.

\n

There may have been other games released this year that are more photo-realistic, and there may even have been 2015 titles that do textures better, but the Witcher 3 manages to combine so many top-quality graphical elements that it actually makes you want to be in Geralt’s world – even with all the monsters and murderers.

\n

The lushness of the forests, the quality of the water and fire, the snow on the mountains, the birds, the weather, the sunrises, the creatures, the landscapes – I could go on and on. If anyone tells you that video games aren’t art, show them this. If I could somehow show my 10-year-old self the Witcher 3, I have no doubt that this young version of me would want to hop in a cryo-chamber and stay there until its release.

\n

There have been some breathtakingly gorgeous games in 2015, but in my opinion none can match the Witcher 3. A stunning piece of work and my game of the year.

2. Rise of the Tomb Raider

\n

Last month saw the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the sequel to the 2013 reboot of the franchise and a game that manages to capture the magic of those original Lara Croft titles from so many years ago.

\n

Not only is Rise of the Tomb Raider an excellent action-adventure game, but it looks stunning. Mostly taking place in the snowy landscapes of Siberia, the environments really are amazing. Snow and water are never easy to recreate in games, but the designers replicate it here brilliantly.

\n

Sadly, despite the critical and commercial praise it received, Rise of the Tomb Raider never got the attention it deserved upon launch. And why is that, you may ask? Becuase it was released on the same day as Fallout 4! As Comic Book Guy would say: “WORST. DECISION. EVER.”

3. Everybody’s gone to the rapture

\n

Everybody’s gone to the rapture is one of those games that seems to polarize opinion: a lot of people, especially critics, love it, but there are plenty of gamers who hate it and reiterate the old “walking simulators aren’t games” argument. But no matter what your thoughts are on The Chinese Room’s English-set mystery, it’s impossible to deny that it looks amazing.

\n

If you’ve ever played the similar The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, then you’ll know what to expect: plenty of stunning scenery, lots of time to admire it, and tons of walking. The small, Shropshire-based town the game is set in is brought to life thanks to the gorgeous, highly detailed graphics. Atmosphere is crucial in a game like this, and EGTTR doesn’t disappoint – you can almost feel the sun on your face and smell the English countryside (which doesn’t always smell great, just btw).

\n

Everybody’s gone to the rapture is so beautiful you’d think you could reach into the screen and touch it. Plus, it’s a damn fine game.

"},{"image":"http://s3.amazonaws.com/gameskinnyop/f/c/d/fcd5c6ec84dbbd77be761acb655c4f07.jpg","thumb":"http://s3.amazonaws.com/gameskinnyop/f/c/d/tiny_fcd5c6ec84dbbd77be761acb655c4f07.jpg","type":"slide","id":"94478","description":"

4. The Order: 1886

\n

Now we get to one of those games whose gameplay doesn’t come close to matching its frankly astounding graphics and fantastic atmosphere. The Order 1886 makes you feel like you’re controlling a live-action movie with its lifelike visuals. Unfortunately, it’s one of those movies where, most of the time, not much is happening.

\n

It’s not that The Order is a terrible game, it just should have been so much better. The huge number of quick-time events and restrictive gameplay can make it feel like a long cutscene. Overall, it just isn’t much fun.

\n

Like a narcissistic Instagram girl, the game knows it’s beautiful and wants you to realize this. There are plenty of moments where the action takes a backseat so players can marvel at the details and high-quality textures of the game’s objects. You can almost hear The Order: 1886 screaming “Ignore my many faults! Look at how beautiful I am!” as it takes yet another selfie.

5. Ori and the Blind Forest

\n

Not every game that’s considered to be beautiful has to feature almost photo-quality graphics; a good example of this is Ori and the Blind Forest, a 2D platformer that uses vibrant, stunning colors to make it pop off the screen.

\n

The multiple layers of Ori’s levels add an extra element to the visuals, giving the game that sense of depth, rather than it looking like a flat cartoon. During some sections, this layering is used to great effect - especially with the rising water. And trust me when I say: there are some scenes so fantastical, you’ll feel like you're inside a real fairytale.

\n

Ori and the Blind Forest is a brilliant, emotional game that’s made even better with its luscious graphics and a memorable musical score. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

6. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

\n

The thing with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is that it’s such a good game to play, many people are oblivious to how pretty it is. What looks to be Hideo Kojima's swansong for Konami is up there with Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 as a contender for Game of The Year. Not only does it redefine the concept of what’s possible in an open-world game, but it also looks fantastic.

\n

The two main locations of Afghanistan and Zaire are loving recreated in MGSV and Big Boss’ offshore headquarters, Mother Base, is a thing of beauty – made all the prettier thanks to the surrounding crystal blue waters of the Seychelles.

\n

The many cinematic sections look like they’ve been taken straight out of a movie, the character and animal animations are spot-on, and the weather effects are outstanding. Metal Gear Solid V is as attractive as it is fun.

7. Child of Light

\n

Child of Light is a magnificent RPG/2D adventure-platformer hybrid whose visuals are truly lovely. Every little bit of this game looks hand-painted by a master artist for a children’s book. It has the same graphics engine as the recent Rayman titles and its use of light and shade - something that I generally never even notice in games - adds so much atmosphere to Child of Light.

\n

Some of the most visually impressive moments in the game come when you’re interacting with Child of Light’s many gigantic creatures, who can take up the majority of the screen. Each level’s background resembles an interactive art gallery painting, and the characters are fantastically designed without feeling childish. The aesthetics of this game will give you a warm and fuzzy sensation, often inducing feelings of childhood nostalgia (they did in me, anyway).

\n

Child of Light is unlike most games; it’s artistic without being pretentious, child-like without being patronizing, and emotional without being saccharine. A gorgeous, incredible, magical game, and also available at a very low price. I highly recommend it to all RPG fans.

It’s common knowledge that just because a game has beautiful graphics, it doesn’t mean that it’ll be any good. Some titles look breathtaking but are, for want of a better word, a bit shit. On the other side of the coin, you have games that look like they were made twenty years ago yet are utterly brilliant, such as Minecraft, Spelunky and Super Meat Boy. Of course, there occasionally are those titles that manage to combine looks and gameplay into one perfect game, which make up the majority of this list.

\n

Every new year brings advancements in game engine technology, graphics card drivers (for PCs) and game optimization, meaning 2015 saw some truly beautiful titles. Not all of them were brilliant to play, and some were downright balls, but there’s no denying that we’re reaching a point where graphics in video games are hitting almost photo-realistic levels.

\n

So here we have been the seven prettiest, most beautiful games of 2015. Yet more proof that we’ll soon never want to leave our homes, living out our lives as a virtual avatar in a picturesque world while a robot butler feeds us and our chairs double as toilets. Maybe... hopefully.

And there you have it, the highest-rated Xbox One games on the market. From Ori and the Blind Forest to Titanfall, and everything in between, the Xbox One is clearly a pretty great place to play games with something for everyone.

\n

It will be very interesting to see if this list changes any in the coming months, what with Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza Motorsport 6, and Fable Legends, not to mention third-party games like Fallout 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Mad Max, all coming out before Christmas. This list could look very different in a year's time and lets hope it does!

1. The Witcher 3 - 91%
\n

And no surprise here, we have CD Projeckt Red's RPG masterpiece, The Witcher 3. We also recently published The 15 Highest Rated PS4 Games, and The Witcher 3 was also atop that list. So it's fairly undeniable that Geralt's final journey is the best game on current-gen platforms.

\n

With a gigantic open world that demands to be explored in the greatest depth, a myriad of side-quests that are as long and interesting as many games' whole stories, a fantastic cast of characters to meet along the way, graphics that have to be seen to be believed, and a great story to cap off the trilogy, The Witcher 3 is quite possibly the best RPG ever made.

\n
\n

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a thoughtful, diverse, and frequently awe-inspiring adventure. Its stories are deep and satisfying, unafraid to touch on themes of personal character, presenting players with choices and consequences that aren’t about turning into a hero or a villain. In the end, it’s quite simply one of the best RPGs ever made."

2. Fifa 14 - 88%
\n

The second entry in the Fifa series to make it on to this list, but rather surprisingly it is the older, 2014 edition that sneaks into 2nd place. Even though Fifa games supposedly get better with each iteration, a belief I too have held, critics disagreed and rank the Xbox One debut game as the best out there.

3. Ori and the Blind Forest - 88%
\n

And here we have the second, and last, Xbox One exclusive on the list. Ori and the Blind Forest is emotional story-telling at its absolute finest and a truly awe-inspiring, albeit challenging, journey through a beautifil world.

\n

Ori and the Blind Forest is a MetroidVania game with RPG elements, not so dissimilar to Child of Light, but it is also a deceptively tricky platformer underneath a charming and very pretty art-style. As its debut game, you can expect Moon Studios to be a major player for Xbox One going forward.

4. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor - 87%
\n

Undoubtedly one of the surprise hits of last year, Shadow of Mordor was an excellent game with innovative features, not to mention thousands of Orcs to kill.

\n

With a great open-world and the awesome Nemesis system, which creates rivalries between you and Orcs as well as a genuine power struggle, Shadow of Mordor wasn't the simple Lord of the Rings spin-off everyone expected. The gameplay was a mix of Batman and Assassin's Creed, the world was fittingly barren and bleak, the story simple but effective. The overall package was something special. A sequel is guaranteed!

6. Forza Horizon 2 - 86%
\n

Playground Games have worked year after year to make the Forza series a worthy competitor to Gran Turismo. Even though the two series have markedly different styles, one being arcadey and the other a sim, Forza has definitely become the top racing game on the market.

\n

Yearly installments allow the developer to make the series better with every iteration, while dominating public mindshare. But it isn't just consistency that makes Forza great, it's the graphics and the gameplay. Forza Horizon 2 exemplifies this with its open-world gameplay, dynamic weather, day and night cycles, and a huge range of cars to choose from.

7. Mortal Kombat X - 86%
\n

NetherRealm Studios' ultra-violent fighting game made a resounding debut on Xbox One. Mortal Kombat X was every bit as gross, competitive, and fun as we hoped it would be.

After a few failed experiments from the PS2 generation, NetherRealm has really found what makes Mortal Kombat great and are doing it with the utmost style. 8. Titanfall - 86%

As one of only two Xbox One exclusives on this list, Titanfall stands high as the consoles highest rated AAA game to date! It may surprise you, considering few talk about the game anymore, but Titanfall was incredibly well-received when it was released.

Titanfall is an incredibly tight FPS multiplayer game that lets you play as wall-running soldiers, or huge mechanical Titans. 10. Dragon Age: Inquisition - 85%
\n

Rising from the ashes of a series that seemed doomed to be abandoned, Inquisition became the amazing RPG we always wanted from the Dragon Age series. With a huge, sprawling world that changes as you play, fantastically detailed graphics, and a great cast of characters, Inquisition became the benchmarks for RPG games on Xbox One.

11. Batman: Arkham Knight - 85%

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions blends together everything players loved about previous games in the series, and new elements that fit like a glove. Online co-op and leaderboards are definitely the best additions to the series that make this game much more tense and exciting than it ever was playing against the AI.

13. Child of Light - 82%
\n

As one of the most beautiful, elegant and memorable RPGs in recent memory, it's no surprise Child of Light features on this list. It might not be a 100+ hour RPG like every other that comes out nowadays, but Child of Light is exactly what it needs to be. It's a 2D side-scrolling RPG with elements of MetroidVania. It's RPG-lite and very accessible, but nonetheless memorable and polished.

The turn-based gameplay is incredibly well thought out. It plays simple enough for those not accustomed to the style, and is nuanced enough for those who do. 15. Fifa 15 - 82%
\n

We begin our list with an EA Sports staple and the best football/soccer series ever to hit consoles. Coincidentally at number fifteen on the list, Fifa 15 is the second in the series to make it to current-gen consoles, and the little tweaks made the beautiful game even better.

It was little over 2 years ago when Microsoft walked out of its worst ever E3 press conference. Little more than a week later it reversed all of its Xbox One policies over DRM, online connectivity and game sharing. Trials and Tribulations of Translations: An Interview with Tiago Kern of Synthesis https://www.gameskinny.com/bi02l/trials-and-tribulations-of-translations-an-interview-with-tiago-kern-of-synthesis https://www.gameskinny.com/bi02l/trials-and-tribulations-of-translations-an-interview-with-tiago-kern-of-synthesis Fri, 26 Jun 2015 15:30:01 -0400 OrganisedDinosaur

We often forget that many of our favorite games were developed by foreign studios and scripted in languages other than English. Non-English speakers, however, are far more aware of the work that goes into bringing a game to them from abroad. Translations are a crucial, but not well-understood, aspect of game development. Synthesis is a worldwide group with offices in a dozen countries that focuses on video games localisation.

Tiago Kern, a native Brazilian with a journalism degree and fluency in English, works in the Brazilian office - mainly as a proof-reader and sometimes translator for Synthesis. He sat down with me to discuss this vital aspect of game design.

GS: So how and why did you get into translating, and video game translating in particular?

TK: I've been studying English since I was a child, as my father used to be an English teacher in his youth. I've always liked reading books and playing video games, and - especially with games - we never got the translation for many games in Brazil. In fact, I think I learned a lot of my English just from playing video games in English as I grew up.

I started working with translation informally. I'd offer translation services in the ads of a local newspaper, and that got me my first job as a translator for an Intellectual Property company. I made the move to video game translating some time later when a friend of mine mentioned my name when his teacher asked if he knew someone who played lots of video games and was proficient in English. This teacher must have given my contact information to Synthesis, as I was contacted by them some months later when they were starting to set up their Brazilian team. I had to take tests devised by the company and go through a training phase, and now I've been working for them for almost four years.

Synthesis localizes numerous games for the Brazilian community

GS: What games did you play growing up and what is your overall gaming background prior to translating?

TK: My father got me an Atari system in my early childhood, and from then on I kept playing: I had a NES, then a Mega Drive (Genesis), then a PS1 and so on. I was very fond of the Sonic the Hedgehog games when I was little, but I truly fell in love with video game narratives with Chrono Cross and Legend of Legaia in the PS1. Everyone mentions the Final Fantasy games on the SNES and PS1 as their "gateway" JRPGs, but the first Final Fantasy I completed front to back was actually Final Fantasy X, so I guess I jumped on the bandwagon a little too late.

GS: So first of all just talk me through the basic process of translating a game.

TK: Well, it really depends on the client you're dealing with. We usually receive chunks of text from the game and translate it gradually - as sometimes the full scripts are not even completely written by the time a game's localization process begins. There are usually separate files for the dialogues and script, the menus, the button prompts and everything else. The client usually sends us reference files for us to check and study in order to translate the game, but it's never enough, and the effort that the client puts in to answering our questions (whether they have a fulltime Q&A team or not) is a giant factor for the overall quality of a game's translation.

Once the text that needs to be recorded is fully translated, it is sent to a studio and recorded with Brazilian voice actors. If they make changes to the text during the recording sessions, we are notified and then implement the changes into the game's text (usually this happens due to time constraint and/or lip sync for character lines).

GS: How much freedom do you have when making a translation? Can you make changes that you deem necessary or must you stick to direct translations?

TK: Video game localization infers that you will need to adapt the game to your language and to your country's gaming public. Our goal is to translate the text to the best of our abilities, trying to convey the original message to the Brazilian players, but some things change during the course of localization.

For instance: if there is an acronym in the original game and there's no way we can use the same acronym for a translation in Brazilian Portuguese that retains the same idea, we may change the acronym in the translated game - provided the client says it's fine, of course. The same goes for puns and jokes: some things are impossible to carry over, as English puns will simply not work in Portuguese, so we must come up with a solution - a pun of our own, or an adaptation of the original text with new ideas that will work for Brazilian Portuguese.

Certain things like puns simply can't be translated

GS: I notice that you refer to the work as localizing the game rather than simply translating it. Do cultural differences between Brazil and the game's country of origin ever effect your work?

TK: Not really... During the process of translation for Valiant Hearts, the other languages could offer some real input on their countries' role during WWII, but Brazil remained neutral throughout all of this, only siding with the Allies at the end of the war, so in this particular game we noticed how we have a different background to the other languages in Europe.

What has happened more than once actually which showcases the view of foreigners of Brazil is this: we've been asked to translate games into "Neutral Portuguese", so that it would be a translation for both Brazil and Portugal. But, as it happens, European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese are completely distinct from each other: from spelling to sentence construction and other aspects.

GS: So if not the cultural changes, what are the biggest challenges that the translation/localization team is faced with?

...people aiming to work with video games localization should not only be translators but also gamers.

I guess the biggest challenge for a video games translator is to find a solution for tricky scenarios, where the original text is confusing or when it lacks context. Sometimes the same word may be used for six different things in English, so it has six different possible translations in Portuguese, and we get only this word and nothing else to go on. That's one of the reasons why people aiming to work with video game localization should not only be translators but also gamers - if you do not play games, you won't know how some terms are employed within games and will assume they refer to something else.

It's true. Imagine what could have happened to Batman

GS: So context or lack thereof is probably the biggest challenge the team faces. To what extent do you collaborate with the original writers to combat this?

TK: There isn't much in the way of the localization team collaborating with the original writers, as the writing process of a game is usually finished before we receive the text to localize. However, the final product of a localized game is certainly the sum of a collaborative work: some clients actually go as far as working with the development team in order to add new text to the game as a way of dealing with localized languages' particular aspects: for instance, if the game allows for character creation, sometimes the game developers will be able to create separate lines that are spoken to or by the male or female characters.

This usually isn't a huge deal in English, but in Latin languages like Portuguese, it is very hard to localize a game where the player can choose to play as a male or female character, since our adjectives will mostly have gender indications. So if the game developers allow for this kind of variation in the localized languages, a female warrior will be guerreira (instead of guerreiro) in Brazilian Portuguese, but if the localisation team has no support from the development team in a game like this, we'd need to go with a neutral term in Portuguese, such as combatente.

GS: What are the biggest project you have worked on and what work are you the most proud of?

I think the projects I'm most proud of are The Witcher III and Child of Light.

TK: Depends on what you'd call "big". I've worked on several projects, some of which I can't even discuss, but I've worked on Ubisoft's Far Cry 3 and CD Projekt RED's The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, which were definitely big games. I think the projects I'm most proud of are The Witcher III and Child of Light. Child of Light was particularly tricky as the original text was comprised of poems that rhymed, so the translation process for this one was a real challenge.

GS: You worked on the Witcher III from the English text? So the Portuguese has gone through two filters. How does that affect the finished game? Did you consult the Polish original as well?

TK: I worked as a proofreader for The Witcher III, but yeah, we translated the text directly from the English. In the translation files we were given, you could see the English text as well as the original Polish, so if you knew a bit of Polish I guess you could consult the original text - but I doubt anyone from our local translation team in Brazil would speak Polish. I did have the original text translated online once or twice out of curiosity. I've read the three books from The Witcher that were translated from Polish into Brazilian Portuguese (by Tomasz Barcinski), since the books were taken as the main reference we had for the project. That being said, some of the names in the game were changed, as the English version used some different names for characters: for instance, "Dandelion" is "Jaskier" in Polish and in the books, but we used "Dandelion" in the games, just like English.

GS: You mentioned working on Child of Light and its rhyming structure. I have often wondered how things like Shakespeare can be translated. How on earth can you keep both the meaning and the rhyme when localizing the game?

TK: We were told to keep the rhymes as long as it didn’t sacrifice the meaning. We also had length contraints for each line, so it was quite hard to localize this particular game. Sometimes we forgot about the rhymes yes, but I tried to rhyme as much as possible in-game. There are probably very few verses where there are no rhymes in the Brazilian version.

Poetry is particularly difficult to translate

GS: English speakers often forget that translators are even a part of game development. We forget that any Nintendo game we ever play was actually translated from Japanese! How do you think the experience of playing a game is effected by playing it in its non-original language?

TK: I think playing a game in its non-original language is great provided that there was genuine effort in the localization process. Video game localization is kind of a weird thing still: with movies, you get to read the script and sometimes watch the movie, and then translate the dialogue and subtitles; with books, you have the whole thing right there, there are no accompanying visuals; but with games, it all depends on the interaction between the client and the localization company, and on the familiarity that the translation team has with the game's genre and mechanics. Sometimes you get amazing localized versions of games, and sometimes "you must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance..."

GS: "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance!” Any funny stories about mistranslations or anything like that which made it into a game you worked on?

The original text read "Pull the trigger" and the translator inserted a typo in Portuguese so that it read "Aperte o gatinho" ("Pull the kitten").

TK: I've heard stories about terms that have been translated erroneously in games to great comedic effect, but no particular one I can think of right now. However, I do remember that once I was proofreading a batch for a game where the original text read "Pull the trigger" and the translator inserted a typo in Portuguese so that it read "Aperte o gatinho" ("Pull the kitten"). Of course I laughed when I read that, but ultimately I corrected the text.

GS: Do you play the games you translate?

TK: It depends on the game. I'd like to play them all, sure, but most of the time you don't get a free copy of the game you've worked on - although that does happen every now and then. Of course, I'd play the games if they appeal to me. I've played many games where I was part of the localization team. I have not played The Witcher III yet (I ordered it already, but it didn't arrive yet), but I put a lot of effort into this game, so I can't wait to finally play it and see the final results.

Need an excuse to play The Witcher III again? Check out Synthesis' work

GS: Any advice for bi-lingualists out there who might want to get into your line of work?

TK: I find that usually people who wish to work in the localization process for video games are either amazing gamers who know little English or make a lot of mistakes in Brazilian Portuguese... or the other way around: people who speak English perfectly and know how to deal with Brazilian Portuguese grammar and adaptation but who rarely actually sit down and play games.

I think the best advice to hone your translation skills for video game translation is to actually play games both in the original language and in the localized languages: check how they dealt with each issue, see if you can find translation mistakes, pay attention to how text is displayed in the game and what solutions they found for challenging situations. Play games from different genres and see how the tone changes in the language: some games have extremely informal language, others keep their text safe from curse words and slangs.

And finally, take part in localization events, such as LocJam, since that helps a bunch - it helps you get to know people who work in the industry while at the same time you discuss the process of localization, its challenges and practices.

A huge thank you to Tiago Kern and Synthesis for facilitating the interview. How many of you out there have ever played the same game in more than one language? How aware are you when you play a game that has been translated for you? Comment below to ask Tiago any other questions you may have.

Ubisoft Teases a New Child of Light Game https://www.gameskinny.com/9uagz/ubisoft-teases-a-new-child-of-light-game https://www.gameskinny.com/9uagz/ubisoft-teases-a-new-child-of-light-game Tue, 14 Apr 2015 09:43:54 -0400 Curtis Dillon

Creative Director at Ubisoft Montreal, Patrick Plourde, has teased a new Child of Light game via Twitter.

"Fans of Child of Light: There are very cool projects in process set in the Child of Light universe," said Plourde. He went on to say more news will be revealed soon.

The term "universe" implies that any new games are unlikely to be direct sequels to the original Child of Light but that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who played the game - considering how finite the story was.

Child of Light is a 2D, platforming RPG with a beautiful art style. The game follows the story of Aurora, a little girl who must battle her way through the otherworld to restore the sun, moon and stars to save her father.

Plourde worked on the original game with a very small team and last year commented that it had made "enough" money to warrant a sequel.

Stay tuned for more Child of Light news.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (PC)

\n

Developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. I am not a huge fan of card games, probably because I am awful at strategic thinking. Since Hearthstone is free to play, I figured I had nothing to lose when getting this game, and I was right.

\n

Hearthstone is the most fun I have ever had while playing a card game. I really enjoy the medieval pub vibe that is lathered on the game. The enemy AI is fun to play against, but playing against another player is by far the best part. I’m not one to recommend PVP games because I hate competition, but if you ever want to get into a card game then Hearthstone is your best bet. I just wish they had Death Knights as a playable class!

This year in gaming has been a bit of a let down for me, with numerous delays until 2015 and a handful of extremely disappointing games. 2014 has not been the strongest in recent years for video games, but there have been a few really good gems to have come out this year. I am excluding PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One games from this list due to the fact that I do not yet own a new-gen console, and it wouldn't be fair to list games that I have not had the pleasure of playing.

Why Aren't More of Ubisoft's Games "Packed to the Gills" with Women? https://www.gameskinny.com/xnrum/why-arent-more-of-ubisofts-games-packed-to-the-gills-with-women https://www.gameskinny.com/xnrum/why-arent-more-of-ubisofts-games-packed-to-the-gills-with-women Wed, 30 Jul 2014 14:30:32 -0400 Simon Costelloe

The name Ubisoft can often leave a bad taste in many a gamer’s mouth due to certain policies and stances, such as their clunky PC game client Uplay which imposes strict DRM rules that prevented many gamers from even playing the Watch_Dogs single-player campaign once it was released. Others are opposed to how the publisher went about striking the videos of YouTubers such as “Alchestbreach” who found that Ubisoft did not want him playing Far Cry 3 and advertising it to his hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

While all of this may be true, one thing I believe they deserve credit for is their ability to create interesting, flawed and complex characters… most of the time anyway.

Some of Ubisoft’s star games contain awesome examples of enigmatic (and terrifying) characters

Characters like the delightfully insane Vaas from Far Cry 3 or the cool Jordy Chin from Watch_Dogs. This is something I hope they continue, but I am troubled by the fact that oftentimes women in their AAA game franchises are  under-utilized, or only used as plot devices until they are either killed off or betray the main character in some way in order to motivate him to complete his story.

Ubisoft has recently been hit with criticisms about their inclusion of female characters

This outcry from from the unstoppable army of 'the Internet,' lead to Far Cry 4 director Alex Hutchinson saying that his game is “packed to the gills with women.” And just the other day Ubisoft treated us to a very beautiful cinematic trailer for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Unity and within this trailer we were introduced to the (presumably) Templar “Elise.” I can’t help but feel that her creation was a bit of an afterthought - that she may only exist as a love interest to Arno and that she will not be a fully fleshed out and interesting character.

Many of you will no doubt also know about the upcoming story-centric DLC for Watch Dogs focused on T-Bone who is the hairier, more homeless version of Aiden Pearce. When I first heard about this it didn't bother me... but I then played Watch Dogs and met Clara Lille.

Why, oh why can we not play as her?

I will avoid spoiling the game in any way but let me say that you will come to find out that that Clara has many layers to her and that she has done a lot of bad things in order to survive. Playing as this conflicted character tickles my gaming taste buds so much more than playing as T-Bone who simply wants revenge and to blow things up. Playing as Clara would also possibly fulfill the promise of E3 2011. Since Clara is not a physical threat, and presumably has no training in heavy weaponry like the one-man army Aiden Pearce, she would have to rely more on stealth and hacking and could only carry a pistol or a sub-machine gun.

However not all of Ubisoft’s games are testosterone fueled rampages

I have faith in Ubisoft. They can change, and I will wait patiently for their RPG based on the life of Aisha Tyler.

Some of their games feature women as the main protagonist, like Aveline in Assassin’s Creed: Liberation and Aurora in the beautiful Child of Light which I am currently playing on my PS Vita. Something to note here though is that these games appeal to a much smaller audience due to their platform or their alternative art style that would turn many gamers away.

Nevertheless I have faith in Ubisoft. They can change, and I will wait patiently for their RPG based on the life of Aisha Tyler.

What do you think? Does Ubisoft even need to change? Which characters would you like to play as in some of their flagship franchises?

Why Aren't You Playing Child of Light? https://www.gameskinny.com/sei19/why-arent-you-playing-child-of-light https://www.gameskinny.com/sei19/why-arent-you-playing-child-of-light Mon, 07 Jul 2014 04:23:58 -0400 Nathan Staples

Coming out of left-field for a big-budget gaming company like Ubisoft, Child of Light was highlighted by many for it's beautiful art direction and use of the UbiArt framework seen in the recent Rayman games. But many might have bypassed it as simply a pretty game, it's strong RPG sensibilities elevates it to one of the best downloadable games so far this year.

Child of Light is beautiful to look at.

You play as Aurora, a young Austrian girl who has taken ill, she falls to sleep and awakens in the mythical land of Lemuria. She is told that Lemuria's sun, moon, and stars have been stolen by the Dark Queen Umbra and that she needs to return them so that she can be reunited with her father, the Duke. Along the way she meets a variety of different supporting characters including the firefly Igniculus, who helps light the way in this dark world.

The first thing you notice, as you might have expected, is the excellent art design that looks incredible on new generation consoles and PC. It's got a wonderful watercolour effect, Aurora's hair flows in every scene and the art design just really draws you in before you even start playing the game.

The timeline adds a fun dimension to combat.

So on to gameplay which is split into two sections, roaming and battling. In the roaming parts, you explore the map as you look for secrets, enemies, puzzles, and items to help advance through the game. You are given the ability to fly relatively early on, allowing you to skip battles and travel between sections at a much faster rate. Battles, initiated when you walk into an enemy or triggered automatically in boss fights, it is essentially a turn-based battle system with a little twist.

There is a progress bar at the bottom split into two, two thirds for waiting to cast and the final third for casting. When either you, your supporting character, or the opponent reaches the start of the casting section, you choose a move and at the end of that section it is performed. However, if you manage to hit someone before they manage to cast whilst in that casting zone, they are bumped back in the timeline. It's a great little mechanic that has several little nuances to it, like using Igniculus' light to slow down your opponents or heal your characters.

Added to that are the different weaknesses of enemies, the different casting speeds that help with interruptions and different status affect that can affect strength, defence, speed or even paralyse an opponent. The system has been refined in such a way that it works fluently; it's very simple for someone to quickly understand and they add some great complications in boss battles with penalties for interrupting them.

The support characters all add something different to the game, with physical attackers, magic specialists, support characters or ones that aim to hinder the opponent. Leveling up is consistent, using skill trees is easy and it allows players to plan what they want each character to contribute to the team. Not only that, the Oculus system of collecting and crafting new stones that add different bonuses to your attack, defence, and a timeline bonus.

It has such a great deal of depth and experimentation that just makes combat such a joy to play. Whilst some will want to avoid consistently battling, I was finding myself looking for enemies to defeat because it was such a well-built and fun part of the game. The story was also stronger than I had anticipated, which even got better over time and something like that added to the great design and gameplay just makes the experience of playing Child of Light so worthwhile.

It's not quite perfect and it's not for everyone.

It does have some drawbacks, there isn't a great deal of enemy variety and when they do, they just change the colour palette just to distinguish it as being a different elemental type which is a disappointment. There isn't a great amount of challenge due to the switching out system, you never feel overwhelmed and with the abundance of items you'll only have someone faint when you aren't paying attention to their health.

The biggest issue the game has isn't anything to with its design, more that some people just don't like playing the turn-based battle system. The timeline keeps it fresh in Child of Light and that might change some people's minds but not everyone's so if you feel that you'd dislike it because of that then don't go for it simply because it's been highly recommended everywhere else.

But, if you do love turn-based battling, you will thoroughly enjoy his game. It's smart, beautiful, and it really draws you in from the first minute to the last. It's available now on PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, and on Steam for around £12 in the UK, an absolute bargain for 10 hours of a really solid game.

Are you stuck clearing out of the cellar in Bolmus Populi? Killed everything in sight but the game keeps warning you as you leave that there are still things alive down there?

You're in good company. This very thing happened on my playthrough, as well as to several other readers.

"cannot find the damn rats in the cellar! Does anyone know how to pass this quest?"

"I have gone through it a dozen times and Ocullus keeps telling me there are more creatures to kill, but I cannot find them."

Where to Find the Last Enemy in the Cellar

Yup. There is, in fact, one last %&$^ fire wraith still hiding in the cellar.

Don't bother looking for run of the mill rodents, our rat friend may have vaguely referred to his infested cellar like it was full of run of the mill vermin, but rest assured he knew he was sending a child down there to battle fiery netherworld monsters. Kindhearted gent, eh?

Long story short, it's hiding in a chest. If you haven't opened the chest, you haven't beaten the monster and thus the quest won't complete. LP_5091 has more details on the chest location, if you're having trouble finding it.

"They're in a chest just by the foot of the diagonal shaft with all the traps. Finally got it!"

Where to Get the Lost Lights Quest

In the Cynbel Sea, on the first screen upon entering fly (swim?) as fat left and as high up as you can, and you'll find a lost elemental. He wants to go home, but needs help to get there. He and Igniculus summon his elemental friends, but they are scattered around Lemuria. Surprise, surprise - he wants you to do the legwork and find them!

Each elemental will be hanging out at the sign / shrine's you've likely been noticing since way back in the Mahthildis Forest. At each, you'll now encounter an elemental. Speak to them and they'll head for our tired glowy friend in the sea. Here's where they are:

2 in the Forest

Mahthildis Forest: One near the sign in the Tree of Thorns in Mahthildis Forest.

The Old Monastery: One at the sign just outside the exit to the monastery - fly down and left after exiting.

2 in the Plains

Windwheels: The fastest way to reach the sign in the Windwheels is to fast travel to Bolmus Populi. Just outside the town of Bolmus Populi past the smoking girl you'll find the sign.

Bolmus Populi: Go to the entrance of the Moon Temple, then fly straight down past two fire reapers and to the right. Expect some left wind gusts to contend with. (Thanks TheWhistlerr!)

2 at Sea

Cynbel Sea: If this one were any closer to the quest giver, they'd be holding hands. He's in the same cavern, fly left and down from the Elemental quest giver, to the sign.

Piscean Village: One just outside the Piscean Village on the right as you move to enter the Cynbel Sea.

Redeeming the Lost Lights Quest

Head back to the Elemental in the Cynbel Sea for a short interaction and your reward.

The "Right Way" to Complete The Cynbel Secret Quest

Follow the signs

Look for the large Emerald green crystals in the Cynbel sea palace. When you find them, illuminate them with Ignatious using LT and follow the direction of the arrow to your next crystal. Eventually by following the directions you'll find the treasure, and along the way you'll be rewarded with lots of smaller chests.

Not interested in following the path? Read on.

The Fast Way to Complete the Cynbel's Secret Quest

Just head straight to the final location of Cynbel's Secret

If you've reached the entrance to the Palace of the Sun, fly three chambers back to the right. You'll see a statue of a man, an eel, and two horses. There's an upright pillar in the background on the left, align Aurora with it and fly straight up into the ceiling.

Where to get the Flying Pig Quest

Capilli Village

In Capilli Village, find a girl sitting outside town on the right blowing smoke rings. She will ask you to find her flying pig, Achilles, who has made off to the Windwheels.

Where is Achilles?

The Windwheels

You'll find the Windwheels are now positively crawling with flying pigs. Of course, since this is a quest, assume the hardest to reach will be your man. You aren't far off. If you fly all the way to the left part of the stage (to where the other smoking lady and the Windwheels sign stand) fly right from there. You can also reach this area quickly (i.e. without flying through the entire Windwheels zone) by fast traveling to Bolmus Populi and flying to the right out of town.

However you got there, fly right over two ridges, (each sporting treasure chests on top) and on to the first ridge you see with a windmill and door with lighted entry posts. Inside you'll find a spiked half wheel that allows entry across, but turn your attention downwards and you'll find an L shaped tunnel guarded by 3 moving spikes.

Down this path and on the right flies our pig.

How to identify Achilles

Use Igniculus

To confirm this is the pig you are looking for, fly Igniculus over him and light up using LT, then talk to him with Aurora using X. You'll capture him and get notified to return to Capilli.

Where to Redeem the Flying Pig Quest

Capilli Village

Speak to the girl again to redeem your quest.
