Shenmue 3 is the direct sequel to 2001's Shenmue 2. Released on the PC through the Epic Games Store and PlayStation 4 in both digital and physical formats on November 19, 2019, Shenmue 3 continues the story of Ryo Hazuki as he searches for his father's killer, Lan Di. The long-awaited RPG is developed by Ys Net from the mind of Yu Suzuki. It is published by Deep Silver. There are currently no plans to bring the game to Xbox One, though it will release on Steam in 2020.
Shenmue 3 takes place in China, and its story predominantly revolves around Hazuki and Shenhua Ling searching for Shenhua's father and the origins of the Phoenix Mirror and the accompanying Dragon Mirror. Gameplay is very similar to that of which the series is known for, featuring long dojo training segments, detective work, and forklift driving.
Shenmue 3's combat fighting system is an improvement over the previous two games in the franchise, Shenmue and Shenmue 2, where players actively level up Ryo's Kung Fu skills. The game's skill books feature a number of moves old and new, with some featuring animal styles. As expected, there are a number of mini-games available as well, including fishing, turtle racing, Lucky Hit, and more. While there are no old SEGA arcade games featured in Shenmue 3, capsule toys also make a return.
Shenmue 3 received funding through Kickstarter and Slacker Backer. According to the game's trophies, Shenmue is set to received three DLC packs, including one story expansion.
