GWENT: The Witcher Card Game | Midwinter

\n

GWENT, the digital trading card game based on the Witcher series, is also receiving a large holiday update. Much like the previous Fortnite update, it is more that the GWENT update also happens to be a holiday update than the fact that it is specifically a holiday update.

\n

While it is technically based on the in-universe holiday of Midwinter, the over 100 new cards as well as a plethora of smaller tweaks for the user experience and a host of balancing changes for various cards shows its hand; this is a major update.

\n

Here's a list of some of the many changes:

\n
    \n
  • Over 100 new cards, many with new, never before seen abilities
  • \n
  • A daily quest system, because what persistent experience would be complete without one of these?
  • \n
  • A new deck builder/ card replacement screen
  • \n
  • Better visuals and card animations
  • \n
  • Increased milling values for a lot of cards (specifics found here) for the 3 days following the release of the patch, which means it should run from December 19 to December 21.
  • \n
  • And many more small additions.
  • \n
\n

---

\n

That's all (for now), folks! There's plenty of other games in the woodworks that we're keeping an eye on whose devs have not announced clear plans, so be sure to check back often to see if any of your favorite titles are having holiday celebrations worth returning for.

World of Warcraft- Feast of Winter Veil

\n

Yes, dear folks. It's time to talk about the infamous MMORPG World of Warcraft and their Winter Veil characters that are legally distinct from traditional Christmas characters by being combinations of said characters, like Greatfather Winter, who is definitely not Grandfather Time and Santa combined. Or the Abominable Greench, who is definitely not a combination of Bigfoot and Dr.Seuss' Cat from How the Cat Stole Christmas!

\n
Quests
\n

For this holiday season, WoW has a handful of various quests to help keep you busy in addition to the other stuff you might have going on in-game.

\n

Winter Veil Bosses

\n

Throughout Azeroth, there will be bosses that are also in the holiday spirit. Beating these bosses with their special hats will give you access to their hats forever. That's right folks, you can have these chintzy holiday hats forever!

\n

Greatfather Winter Needs Cookies and Milk

\n

Greatfather Winter has been very busy and due to the amount of busy he has been, he needs a lot of milk and cookies. And he's recruiting you-- from Ironforge or Orgrimmar-- to go and get them for him.

\n

Smookywood's Pastures and the Case of the Missing Shipment

\n

A shipment has gone missing, suspected of being stolen. All we have to go on currently are rumors of Abominable Greench sightings.

\n

Metzen Kidnapped

\n

Metzen to reindeer has been kidnapped. The jinglepocket goblins in Ironforge and Orgrimmar have been contacted by the kidnappers, so seeking them out first should be your #1 priority.

\n

Entertainment

\n

There are also several special holiday treats added for your entertainment:

\n
    \n
  • The Smokywood Pastures goblins have created Wintervolt machines that can change your character's colors for up to 30 minutes. What color you'll receive is anyone's guess. It's not a glitch, it's a feature.
  • \n
  • Innkeepers have surely all gotten in the holiday spirit. Maybe kissing under the mistletoe will cause something special to happen...
  • \n
  • Where you find Santa Greatfather Winter you too are also sure to find his legendary snowmen compatriots.
  • \n
  • Early on December 25th, coincidentally the same day as Christmas in our world, the Smokywood Pasture goblins will be busy rewarding all the adventurer's with presents underneath trees throughout the land. But you best hurry, no one's names are written on them. First come, first serve.
  • \n
\n
And More!
\n

In addition to all of the above quests and various interesting rewards. There will be pets, toys, consumables, recipes, and achievements. For a full list of everything you can expect, check here

Paladins

\n

Unlike many of the games on this list, Paladins' holiday content is relatively meager. But it's the holiday season and developers seem to feel obligated to make holiday content for their persistent world games. So let's see what we've got.

\n
Evie's Merry Mayhem Sale
\n

First, each day from December 19 to December 26 will have a different chest on sale. Sadly, the devs are keeping the "chest of the day" a secret until the day it's actually available and the page where its supposed to be updated hasn't been done in a timely manner. With that being said, I'd suggest just checking out the in-game store.

\n
Paladin Holiday Calendar
\n

Paladins is also having a so-called "Holiday Calendar". Each day on their official Twitter account they will post a new link to a new trivia question. Answering the trivia question properly will enter you into a raffle to be one of a handful of people that can earn that particular day's reward.

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja Blazing

\n

You might be saying to yourself,"Wait, I didn't know they celebrated Christmas in leaf village." Well, quit asking questions, because there are cute child versions of Sasuke and Itachi and you don't want them to get taken awake just because of your needless questions, do you?

\n
Login Bonuses
\n

Over the course of the event, which ends on December 30th, there will be login bonuses of ninja pearls, ramen, and scrolls.

\n
Summoning Banner
\n

The aforementioned child Sasuke and Itachi dressed in Christmas costumes will be available in their own summoning event until December 25.

\n
Impact Mission
\n

There will also be a new Impact mission called "Impact! The Moon Goddess” featuring Kaguya Otsutsuki. Based on the epic battle from the anime, this event will run until January 11. After clearing all of the associated stages, you will be able to get “Kaguya Otsutsuki/ Founding Goddess★5”.

\n

The “Blazing Festival Haru&Rai” will also be running until December 29 and will feature “Sakura Haruno/Sheer Diligence” and “Kakashi Hatake/Entrusted with Hope” both of whom are potentially useful units in the aforementioned Impact Mission.

\n
Training Grounds: NEW PvP Mode
\n

A new PvP mode, called Training Grounds, will be added to the game, which will allow you to play against your friends.

\n
50 Free Ninja Pearls
\n

Lastly, if you want some free ninja pearls, then you can like the associated Facebook post and rake in all of the pearls once, or if, it hits 20k.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp- Holiday Event

\n

Animal Crossing is a series that is all about lowkey interactions. You live your life, make friends, build up a house. It's somewhat mundane by the bombastic, power fantasy standards that most games adhere to. And it's for this reason that Animal Crossing's somewhat simple holiday events are befitting.

\n
Holiday Furniture
\n

First, there will be holiday furniture that you can craft for your humble abode. This furniture can only be made during the event, which runs until December 26th, and requires the use of candy canes. Candy canes can be obtained by fulfilling the requests of your Animal Campers, or by playing shovelstrike. Don't worry about the end date, however, as long as you start crafting your furniture prior to the 26, then you will be fine.

\n

You can craft:

\n
    \n
  • Festive bow tree
  • \n
  • Three ball snowman
  • \n
  • Jingle fence
  • \n
  • And more!
  • \n
\n
Santa Wardrobe
\n

You can also unlock different pieces of a Santa outfit wardrobe by completing timed goals. The first piece, a Santa hat, will be unlocked merely by logging into the game during the event. The other pieces you must unlock:

\n
    \n
  • Santa Coat
  • \n
  • Santa Skirt
  • \n
  • Santa Pants
  • \n
  • Santa Boots
  • \n

Fire Emblem Heroes - Winter's Envoy

\n

To celebrate the holiday season, Fire Emblem Heroes is bringing a new, holiday-themed banner that features a quartet of characters from Fire Emblem Awakening: Lissa, Chrom, Male Robin, and Tharja. All of whom are armored characters in Holiday theme garb.

\n

The banner brings along with it the usual daily orb login bonus that lasts for 10 days until the banner ends on January 1st. There is also a trio of paralogue missions that are available on all 3 difficulties with each rewarding an orb. Lastly, there will be special missions available for each of the lunatic versions of the paralogue missions, with each rewarding an orb. All in all, via missions and login bonuses there are a total of 25 orbs up for grabs.

Destiny 2's- The Dawning

\n

Running from December 19th to January 9th, Destiny 2's event starts and ends later than many of its peers. In this yearly winter-themed holiday festival that heralds in the new year, there will be a number of different in-game items you can obtain to help put you in the holiday spirit.

\n
Snowballs of War
\n

In the Tower and the Farm, there will be snowballs scattered around which you can tag your friends with. In Strikes, these same snowballs can be used to stun enemies and deal damage.

\n
It's Mayhem in The Crucible
\n

The popular Crucible mode, first introduced in Destiny 1's The Taken King expansion, is seeing a return. This mode has abilities recharging much faster and makes kills and other actions worth more points. It's unclear whether or not Mayhem will be sticking around after the holiday event is over.

\n
Holiday Shopping
\n

Each of the 3 weeks of the event, Tess will have new Dawning themed items. Over the course of the event, all of the exotic Dawning themed items-- ships, ghost, sparrow, emote-- and every Dawning-themed legendary armor piece will be available at her store.

\n
Other Goodies As Well
\n

There will be milestones you can accomplish during the Dawning for both strikes and the Crucible's Mayhem mode.

\n

There will also be new consumables that give boosts to everyone else you are playing with.

\n

You can also pick up a Dawning gift schematic from the Bazaar. Crafting and gifting said schematic can give you a number of potential gifts in return. You can repeat this daily.

Elder Scrolls Online's New Life Festival

As of December 14th, Elder Scrolls Online will be celebrating its in-universe holiday: the New Life Festival. Much like our world's New Year's festivals, the New Life Festival celebrates the end of one year and the beginning of another. This event will run until January 2.

Rocket League Frosty Fest CHristmas and Holiday Event

\n

Rocket League's Frosty Fest will start December 11 and run through January 2. This event will work similarly to the Halloween event in that it will have its own currency -- and this time, it will be Snowflakes.

\n

Snowflakes will be earned by playing matches and can be used to buy event items, decryptors, and the new Frosty Fest event crate (as of this writing, no details were offered on specific rewards).

\n

Note: the stand-alone items you can buy are not the same items that will be available in the crate. The Frosty Fest event crate will be available as an occasional drop after matches, purchasable using snowflakes, or available using real-world money.

Call of Duty: WWII -- Winter Siege Holiday Event

\n

While previous Holiday events took place in Infinite Warfare, the new title has been released and as such, all the Winter related content will be taking place in Call of Duty: World War II. This event will run from December 8 to January 2.

\n

The Winter Siege Holiday event will feature:

\n
    \n
  • Double XP Playlists
  • \n
  • A new map: Winter Carentan (free for the duration of the event)
  • \n
  • A new game mode: Gun Game
  • \n
  • One free Winter Supply Drop each week that contains winter gear.
  • \n
\n

There will also be five free new weapons that you can unlock by completing special orders (presumably missions or goals) during the siege. Each weapon has its own variants and collection rewards. The trailer details three guns: the Gewher 43, the Sten, and the GPMG. It also seems to imply that there will be 2 new melee weapons: a pickaxe and a knife that has brass knuckles on the handle.

Splatoon 2 Christmas and Holiday Updates

\n

For the holidays, Splatoon 2 is having another Splatfest, which pits two ideas against one another and forces you to vote for them by playing for them.

\n

In one corner, we have ugly holiday sweaters weighing in at way too many because they've become an ironic trend that's intriguing yet only mildly entertaining for like one day a year -- so it's really not worth it.

\n

In the other corner, we have ugly holiday socks. The underdog that most people don't even remember exist until that one cousin who is way too comfortable at your house takes off his shoes and takes the phrase, "Make yourself at home" a little too seriously.

\n

In addition to the Splatfest, there was a recent update at the end of November that added new maps, gear, and quality of life features like swapping gear between matches. Later in December there will also be a new game mode added, which has not yet been detailed.

Interestingly, in Japan, this competition is winter outerwear vs winter innerwear. And in Europe, it is films vs books. While it makes sense that ugly holiday sweaters and socks are Amero-centric, at least Japan is still centered around the winter season. But films vs books?

SMITE Christmas and Holiday Chest

\n

From what we can tell, SMITE doesn't seem to be throwing any large event this year. However, they do have the Holiday Chest returning.

\n

Perhaps what makes SMITE's Holiday Chest stand out amongst other similar chests offered for other similar titles is that the devs are donating $1 to the Child's Play charity for every chest purchased.

\n

The Holiday chest costs 400 gems (roughly $8) and has 15 different items available. 12 skins -- 10 returning and 2 new -- along with a snowman ward, a winter loading frame, and a snowman avatar. The two new skins are Ice Mage Agni and Snow Day Scylla, pictured above.

Overwatch Christmas and Holiday Event: Return to Winter Wonderland

\n

Overwatch, Blizzard's preeminent character-based shooter, celebrates most holidays and this year is no different with the Return to Winter Wonderland celebration.

\n
Skins
\n

Hanzo, Junkrat, and Roadhog are confirmed to be receiving skins, but there will also be other legendary skins. However, at this time, the developer is playing coy and wants to "leave surprises for you when you log into the game".

Seasonal Maps

New Novelty Game Mode: Mei's Yeti Hunt
\n

Asymmetrical "boss" fight. One team has five Mei's and the other team has one Winston starring as the Yeti. Takes place in Nepal Village.

\n

At the start of this map, the Mei's are hunting down Winston. Winston, however, is searching for powerups, which put him into a primal rage mode once he has obtained enough of them. If Winston manages to get into primal rage mode, then the hunted becomes the hunter and the five Mei's are then tasked with escaping the map.

It's that time of year, ya' know, the time of year where everyone keeps starting their holiday articles with "It's that time of year". Yeah, that time. It's during this time that Christmas washes over everything and paints it a green and red veneer. Half the radio stations are playing Christmas music. Half the TV channels are showing Christmas movies. It's insurmountable size only continues to grow, not to be outdone by ol' Saint Nick's waistline.

\n

And now, the video game industry has succumbed, too. Not just to the Black Friday gift giving craze, but also to the arbitrarily dress-up-your-favorite-characters-in-Christmas-clothes craze. It's wonderful, it's terrible, it's all encompassing. But most of all, it's profitable overwhelming, just like everything else about the season. That's why we're here with a compendium of all the holiday-oriented video game events going on this season. Let's jump into the list.

The 5 Grinchiest Characters in Video Games https://www.gameskinny.com/pmc0j/the-5-grinchiest-characters-in-video-games https://www.gameskinny.com/pmc0j/the-5-grinchiest-characters-in-video-games Mon, 19 Dec 2016 03:00:01 -0500 Pablo Seara

Christmas is just around the corner! We think it is the perfect moment to write about happiness and joy... But also about The Grinch, of course. He is one of the most iconic characters related to Christmas, a grumpy, green and selfish creature that wants to steal this special Holiday.

There are plenty of villains in video gaming that share many similarities with the Grinch, even physical ones. In this article, we want to remember the five grinchiest characters in video games.

We are excluding The Grinch from this list (he has his own video game), because it would be, you know, kind of cheating.

Wario

Wario is the real anti-Mario, not Bowser. He is everything Mario is not: selfish, evil, narcissistic, and even fatter. His main motivation is getting rich, usually by stealing money from anyone. That is pretty grinchy to me, since he does not care about others and would rather rob anyone than remain poor.

Some would say he is more an antihero than a villain, especially since he has his own line of games, and they are probably right. The Grinch eventually came around and learned to love Christmas, which makes him an antihero as well. However, I do not think Wario will ever stop thinking about money...

Dahlia Gillespie

This woman is the worst and she is really ugly. She is so bad that she does not even care about her daughter, Alessa. She used her to give birth to her Dark God, with horrible results. After a failed ritual resulting in a big fire, Alessa burns and is completely disfigured. She should have died, but her mother keeps her alive with black magic. Disgusting.

Her actions trigger the events in the first Silent Hill, a key figure in the nightmarish town. She puts everyone in danger, and uses them for her own selfish purposes. She is mad, and even a little bit green, perfect for a grinchy person like her.

Professor Hojo

This guy is just despicable. Just like Dahlia, he is the real villain of his game, Final Fantasy VII. He is behind SOLDIER and the Jenova Project, which makes him the creator of Sephiroth, his finest experiment.

Hojo is the typical mad scientist, who does not care about the well-being of anyone, because he sees them as possible subjects for his tests. He performs experiments on himself, and put the city of Midgar and the whole planet in risk, but that does not matter to him at all. He even finds enjoyment in the suffering of others. You cannot get grinchier than that.

Gruntilda

The first and only green character on this list, Gruntilda is the antagonist of Banjo-Kazooie. She is clearly inspired by The Wicked Witch of the West. She is so selfish that, when she discovers that Banjo's sister is the prettiest girl in the land, she kidnaps her and tries to steal her beauty.

She goes even further in the second game, when she tries to steal everyone's vital energy to restore her body. She would rather kill everyone than remain ugly. Just as all the characters in this list, she does not care at all about anyone other than herself.

GLaDOS

What else can I say about GLaDOS (just her quotes tell you everything) that has not been said before? She is one of the greatest villains in video games, and she would make a great Grinch with her sarcastic and powerful humor. The gift is a lie!

She uses Chell in both Portal games as test subject and killed almost everyone in Aperture Science. She becomes corrupted by power and, as usual in this article, does not care about anyone. In the second game, she starts to change after she loses control of the facilities and becomes kind of good, which redeems her a little bit -- but was it all a ploy to get back in control?

----

This is our list for the grinchiest, grumpiest and most cold-hearted characters in video games. As always, there are many more in the history of gaming that could fit in this description.

What do you think about these characters? Who do you think could make a great Grinch? Let me know in the comment section below!

11 Time-Sucking Games to Get You Through the Holidays https://www.gameskinny.com/bi0mf/11-time-sucking-games-to-get-you-through-the-holidays https://www.gameskinny.com/bi0mf/11-time-sucking-games-to-get-you-through-the-holidays Fri, 16 Dec 2016 09:01:25 -0500 AwesumPawsum

Playing video games during the holiday break is a sacred thing. For over 25 years I've always used this time between Thanksgiving and New Year's to dump a ton of time into my favorite games.

It's the perfect time to do it, because most of us have fewer responsibilities during this time. Work/school is winding down, and even though we spend more time with family... you can only do so that much without taking a break.

That's why I put together a list of some great games to dive into over the next few weeks. Each of these titles can eat up dozens of hours alone -- if not hundreds. So pick your favorite genre, grab some Mountain Dew and Doritos, and dive in.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

This is my favorite game of all time. I've had at least a dozen different characters and dumped over 400 hours into it. That said, as I replay this game right now, I'm finding things I'd never done before! Side quests, locations, characters, etc. There's just so much here.

Even if you don't consider all of the quests and locations to explore, there are a ton of ways to play. Want to dual-wield axes and wear nothing but your underwear as a lizard man? No problem.

Interested in just becoming the most expert craftswoman in Skyrim and not do a lick of combat? You can do that too.

The options are unlimited -- just like the replay value.

Dying Light

Zombie games are "in". People love fighting the undead -- there's just something immensely satisfying with slaying things that want to eat your brains.

But they aren't all created the same. Dying Light is head and shoulders above most zombie games for a few reasons:

  • Awesome side quests
  • Parkour
  • Weapons crafting
  • Bandits (Just like The Walking Dead, zombies aren't the only scary things out there in the post-apocalyptic world.)

Even though the combat is tough at first, you get used to it. And similar to other RPGs, you become stronger as you progress, making destroying the undead much easier (and more enjoyable) later in the game.

And it's a long game. Dumping at least 20 or 30 hours in the game is very common, and some people report playing over 80 hours before "completing" it.

Stardew Valley

At the opposite end of the spectrum of creepiness and destruction is Stardew Valley. Even though there are monsters to slay and caves to explore, the core of this game is much more peaceful.

The general idea is that you're managing a farm. But it's more complex than that, because it's like Farmville meets The Sims meets Cafe World meets Minecraft meets Zelda. You can raise animals, grow crops, mine minerals, marry hotties, build relationships with townspeople, cook food, visit a museum, collect artifacts, etc.

It's generally a much more relaxing game. But because there's so much you can do, it's a great way to unwind and kill time during the holidays.

Especially after staying up until 2 a.m. smashing zombies or dragons.

Sid Meier's Civilization V

The strategy game genre is another good one to sink some time into. You can always get better, and its fun to play as different factions to get a different perspective.

Civilization V lets you go up against some of the greatest military leaders in history. As you set out to conquer the world, you never know what to expect. Countries that are bitter enemies in real life may team up against you. Or you may think that you just discovered/developed something incredible, only to have half the world declare war against you because of it.

Even though I personally have always been more of a fantasy/sci-fi strategy gamer, this one is a clear winner to eat up some hours before school or work starts back up.

No Man's Sky

This one is a mixed bag. Even though it didn't quite live up to its expectations, it's still not a bad choice -- especially if you've always wanted to become a space explorer more focused on just seeing different things than fulfilling fetch quests in an RPG or conquering the world.

No Man's Sky offers a lot to see, and you can constantly upgrade your ship to make it the most badass thing your side of the universe. And the recent Foundations update has only added to that -- with base building and even more customization options, plus more promised in future patches.

The only bad news is that since the universe is so big, you're highly unlikely to see other players. So even if you found the coolest planet to hang out on or built an amazing ship, nobody else will see it.

Bummer.

The awkward-looking creatures almost makes up for that, though.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

As someone who didn't finish either of the prior Witcher games, I almost felt like I didn't deserve to play this one. If I couldn't swing the first two, why did I have the right to play the third?

Of course that's silly, and I'm glad I quelled that inside voice. I dumped over 40 hours into this game before the DLC even came out.

That isn't completing all of the side quests, either. There were a lot I didn't get to finish because I was too high of a level. Plus I'm sure I didn't find all of them.

So what did I do during those 40+ hours? Well...

  • Killed werewolves, griffons and drakes
  • Avenged village craftsmen, elders and lovers
  • Turned bandits and bugs against each other while I just laughed
  • Charged into battle so toxic (but strengthened) from potions that my face looked like something from Dying Light
  • Burned harpies out of the sky with fire spells
  • Blew up teleportation portals with bombs

...oh yeah, and played a TON of Gwent. Probably the best video game mini-game ever created.

Bottom line? This game is awesome.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

If you've ever seen a movie like Starship Troopers that made you want to shoot aliens in the face...this is your game.

The cool thing about XCOM is that it combines several strategy elements into one beautiful game. In combat, you have to be smart about balancing your team with the right equipment and skills. In research and development, you have to prioritize different things based on your situation. Is learning more about that alien technology really the best way to assign your scientists right now?

But politics also come into play. Your job is to save the world, but it's a big world to save. You may have to make sacrifices and let the aliens take over a continent or two so you can adequately take care of the rest.

So it's world strategy meets tactical combat with shotguns, grenades, miniguns and snipers with freaking jet packs.

Awesome.

Grand Theft Auto V

No other game can really compare to Grand Theft Auto. Even though some series like Saints Row have similarities, it's difficult to match the epic openness of this GTA title.

Want to rob banks? Do it.
Feel like blowing up cars, planes, or boats just because? Do it.
Ever have the urge to stick it to cops just because? Do it.
Considered what it'd be like to be part of a drug ring or mafia? Do it.

This game is ridiculous -- not only in all of the different crimes you can commit, but in how many different ways to play. You can go skydiving, fly planes, drive boats, carjack anything you want...it's all there.

There is a campaign, but because this game is so open world, you'll probably keep playing long after finishing the main story.

Even though it won't exactly help you get into the "holiday spirit," it might be a good way to blow off some steam after catching flak from Uncle Frankie.

Fallout 4

Getting back into the RPG realm, Fallout IV has literally ruined peoples' lives from taking up so much of their time.

Of course you can't blame the game. Bethesda sought out to make a worthy successor to the open world of Fallout 3, and they did a great job. This game is a blank canvas just waiting for you to make your mark.

First off, you have a lot of different playstyles. Want to rock a revolver? No problem. Like the idea of zapping enemies with a laser musket? That's fun too. Or you can go the (unexpectedly) overpowered melee build using your fists, bats, sword -- whatever.

But it's more than that. There are unique companions that will join you. Tons of side quests to learn more about the world of Boston after the apocalypse. Location after location filled with loot and enemies ranging from mutated Chameleons (i.e. Deathclaws) to mutated bugs and people.

...basically, lots of mutated stuff.

Again, this isn't really a "holiday spirit" kind of game. But it's not difficult to spend hundreds of hours in this game, so it's a great choice to suck up some break time.

Starbound

When you think of a sandbox game, you may think of some of the others already mentioned. Skyrim, Dying Light, Fallout 4, etc. But Starbound is a 2D open-world game that, similar to No Man's Sky, is largely about space exploration. But you can actually do a lot more.

For example, as you interact with planet inhabitants, you can build relationships (kind of) with them. If you give them gifts, they may ask to join your ship's crew. Or as you explore, you can capture monsters that will then fight with you.

Don't want to explore the universe or fight baddies? No problem. You can just settle down and build a farm.

This game is similar to Stardew Valley in some of these respects -- but generally speaking, it has a more pointed focus on the exploration side of things.

Rocket League

Okay -- this one is a bit different. The rest of the games on this list have been primarily single player games that were either open world or just offer lots of replay value.

Rocket League is different in that it's focused around a multiplayer structure. The premise of the game is playing soccer with cars! Even though this sounds a bit silly and simple, it's amazingly fun.

The action in this game is just ridiculous. If you boost into the rear of an enemy, you blow them up. You can jump and flip in any direction to "kick" the ball. Driving up the side walls is also a big part of the game. All in all, it makes for some pretty hilarious plays that make this game really addictive.

The best part is that this game is very family-friendly. So whether you're hanging out with Grandpa or your 8 year old nephew, Rocket League is a great option.

Conclusion

Obviously these aren't the only long video games you can play during your holiday break. From other multiplayer games like League of Legends to long-ish RPGs like The Technomancer, the list is endless.

Top 5 Most Bizarre Christmas Themed Levels in Video Games https://www.gameskinny.com/mwtzy/top-5-most-bizarre-christmas-themed-levels-in-video-games https://www.gameskinny.com/mwtzy/top-5-most-bizarre-christmas-themed-levels-in-video-games Tue, 13 Dec 2016 06:56:00 -0500 Unclepulky

Christmas!!

No matter what you believe in or what your background is, Christmas is a time when people can set aside their differences and just be kind to each other. A time where families can come together -- and in certain cases, play video games.

Speaking of video games, our favorite form of immersive entertainment occasionally features Christmas-themed levels and environments. And while some display the beauty of the holiday and Winter as a whole, others are just weird. So of course, we want to look at the weirdest of the weird.

Here are the top five most bizarre Christmas-themed levels we've ever seen in video games.

5. Any Level Where You Play as Santa Claus

Happy Wheels

I'm sort of starting off by cheating, but I find this just too sad and hilarious to exclude.

In the flash game Happy Wheels, a rag doll physics game, you can play as an assortment of characters through a variety of levels. These levels are of varying quality, seeing as they're player made. One of these characters is Saint Nick himself.

And frankly, it's just surreal to see Santa driving a sleigh pulled by suffering elves, and watching them all tumble around and go through an immense amount of pain.

Happy Wheels: putting a whole new spin on Santa using slave labor.

4. Christmas Town

Kingdom Hearts 2

Given that it's straight from the superb film The Nightmare Before Christmas, the contents of this world in Kingdom Hearts 2 are pretty strange.

As Sora in Halloween Town, you get to interact with all of your favorite characters from the movie -- plus Lock, Shock, and Barrel.

On the bright side, you at least get to hit these twerps with a giant key.

During your stay here, you'll be surrounded by basic aesthetic elements of Christmas everywhere you go. Snow, bright, colorful lights, candy canes, etc.

However, this being Kingdom Hearts, a crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy, you'll also be fighting a variety of Heartless and Nobodies, as well as a giant monster created by Dr. Finkelstein.

Most bizarre of all? Something remotely interesting happens with Sora's character, as he question his belief in Santa Claus. While it's nothing special or too deep, it's one of the few times in the whole series we've seen Sora deal with an internal conflict.

3. Die Hard and Die Hard 2

Die Hard Trilogy

There are two kinds of people.

People who think Die Hard is a Christmas movie. And people who are wrong.

Die Hard Trilogy is an interesting title, as it consists of three different games, each based on one of the three first Die Hard movies, and each with a different gameplay style. While Die Hard 3 abandoned the tradition, the first two movies -- and subsequently, the first two games -- are set around Christmas.

In the third-person shooter game based off the first movie, you go around shooting terrorists and rescuing hostages. In the on-rails shooter game based off the second movie, Die Harder, you get to shoot even more terrorists, but this time with the option of doing so with a light gun that plugged right into your system.

Nothing shouts "Christmas" more than shooting virtual terrorists with a piece of plastic.

2. Twisted Christmas

Killing Floor 2

Killing Floor 2 is a mediocre FPS with rather fun gameplay, but little to no story to speak of. For the most part, it's just you and your friends shooting monsters.

One of the notable things about the game, though, are the Twisted Christmas events.

During these events, there are new playable characters, Christmas themed tunes are added to the soundtrack, and all of the gruesome specimens get even more horrifying Christmas-themed skins.

While the skins don't change the way the enemies function, their designs are just so bizarre and imaginative that I can't help but love them.

1. Nuclear Winter

Duke Nukem 3D

Topping off the list, we have the Nuclear Winter expansion pack of Duke Nukem 3D.

While the previous entries have all featured elements which made them weird, the plot of this game is about as over-the-top as you can get for a Christmas story.

In this game, Santa Claus is captured and brainwashed by the alien maggots from the original Duke Nukem 3D. This time though, they are supported by a new enemy force known as the Feminist Elven Militia. So Duke has to travel to the North Pole is order to stop the brainwashed Santa and the two villainous factions from wreaking havoc on the world.

This is simultaneously the stupidest and the greatest plot to any story I've ever heard.God bless you Duke Nukem, you glorious product of the 90's.

And God bless us, every one.

I think I've just come up with a new idea:

A Christmas Carol: Starring Duke Nukem

Hitman is Getting a Holiday Update https://www.gameskinny.com/i5x6r/hitman-is-getting-a-holiday-update https://www.gameskinny.com/i5x6r/hitman-is-getting-a-holiday-update Fri, 09 Dec 2016 00:17:13 -0500 Tinh Nguyen (Tinhn778)

IO Interactive released a free Hitman holiday update trailer this week called “Holiday Hoarders”. The update will roll out new challenges every week in the month of December, and is very much in the spirit of giving, as IO Interactive is releasing this update to support The World Cancer Research Fund.

"The Holidays are for giving and Hitman has given us so many funny and enjoyable moments, so lets’ try to give back." Is what is feels like IO are saying. With The World Cancer Research Fund being the developers’ charity of choice, if anyone would like to donate you can do so on the website.

The “Holiday Hoarders” update is held in Paris at a Christmas themed fashion show. During the mission, presents will be scattered around the map, which leaves the opportunity for greedy thieves. Securing the presents before the thieves find them first will give you a random weapon that will assist you in your mission.

December is the month of Hitman

Week 1: This update released on Thursday (December 8th). As the challenge states, “Master Sniper” Challenge pack will give the players five new sniper-related challenges, completing them all will entitle you to a “Jaeger 7 Covert” Sniper Rifle.

Week 2: This update will implement the “Holiday Hoarder” mission, with an elusive target in Sapienza. The update is slated to release on December 12 - 18.

Week 3: The third update is light on content and will release on December 19 - 25. The only thing that they’re adding is a new escalation contract in Sapienza. Escalations are missions that require a specific assassination, then builds up when completing the mission.

Week 4: From December 26 - 31 another elusive target will be available, this time in Bangkok.

Hitman was the biggest surprise in 2016 for many, with The Full Experience having all the content being a reason for this. Even though Hitman Season 1 has ended, updates and elusive targets are still coming out to the game. The continued support of Hitman keeps people playing, and while there is no release date for Season 2 Hitman fans are eagerly awaiting it.

Question: What does Pokemon Go and Christmas have in common?

\n

Well, for your starters for both you end up wandering around until you can capture the one thing that you've been searching for. And if you really look at it, Pokemon and gifts are pretty much the same as you never know what you're going to get.

\n

This year you can change that as you can finally be in charge of your own destiny and Christmas decorations.

If you love Pokemon and Christmas, you're going to be blown away with the DIY's I have in store for you that blend both to create some amazing creations.

Santa Rockstar
\n

A Guitar Hero clone Christmas game? The trailer doesn't lie: that's exactly what this is.

\n

Santa Rockstar is fairly straightforward and definitely has its place on this list as a fun Christmas-theme game if you're up for some rock Christmas song covers.

\n

Just about every Christmas song you'd want to hear a rock cover of can be found in Santa Rockstar, and you can customize your guitar and pick for your playstyle.

\n

The only downsides here are that the game is very graphically intensive and it is much too hard for younger children. Nonetheless, it's a great addition to any mobile Christmas game collection. You can grab this beauty up on Google Play.

Ski Safari 2 is great any time of year, but especially in December. Skiing is best in winter, after all! Not only that, but the game just got a big holiday update that added new challenges and some delicious Christmas-theme equipment like the Candy Cane Skis and the Gingerbread Board.

Tappy Run Xmas is probably my favorite on this list, despite basically just being a Christmas-theme version of Run Tappy Run. This one's appropriate for all ages and can be played by just about anyone. It does have a few ads, but they do not detract from the winter theme nor the gameplay. You can get your cute Christmas run on by downloading it on Google Play.

The Talos Principle snuck in the back door of 2014 as a PC exclusive (which can be found on Steam) but was re-released in a Deluxe Edition exclusively for PlayStation 4 that also included the game's DLC, Road to Gehenna. The Talos Principle is a brain-busting first-person puzzle game with a unique narrative that ponders the notion of existence. The Deluxe Edition is the best value you can get for the game and a real find for that PlayStation gamer than seemingly has every game.

Super Mario Maker appeals two types of gamers, those looking to create, and those looking for the most bang for their buck. Long time Nintendo fans finally have a platform to lay down all of the creations they have had in their head for the last 20 years and the with the shear amount of community driven content there is, the game will keep you busy for a long time to come.

Super Mario Maker is another nominee for the Game of the Year award, and is undoubtedly the best game to come out on Wii U this year.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is the last entry in the StarCraft II trilogy and ends the overarching StarCraft narrative that began with the original game back in 1998. Ori and the Blind Forest is meatier than it appears on the surface. By now, everyone knows about the Konami/Hideo Kojima drama but what's actually important is the game the two sides came together to make a reality. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the definition of open world stealth and has pushed its genre further than any game released this year. Sure the story may not make a lick of sense most of the time, but if you can find a way to get on its wavelength, you're in for a treat.

\n

\n

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is currently one of the favorites to win Game of the Year and is a culmination of quality game design and cinematic prowess that has grown and evolved over time as a series that has always been at the forefront of both.

Fallout 4 is a post-apocalyptic wanderer's dream world. It's filled with danger to face, dilapidated dungeons to dive into, loads of customization options, and amazing community driven mod content. Divinity: Original Sin started as a Kickstarted PC exclusive that released back in 2014. This year, it made its way to consoles in the form of Divinity: Original Sin: Enhanced Edition that seamlessly translated the keyboard and mouse controls to work with game pads. PC players were automatically upgraded to the Enhanced Edition via a free upgrade.

Divinity: Original Sin is role-playing personified, targeting fans of old school RPG's. Bloodborne initially released as a PS4 exclusive back in March of this year to widespread critical acclaim. Brand loyalty. It's a big deal and a huge crutch for businesses all over the world. In gaming, we associate series' with past accomplishments which plays on our nostalgia each time a new iteration of our favorite game comes out.  Unfortunately, reality is not the same as nostalgia and just because one company makes one great game in a given series doesn't mean every game they make after that will retain that same level of quality.

\n

The point of this guide is to point you in the direction of top notch games that anybody for an eye for quality can appreciate.

Sega Dreamcast/Sonic Adventure/NFL 2K

\n

I remember that I wanted the Sega Dreamcast when it came out because of how great NFL 2K looked. I felt the same way about Sonic Adventure. NFL 2K is still one of my favorite sports game. I also feel that Sonic Adventure is one of the best, if not the best Sonic game in a long time.

\n

My brother loved the fact that the Dreamcast had play-calling for NFL 2K on the memory card in the Dreamcast controller so I wouldn't be able to see what plays he was calling. I loved the graphics and dialogue for Sonic Adventure, having characters speak their lines, unlike other games at the time. Sonic games should follow the formula that Adventure did so well.

Nintendo 64/Super Mario 64

\n

I really wanted to get my hands on a Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 for Christmas. I wasn't like the N64 kid in that youtube video but I was excited for a kid. I remember going to our local mall and playing Super Mario 64 in Sears when they still had the demo station in the video games department! One of the best games from Nintendo, Super Mario 64 set the bar for making 3D games and was followed when the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released.

Super Nintendo/Super Mario World/Donkey Kong Country

\n

I've grown up with Nintendo games and one Christmas, I received the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, along with some great games like Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country. I got my Super Nintendo late in the lifespan of the system so that's why I was playing Donkey Kong Country after Super Mario World. Who wouldn't love to hook up the SNES to the television and meet some new friends like the various Yoshi, Diddy Kong, and Funky Kong. The Super Nintendo was a big step forward compared to the NES and helped Nintendo gain an even bigger following!

Pokemon Red and Blue

\n

I was in 5th grade when the Pokemon craze started where everyone would bring in their Game Boys and play at lunch time. They would also bring their Pokemon cards to school for lunchtime as well. My friend got me started by showing me the promo video that Nintendo sent out and I have him to thank for me liking Pokemon.

\n

For all the money that goes into Pokemon, should I thank him or hate him? Anyway, I remember knowing I was going to get Pokemon Red and Blue for Christmas but I couldn't believe my parents were making me wait until Christmas to start my journey in Kanto. Pokemon Blue started my love for the franchise and water-starter, Squirtle (still my favorite Pokemon).

Super Mario World-Super Nintendo Entertainment System

\n

We've reached the end of the line and I know what your thinking. You're thinking this list is pretty Mario heavy and in a way, you're right. Mario games are long and you need some time to play them. Super Mario World was the first Mario game for the Super Nintendo and it built off of Super Mario Brothers 3. It brought Mario platforming into the 16 bit generation.

\n

It also brought Yoshi into the Mario Universe and now, it feels like you can't think of the Mario games without him. Dinosaur Land had been taken over by the Koopas and Bowser, with help from the Koopaling, has taken the Princess hostage while her and the Mario Bros were on vacation. Do you have what it takes to join forces with the Mario Brothers, rescue the Princess, and save Dinosaur Land?

Super Mario Brothers 3-Nintendo Entertainment System

\n

Coming off of the "not-so-much-like-Mario" Super Mario Brothers 2, Nintendo came back with a more traditional Super Mario Brothers 3. Common enemies like the Goomba, Koopa Troopas, and Hammer Brothers joined some newcomers like the Sledge Brothers and Fire Brothers. This time around, Bowser brought his Koopa Kids into the fold to help kidnap the seven rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom and steal their scepters as well as the Princess.

\n

Only Mario and Luigi can help save the day with some help from Toad in various locations. Combine that with the new power-ups like the Frog Suit, Hammer Brothers Suit, and Kuribo's Shoe and the Mario Brothers have just what they need to defeat King Koopa.

Kirby's Adventure-Nintendo Entertainment System

\n

The first Kirby game on the Nintendo Entertainment System didn't disappoint. Dream Land is in trouble again and it's up to our favorite pink puff to save the day. Kirby is able to take over enemy powers but you probably knew that already. Kirby will have to use all his abilities and attacks to stop King Dedede from using the Star Rod to torment Dream Land. Kirby's Adventure has some of the best music in the series as well as some interesting boss battles.

Super Mario 64-Nintendo 64

\n

Super Mario 64 is the game that many credit for bringing gaming into the 3D era and out of 2D. Super Mario 64 was a launch title for the Nintendo 64 and got tons of people on board with 3D gaming and Nintendo. Mario was invited to the castle for cake from the Princess and when he got there, she wasn't there. Bowser had already taken her captive and built up a strong-hold in the castle. It's up to Mario to regain the 120 Power Stars and use them to gain access into the various floors in the castle to rescue the Princess. Mario rescuing the Princess, so crazy it just might work!

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars- Super Nintendo

\n

Nintendo and Square came together for one of the best Role Playing Games around. It took Nintendo's golden boy, Mario, and built an RPG out of the Mushroom Kingdom, complete with new enemies. It still had the core characters of Mario, Princess Toadstool, and Bowser. It also had some new enemies like Smithy, the "Bowser" of the game. Team up with Mallow, Geno, the Princess, and"gasp" Bowser, to help keep peace in the Mushroom Kingdom. Use special attacks in turn based fights to level up and defeat the mechanical monsters from Smithy.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time-Nintendo 64/3DS

\n

If I felt that A Link to the Past was one of my favorite games, then Ocarina of Time has to be up there too. Ocarina of Time is just A Link to the Past with better graphics. Keep Ganondorf/Ganon from getting into the Sacred Realm and using the Tri-Force to turn Hyrule into the Dark World. The music is some of the best in the franchise as well as in gaming. Use the Master Sword become the Hero of Time and take the Tri-Force, Zelda, and the land of Hyrule back from the forces of evil!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-Super Nintendo

\n

Very long(time-wise) and Zelda games go hand-in-hand and A Link to the Past is no different. I received A Link to the Past for Christmas years ago and loved every minute of it. To this day, it's still one of, if not my favorite game. It does everything right in terms of story, music, and graphics. The dungeon designs and weapons, like the hook-shot, are still Zelda mainstays. Link needs to stop Ganon from taking over Hyrule with the Tri-Force and bring the Dark World into the light. Save the seven maidens and restore order to the land of Hyrule before it's too late.

Donkey Kong Country-Super Nintendo

\n

This weekend was the 20th anniversary of Donkey Kong Country and what better way to celebrate the occasion then to take some time out of your Thanksgiving and beat it. The 3D rendered characters on 2D environments bring out the best of Rare and the Super Nintendo. Get Donkey Kong his banana horde back and defeat King K. Rool. I doubt you'll see him again so get in there and take him down.( what do you mean, he comes back twice on the SNES. Someone better check their facts)

Pokemon-3DS/DS/Game Boy

\n

The Pokemon franchise is one of my favorites. The only problem is that you need some time to play it. Stop me if you've heard this one before, the holidays is a perfect time for video games. It doesn't matter which Pokemon game you play. It could be the return to Hoenn in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. It could be the Kalos region in X and Y. It could be my personal favorite Johto region in Gold and Silver where I can raise my Totodile and Heracross like the gold old days!

Super Smash Bros-Wii U/3DS

\n

Lets start this off right with the game that everyone needs. Super Smash Brothers, both the 3DS and Wii U versions, are played best with family and friends. Both of those things gather around during the holidays so why wouldn't a massive multi-player game not be perfect for the holidays. You'll be able to show your family and friends just who is the best of the best! Settle the argument over the last piece of pie with a game of an eight player Smash Battle.

The Thanksgiving holiday will be here before you know it and that can only mean one thing, getting time off of school or work. The same could be said for the Christmas holiday break so you'll have plenty of time on your hands to do things.

\n

You could read a good book or build something. Who am I kidding, the only thing you can do is play video games. The holidays give you time to finally play that game you haven't had time for. Long games are the best when you finally get that long weekend to beat it.

Chell from Portal may not be seen as your typical hero, but I put that down to her silence. This girl doesn't need to scream from the rooftops about how heroic she is. She defeated GLaDOS not only once, but twice! To top it all off, she also mastered how to use a Portal gun to solve some of the trickiest puzzles I've ever seen. If that's not heroic, then I don't know what is!

\n

If your partner is as humble a hero as Chell, then maybe she should try these on for size!

"What the Heck is a Nabi?" A Nabi Jr. Review https://www.gameskinny.com/brc34/what-the-heck-is-a-nabi-a-nabi-jr-review https://www.gameskinny.com/brc34/what-the-heck-is-a-nabi-a-nabi-jr-review Tue, 24 Dec 2013 08:08:19 -0500 Marco.Bishop

I am sure you have seen the comericals; it seems tablets are slowly moving toward children, and why the heck not? I won't lie: my two- and three-year-olds love to play around on my Galaxy Tab. But the sad truth of this? I get tired of having PB&J smeared on it. So, around my son's third birthday, I started to search the Interwebs for the best bang for my buck.

The issue was that there are so many of them to choose from. I started to, of course, look at the big names -- InnoTab and the LeapPad. I bounced around those two for a good bit, adding up costs and comparing features. That's when I found the Nabi Jr.

I have started to see commercials on the various channels my children force me to watch because, you know, I own a 55" LED TV so that they can enjoy their shows. After three months, I'm increasingly impressed with that little Nabi Jr., and my Galaxy Tab is food and spit (and scratch, and crack, and itty-bitty, teeny-tiny fingerprint) free.

Let's start by stacking up the competition side-by-side:

InnoTab 3S:

  • Price: $99
  • CPU: 360-MHZ
  • Display: 5 inches
  • Resolution: 480 x 272
  • Tilting Camera 2mp
  • Battery Pack
  • Wifi
  • 20 Apps
  • 4GB Internal Memory
  • SD Card Support: Yes (MicroSD)

LeapPad Ultra:

  • Price: $140
  • CPU: 800-MHz
  • Display: 7 inches
  • Resolution: 1,024 x 600
  • Front and Back Camera 2mp
  • Built-In Battery
  • Wifi
  • 11 Apps
  • 8GB Internal Memory
  • SD Card Support: No

Nabi Jr 16GB (there's also an older 4GB model):

  • Price: $140
  • CPU: NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad Core @ 1.0GHz
  • Display: 5 inches
  • Resolution: 800×480
  • Tilting Camera 2mp
  • Built-In Battery
  • Wifi
  • 30+ Apps
  • 16GB Internal Memory
  • SD Card Support: Yes (MicroSD)

The biggest selling point for me was the crushing difference in specs (more for my satisfaction than theirs, I admit).  The resolution is about the same between the three. The ability to load his movies on to an SD Card and let him watch, as it and the InnoTab both use Andriod while LeapPad uses a propitery OS, is a huge plus.

How does it hold up?

This is chief among concerns that any parent or gift-giver will have: Nabi Jr. versus the wrath of a toddler. The verdict? Amazingly well! It has been knocked off, thrown, suffered the fate of a peanut butter & jelly sacrifice and a merciless 2-year-old sister. It is still ticking. The Nabi Jr. comes outfitted with cushy, an effective bumper that serve as a durable case. The large bumper protects the delicate electronic bits inside, and the ports outside, from the attacking PB&J horde.

The interface is seamless and simple enough that my wee ones take less time navigating, and more time getting to the good stuff. I was surprised at how well they handled it and how quickly my boy figured out how to take pictures. Ever wondered how your little one sees things? Judging from his stock of photos, a toddler's world is pretty interesting.

The Daddy/Mommy mode is easy to use and I like the ability to load and monitor what and how the kiddos are exploring the device.

The company is developing neat accessories for the kids' device. I like the KINABIs -- little squares that you can use to customize the back of the Nabi Jr. My son is proud of his name and football on the back of his orange and white wonder.

The one thing that annoyed me at first was the proprietary port to charge the device. Then I found out it is designed in a way to be used with future accessories, like a karaoke-capable peripheral. I would definitely recommend the Nabi brand to folks interested in buying their kids tablets. They have different models for different age groups, so be assured that my kiddos will be getting another when they outgrow this one.

All in all, if you are scrambling for a last-minute Christmas tablet or one for an upcoming special day, I recommend taking a look at Nabi. You won't be  disappointed. The Nabi Jr. will grow with your kid and provide a positive learning experience.

Miracle on Grove Street: GTA V Online Holiday DLC! https://www.gameskinny.com/q1zad/miracle-on-grove-street-gta-v-online-holiday-dlc https://www.gameskinny.com/q1zad/miracle-on-grove-street-gta-v-online-holiday-dlc Mon, 23 Dec 2013 22:27:09 -0500 Richard Whelchel

‘Tis the season for online Christmases!  Yes, it seems every online game has its own unique way of showing off some sort seasonal flare come the holidays.  And with GTA V Online, what better way could Rockstar have given us some cheer then by allowing us to shed buckets of blood across fresh powder?  You’ll be slipping and sliding down Vinewood Boulevard in no time, as this blizzard contains realistic physics that will give way for a white knuckle joyride.

I know what you’re thinking: “Snow? In Los Santos?”

Sure it doesn’t make the most logical sense, but neither does killing an NPC, taking their car, and then having a bounty placed by on your head by that same NPC 5 minutes later via text message.

The DLC comes packed with more features than just some fresh North Yankton powder – Santa hats, reindeer antlers, elf costumes, and more can now be found in stores in Los Santos.  What would look cooler than having your character decked out in St. Nick’s outfit, totting a fully modded AK-47?

Check out these great YouTube videos by TeraTechNova and MrJamesGeary – both of which showcase all the new outfits this new DLC has to offer.

Dig Rockstar’s latest DLC?  Wish they could’ve done more? Let me know in the comments section!  Also, follow me on Twitter @richardwhelchel for more news and gaming shenanigans

The Hero of Time or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Nintendo. https://www.gameskinny.com/4oggb/the-hero-of-time-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-nintendo https://www.gameskinny.com/4oggb/the-hero-of-time-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-nintendo Tue, 17 Dec 2013 14:55:20 -0500 Red Blue Yellow

In Gamestop a month ago, I casually perused the walls for unique experiences (while avoiding the stacks of last year's Madden and Call of Duty titles, abandoned like a Christmas puppy that became too much for a family to handle).

But as I've entered into adulthood with its responsibilities, I've grown a little colder. Thoughts like "Why do I even bother coming here?" are frequent as I become more and more jaded with the titles being pumped out on the regular since my childhood; recently released Intellectual Properties masquerading as new and fresh titles only to be a rehash of gameplay and stories originally provided by past greats like God of War or Grand Theft Auto.

A quick glance out the glass window of the small shop to the cold outdoors, whether it be to wish myself back to a time where I could actually be excited about a new release again or to avoid the brazen attempts of the clerk to nail me for a pre-order, reminded me that the holidays were right around the corner. I should be cheery and jolly. Is it possible that I've just simply grown out of being a gamer and evolved into something else?

Song of Time

There was a strong magic in the air, something that really only happens once in your lifetime unless you relive it through other children.

Before heading out of the store I noticed a very special box.

Wrapped up in gold and black stood the Wii U Deluxe Version with Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. Don't get me wrong, I was brought up on Ocarina of Time. I've played the thing from start to finish countless times while reliving grade school all-nighters: struggling with the infamous Water Temple, trying to get that hard-to-reach Skulltula, which one of the many damsels in distress we'd choose if we were the Hero of Time... It was a special time for my friends and I, discovering courage and puberty and wishing we could make that final blow to Ganon's face. There was a strong magic in the air, something that really only happens once in your lifetime unless you relive it through other children.

Wind Waker was released some time later when I was in high school and despite the hardcore fan's initial distaste in the cel shading art direction, I felt it was a true successor of OoT. There are many moments in this game where the characters directly reference the events of OoT and while it doesn't really have the same feel, it is a fantastic exploratory experience completely on its own. While it doesn't have the same fan clout as OoT, Wind Waker was still a classic to me.

So when present day me (Adult Link?), saw that shiny Wii U with Hyrulian etchings curling down the edges of the GamePad, my Child Link screamed out through the past. Something just awoke in me then, and within 5 minutes I had brought it off the wall, swiped my card and was walking out of the store.

Triforce of Wisdom

What had I done?

Surely this wasn't a simple impulse buy. I'm a man of research and scrutiny. With the excitement swirling around the Xbox One and the Playstation 4, I still avoided purchasing either. I'm not comfortable buying any game unless there's a sale since if I bought all the games I've been disappointed with recently at full price I'd be needing a shrink and probably a new girlfriend. I've read the reviews. As of the writing of this article, the Wii U library is a little lacking for a "next gen" console that released over a year ago.

Maybe I'm just a big Zelda fan. Maybe I love collectibles. Maybe I love scaring my roommates away by showing them my made-up language scribbles on my Ipad-esque controller. I like to think otherwise, or at least try.

Unexpected Windfall

I'd been staring at the box on my floor for a while. I began to question that magic in the store and considered sitting on the limited edition Wii U and flipping it for a profit. After all that Pikachu 3DS that released earlier this year was selling for a pretty penny.

Dayum!

I'm not sure why I opened the box but I did.

I plugged that sucker in and loaded it up. I must say, everything from the menu music to the Wii to Wii U transfer process was a delight. Nintendo has an unexplainable quality in their products that have fascinated me ever since I was a kid. And hot damn, look at that Hyrulian design!

Nintendo has fully integrated into the online world and although things like the MiiVerse and WiiTV have been largely overlooked by reviewers, I found that I enjoyed them. The MiiVerse is sort of a social network for Nintendo fans, allowing you to draw stuff on your GamePad and post it to the community. You can also link up the GamePad to your TV to control volume and power settings all with one remote, which is a great quality of life improvement for me. I also feel that while the library needs to stretch it's legs, Nintendo has an impressive lineup for 2014. You can guarantee that Smash Bros will sell consoles as it has done in the past. Until then I've thoroughly enjoyed Wind Waker HD, Rayman Legends, Super Mario 3D World and Wonderful 101 while seriously looking forward to the expansion of the Virtual Console.

I understand that Mario and Zelda and Donkey Kong games are just as formulaic as God of War or Call of Duty or their respective clones. It's all about presentation, though. The PS3 and Xbox 360 lacked the kind of presentation and feel of the Wii U: That family friendly, warm fireplace feel.
There's a certain kind of quality to be found in a Nintendo console and I do appreciate a product that does not have a reputation for Red or Yellow Rings of Death. Maybe it's my Child Link reaching out to me, hoping that I can resurrect some of those same feelings I had during my first playthrough of Ocarina of Time.

This holiday season I won't have a bitter taste in my mouth

I will instead choose a simpler path. One without chain lightning, ammo upgrades, or slaughtering alien hordes. I am a thorough believer that based on what I've seen from the NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U, Nintendo is capable of continuing of carrying on that special something throughout the ages, just as they always have. The heroes of time. At least, my time.

Another great title by Starbreeze Studios and published by EA. Syndicate is a reboot from 1993 and is now a first-person tactical shooter laced with great weapons and fun co-op play. This is another game that went under many peoples radar and deserves a shot before the current generation of consoles officially ends.

Bulletstorm is a fun FPS that has a distinct arcade feel, the kind where you get points for shooting a guy in the groin, and then finishing him off with a swift kick into a gigantic man-eating plant. This odd mash-up of a game comes from an odd pairing with Electronic Arts (EA) as the publisher, but People Can Fly and Epic Games actually made the product. If an abundance of foul language doesn't bother you, then this is just a fun shooter to have.

Valve self published and made one of the best, and unique first-person shooters (FPS) to date with Portal 2. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is probably one of the most overlooked third-person hack-n-slash/shooter of the generation. The game is very basic in its story and graphic fidelity, but one of the funniest games around. For some reason it's greatly satisfying. Relic Entertainment created this underdog and was published by THQ (who's out of business now).
